@MazIsWin22

I think its a big scaremongering tactic. Its kinda like theres something else going on in the world that they are trying to distract us from? Anyone else have that feeling or am I just suspicious haha

You are probably right. This whole thing is self inflicted. A handful of BP stations closed yesterday because of shortage of drivers and it was running as a headline news story on every network. It absolutely was not news until it was deliberately put in the headlines.

@Zeal

The best option is to only half fill the tank. We never, ever need a full tank. Let me explain.

Whenever I go from A to B, I have noticed they are never at the same height above sea level. Therefore, logically half the journey is going to going down and the other half is going to be going up. When I am going downhill, gravity will allow the car to roll forward and I do not need the engine running to achieve that. When I need to go uphill, I can engage the engine and use that power to drive the car uphill against gravity.

It is that simple. I use the empty top part of the tank to go downhill and the bottom half, which contains the fuel of course, to go uphill. Because I never need to completely fill my tank, my fuel bills are only 50% of what they would otherwise be.

Love it! 😂😂

Annoyingly I'm due to fill up (currently on last bar) which needs doing before Monday morning.
I clearly made a critical error in riding my bike 10k yesterday and not driving that journey and filling up! Grin

A vehicle can only hold one tank full anyway so it's not that anyone is buying copious amounts more than usual, it's that the timing has shifted so people that would be anticipating buying fuel over the next few days have brought that forward and joined the queues. The queues then aggravate the behaviour because it makes it look like there's a local issue. The danger is not that there's an absolute shortage but that the individual petrol stations run low ahead of their scheduled delivery. If people stick to their normal buying pattern if they've got a decent amount left, then this should be a short blip.

The trouble is between MSM and SM loving a hint of drama it doesn't take much to make a few queues and escalate the situation.

BTW, I stocked up on my bogrolls as usual in Feb 2020 before it was so trendy Grin

It’s really not “people’s” fault though is it.

There really is a shortage of fuel because there is a shortage of HGV drivers. It’s not like the whole country woke up today and thought fuck it, we’re going to fill up all the cars!

Personally I would like to blame the root cause, not blame the poor buggers that are worried about not being able to use their car because that’s exactly what they want….

I was just about on fumes today so I did fill my tank up. It's what I normally do when my car is nearly out of diesel.

I was empty on Wednesday and filled right up, completely unaware of the impending madness.

Ok, it’s a well known combination of human selfishness and media glee in chaos

My tank was empty. So I filled up today.
So now I have a car with a full tank of petrol sting on the drive. That does not make me selfish anymore than anyone else who needed petrol and managed to get it today Confused
It is a unhealthy mix of scaremongering and idiocy.

Why are we short of fuel?

Report

I've spent the majority of my day directing traffic into our petrol forecourt and reassuring people that we are not running out of petrol but it's falling on deaf ears. It's amazing how people fall for whatever the media are telling them time and time again and don't believe the people who actually know.

For reference I'm working at Tesco and my friend is at Asda and both of us are having the usual regular deliveries. You'll be the ones who cause the closures because once it's gone we'll shut until our next scheduled delivery because at this point getting an extra delivery slot isn't an option for anyone because of this foolish behaviour.

I need to fill up, I’m waiting until Monday as I think most of the panic buyers will have a car with a full fuel tank by Monday.

Why are we short of fuel?

Shortage of HGV drivers to cart it here.

Actually that is what happened, all these people queuing didn’t suddenly need petrol today. they just thought oh shit I better full up even though I’ve got half a tank left and that usually lasts me all month but hey I’m a selfish so and so so I’ll go and queue up and add to the problem.
Yes there is a shortage of hgv drivers that’s true but we aren’t going to run out of fuel .

Absolute nightmare!! I’ve just been to fill up because im heavily pregnant with very little fuel I was worried to death that there would be nothing left with all this going on and I would end up being stranded in labour.. It’s utter bullshit! For the idiots filling up just to be pootling around there own town - selfish arseholes!

That’s where YOU are though. Our Tesco station had to close yesterday before the panic buying.

You can’t really blame people. This was all predicated as long as 5 years ago and there’s been numerous warnings since. A couple of weeks big areas started seeing empty shelves, then rumblings of inflated gas and electricity prices, energy companies going bust leaving uncertainty for millions and now fuel stations.

I’m not surprised people have been panicked.

This issue might not have resolved by Monday, hence why many are filling up their tanks now. I know my mum is attempting fill her car up as she needs it for work, and can not risk not being able to use her car.

I filled up yesterday. Like I always do on payday. Will last me 2 weeks.

Report
Stuffin · 24/09/2021 17:54

So glad I filled my empty tank up yesterday. DH is going to use my car when he can as mine is a diesel and much more economically on fuel then his.

Hoping by the time we need to fill up again things will have calmed down but I can remember the last time this happened when I think the roads were blocked by the farmers and lorry drivers and only essential workers were allowed to fill up at some service stations.

Gridlock here. I cycled a mile on the pavement due to the jam into the petrol station. Utter madness. I can get to work fine but not sure if DD will get to school if this carries on.

Does your buying today fit the description of "panic buying"? Eg. did you still have half a tank or more, or did you fill up today because you would have normally filled up today?

I have half a tank, but that will only last me Monday, Tuesday and to work on Wednesday at the most (plus work related driving) I have half a tank because I have been off this week so it has sat largely unused. So 'half a tank' means nothing when a full tank doesn't last a week.

Work won't have a contingency plan

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 24/09/2021 17:56

It's true people appear to be panic buying but presumably they genuinely need to fill up and use their cars. Maybe they are doing it at half full rather than letting it go to the wire like l do. Fortunately l filled up a couple of days ago.

Oh it's definitely the people's fault. If you saw a news report saying chop your leg off now and you'll win the lottery tomorrow you wouldn't listen so why people listen to the nonsense that the media throw out about petrol and food I don't know.

And yes, literally everyone woke up and decided to get petrol today, we can see how many litres we sell and look at the past trends and sales and it's way up. By 8 o'clock we had sold the usual amount we sell all day on an average Friday.
