To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

If it’s 500g I wouldn’t say it was big enough four 4, my other half would have at least half the meat at least and not so much pasta, not much left for three. Bit much for two children.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 02/10/2021 19:11

@EspressoDoubleShot

I know Grin And if anyone ever refers to these dainty little things on another thread, there's always a bunch of people saying they have never ever seen any competitive under-eaters and we have lost sight of what a normal meal and a normal weight is because 41 grams per portion of meat is cooompleeetely normal and the rest of are gluttonous pigs!

FreshFancyFrogglette · 02/10/2021 19:15

Are u sure dp didn't have a cheat day?
Does sound a lot, but I wouldn't be overly pissed off about it. Unless I had specifically told dp to save me some.

Xmasbaby11 · 02/10/2021 19:26

I don't think that's 4 portions. You'd need some sides to make it feed all of us - 2 adults and 7 and 9 year old. Just think of it as a lesson for next time!

msgreen · 02/10/2021 19:30

To 3 bags mince we add a head of celery big bag of grated carrots
3 big onions plus tomatoes tinned and puree
this feeds 12

Tigger1895 · 02/10/2021 19:36

@Minfilia

500g mince?

Not to be a competitive mumsnet undereater but bulked out with a shedload of veg, we can get 6 portions. So if that was given to two young kids then yes that’s far too much!

But she said it was chopped tomatoes and onion, so it wasn’t bulked out
Carrick27 · 02/10/2021 19:42

I’ve never heard of anyone adding so many weird ingredients to spag bol until I came upon this thread! I am a little disappointed that no frugal mum has fed 20 members of her extended family with a spag bol made from her own placenta ….yet?

12 what? wwe wrestlers? Surely it could stretch to 22 with addition of pulses, heaps of vegetables, chickpeas, lentils, sweetcorn, cuttlefish, tofu, and tinned soup, some star anise, curry powder and a stock cube

12? You could have tried harder.

made from her own placenta

You missed that thread. Grin

Carrick27 · 02/10/2021 20:02

Typical, I miss all the fun stuff Grin

Celticdawn5 · 02/10/2021 20:08

They were clearly hungry so I’d be happy that they had something sensible to eat

Celticdawn5 · 02/10/2021 20:13

It’s a bit like those old Family Circle magazine recipes…how to feed a family of 12 using 1lb mince and a potato

Sheerdetermination · 02/10/2021 20:21

They must have been hungry.

DeadButDelicious · 02/10/2021 20:35

Yeah that is a bit much and I'd be pissed that none was left for me but if it's not an everyday occurrence and they are healthy active kids then I wouldn't be too concerned. DH would be getting me a takeaway though.

Zipperdidoodaa · 02/10/2021 20:40

Well if they ate it they must have been hungry in which case it wasn't too much, you just underestimated. If it had of been bulked out with veg, lentils etc then it would have gone further. If my nieces/nephews had eaten so well I would be delighted and definitely wouldn't begrudge them having it all but then I have a well stocked freezer so would have a portion of bolognase or similar that I could have quickly defrosted

godmum56 · 02/10/2021 20:43

well but hang on, I have just re read.....the OP didn't say that she expected to have any saved for her and if she said something like there is spag bol for you and the kids then did he have any reason to save any?

The portion size should really have been a clue.
godmum56 · 02/10/2021 20:50

@PurpleDaisies

"The portion size should really have been a clue."

Not really given that they ate it all and many of the other posters think its not an unreasonable amount

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/10/2021 20:54

@youvegottenminuteslynn, yes, we are very privileged to have access to calcium. We self-flagellate night and day in a small effort to make up for it.

@EspressoDoubleShot, of course we do an incantation. What do you take us for, heathens? I've researched an authentic Neanderthal chant, actually.

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2021 20:57

If you put a shed load of food in front of plenty of kids, they’ll eat all of it. That doesn’t mean it’s not a really massive portion. It won’t have done them any harm as a one off but I don’t think most people would look at bolognese made with 500g mince and think that served two children.

I would argue it's more rare to have a kid eat the whole portion than it is to have to bargain with the kid to eat the minimum we consider a healthy portion for them though. I don't know many kids at all that would eat a portion bigger than they feel they need.
fib88 · 02/10/2021 21:07

They were obviously hungry and I’d always feed my children before myself, just be grateful your DP fed them and they went home full - geez, I think you are either very hard work or moody because you’re knackered from working long hours etc … chill and deep breath

Well I don’t do the incantation myself as my muse the Saag Aloo from the Castle Milk she chants and I am in a food deprived state of euphoria, the mistress saag aloo says I must eschew myself of all carbs and gluttony (oh and money) to be —fleeced— cleansed of toxins. My aura has a fatty rim, akin to a pot noodle. I need a lot of help. Fortunately my muse helps me

Why should she be grateful that granddad fed his own grandkids?! So sexist.

She wasn’t even home, of course he had to feed them. Confused

And she had done the hard work anyway?

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2021 21:11

Fuck, it’s a pretty low bar when you’re supposed to be grateful a granddad fed his own grandkids food cooked by someone else.
