To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

If they ate it all up and they weren't sick then it was surely an ok amount for them. I have learnt my lesson on this front coming home looking forward to a nice meal to find it is all in everyone else's stomach, if you haven't told people serving up how many it is meant to be for you can't expect them to automatically know.

peridito · 01/10/2021 17:50

She’s not allowed to be pissed off she had nothing to eat?

not this pissed off no ,and not to make it all about how shocking it was for 2 grandchildren to eat so much .I really doubt it was that much .

The reference to the meal as "bolognaise mince" and the recipe (mince ,red onion ,chopped tomatoes makes me think that this isn't someone who is a generous cook . I bet a pound to a penny that the quality of the mince was similarly lacking and rendered down a great deal .She is making it all about the gluttony of the children but her real beef (see what I did there) is with her husband.

The OP is angry with her husband for not being thoughtful and saving her some .(He doesn't eat red meat and was planning to have pasta and pesto .)

She says she is annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us.

I guess it's possible that there is nothing else in the home that she could eat,but surely she could have the some of the remaining packet of pasta and some pesto ....

OP, you sound like a broken record. Every comment from you sounds EXACTLY the same. You came here and asked a question; plenty of posters have told you: it isn’t “shocking,” it isn’t “far too much” (since you didn’t bulk up the sauce up with almost any vegetables, etc). And your husband split a half of a package of pasta three ways when it was all he was eating, so they didn’t have much pasta.

With what little you put in the Bolognese, and since on average meat loses 25% if its weight while cooking, each child had the equivalent of a 187g burger, essentially. With enough pasta to qualify as a “bun.” Did you think after you cooked mince, there was still 500g? No. Why do you think most people add a LOT more than “chopped tomatoes and a red onion”? That’s why. If you say it was only one onion and one tomato, then you REALLY have your answer on it not being too much.

No. Not “shocking” at all. This has been odd to read.

I save the cuttlefish backbone and make combs out of them.

How very wasteful of you to spend time brushing your hair instead of volunteering for the less fortunate. Disgraceful.
mathanxiety · 01/10/2021 23:48

@WombatChocolate, the obesity epidemic is not driven by children eating too much homemade spag bol.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/10/2021 08:16

Yes, the only acceptable thing to do with the cuttlefish backbone is to squat on the bare earth in front of your earthenware mortar which you have fashioned yourself out of clay you dug up yourself from the garden, and fired in a bonfire in the back garden, and spend the day grinding them down with a pestle made from more of said clay and a handle which you have whittled over the dark winter evenings from fallen branches from the park, to make a nutritious powder you can sprinkle over your meals to up the calcium content.

You're showing your calcium privilege there. We see you.

Yaassssss Tell me do you chant an incantation whilst undertaking this domestic ritual. I feel I need to honour the cuttkefish give something back to appease the gluttony of modern life, we are disconnected from our cave person we know eat huuuuuuge portions off a factory produced plate. We confuse and deceive out nutritional self into thinking we can and should eat like pigs

I can’t bring myself to unfollow this - you lot keep reeling me back in !

ToffeeNotCoffee · 02/10/2021 12:39

Like a cuttlefish on a hook !

applechips · 02/10/2021 12:42

Brilliant !

clarehhh · 02/10/2021 17:22

Surely at that age you serve the portion to them? If it was for 4 should have given them a quarter.

jackstini · 02/10/2021 17:24

I use 1kg of mince plus the tomatoes, celery, courgette, carrot, onion etc. That would feed 4 of us - 2 adults, dc 15 & 12 with a bit left over

It's a bit much for 2 kids that age, should have fed you too, but they were obviously hungry!

soraya · 02/10/2021 17:28

If they ate it all then it was not too much. On the other hand maybe he didn't cook enough pasta for them so they filled up on the bolognese.

takenforgrantednana · 02/10/2021 17:29

sounds like my husbnd to be honest, he has no idea on portion control, if you had just left it in the pan and said ive made spag bol and its in the pan for the grandkids, then they would have got it all in our house too, ok i wouldnt be too upset if they have eaten the lot, think i would be more annoyed tho if it got wasted

lifecoachingandotherbollocks · 02/10/2021 17:31

Its ok to be cross at Dp but not the dcs. Just grab a toastie or something

LippyChick · 02/10/2021 17:32

Personally I’d suspect that dad divided the panful by 3…!

Bertiebiscuit · 02/10/2021 17:32

He's a bit of an idiot - tell him to make dinner for you and him or buy takeaway - you're working too hard and next time tell him at length as if he is a bit slow, that the meal was for the 4 of you. Or maybe he could cook for you all next time - don't allow his nonsense

lljkk · 02/10/2021 17:34

LoL @SummerHouse

Katherine9 · 02/10/2021 17:35

Kids don't tend to overeat things like pasta out of greed. Personally, I'd have been happy to see young kids eat decent food and made myself something else. Would you rather they were left hungry just so you could have your portion?!

Beastieboys · 02/10/2021 17:35

@Innovationstandard

I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.

12???? wtaf?? Who are you, The Borrowers!!

Love this ^^
karenjkayjay · 02/10/2021 17:36

It depends on how big this pan was, was it just mince or lots of vegetables in it as well as the mince? If they ate it then I guess it was just the right amount

Yogalola · 02/10/2021 17:40

Good your grandchildren ate it all, 8 and 9’s don’t really eat that much so was it only two portions worth? I’d tell your partner to go and get fish and chips for you both if you don’t want to cook again.
