@Octopie I work 45 mins away so 90 mins round trip if no traffic in a very large London hospital.
I can get to my shifts tomorrow and Sunday but after that fuel will be too low to risk it. I need to keep some in the tank overnight just in case because I have young children

@IfImLyingImDying

FYI for those wondering, there is a national contingency plan for emergency services and essential workers for fuel shortages. It was enacted the last time this happened in the 90s.

But there aren't shortages. Just stupid people.

When the HGV drivers blockaded the fuel depots in 2000 we were on holiday so we missed all this nonsense but had to hope our car was securely enough parked at the airport not to have its fuel siphoned off.

Must admit when I watched the 6 o'clock news last night, I got up and picked up my car keys because I knew the pumps were going to be chaos tomorrow. In my defence, my orange light did come on while I was driving to my nearest Morrisons... which was pandemonium. It was rammed and people were getting so angry. One of them even did a u-turn in the middle of the forecourt and drove over the cones to get back out again, he was that sick of waiting. I drove on less than a quarter of a mile to the Shell garage where it was just me and one guy who filled his van and 3 Jerry cans. Absolute madness.

Dh tried to go to tesco to do a food shop a d said the roundabout and both roads to the shop were blocked going back a mile or so each way by people wanting petrol. Even worse, a car was actually waiting in the queue on a railway crossing. That genuinely terrified me.

The word "selfish" is overused, but these people really are. At least half of them will have half a tank and no plans to go more than 5 miles at the weekend.

Some of us on the other hand have 5 hour journeys to do to deposit our offspring at university - and then 5 hours back! I complained in a local FB group and got told he should be making his own way with a rucksack and would I still be driving him to work. Idiot. Even 30 years ago everyone arrived at uni with their parents in cars!

IF YOU DO NOT NEED PETROL DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY ANY.

Yes I had worried about that. A lot of movement this weekend, but I agree what a ridiculous comment about going on the train, it is no way comparable to going to work.

Sorry but your child going to uni isn't more important than anyone else's weekend plans.

You don't NEED to drive 10 hours this weekend. I don't NEED to get petrol to go to my friends wedding tomorrow, but we're still both going to visit petrol stations because we have commitments.

I can't believe people drive their cars on reserve, or wait until it's practically running on fresh air before they put fuel in.
Nor saying that they can't afford to put more fuel in before pay day.
You know how much fuel your vehicle uses so budget accordingly on pay day for it.
So if you can't get to work then it's your own fault.
Someone up thread mentioned their fuel light had come on and was going to get fuel on their way home, but didn't. Why not put it in before the light comes on like, oh I don't know, earlier on in the week?

A 3 mile taxi won't cost more than a fiver. If you can afford petrol you can afford a taxi.
Closer to £15 round here, more if it's out of hours, when it could be up to £25. I think I'd be paying £5 to go from my front garden to my back garden here (normal 3 bed house size before any comments about boasting!)

On our local fb page someone posted about filling up 10 cans of petrol. I am fairly certain they were joking but you can imagine the indignation. I am watching from a distance. Grin

We are living in times of uncertainty and crisis. The government is incapable. There is a real problem
We are fed narratives to blame each other to explain difficult situations.
It is hard to swallow the placations. Many people distrust the media, the state, he government.
I don't blame people one bit.

Car went below the 1/4 full line today, I have three medical appointments next week assuming we don't need to do the 30 minute hospital dash for imminent baby before then. Should I have left the car on the drive and crossed my fingers when I'd have normally nipped and filled it today anyway?

£9.50. Where do you live that's only £5?

@Stormwhale

We need petrol for two long journeys this weekend. I'm really concerned we aren't going to be able to get it. We have tickets for an expensive attraction then supposed to see family we haven't seen in months now Sunday, so I have sent dh out to fill up the car, but no luck so far. I hope the people with the full cars ready to sit on their driveways are happy with themselves!

I bet you’d be feeling happy if your car was full and sat on your driveway.

Maybe those people have days out planned too?

FFS all this panic buying shit again, just making a problem that wasn’t there. A shortage has now become a fucking crisis.

Report
Shellfishblastard · 24/09/2021 18:13

If there isn’t a shortage - ie if we have enough to cover normal use, why did it even make the news? It just causes panic.

I’m hoping that it will settle down in a few days so we can buy as normal

This is the weekend most parents are dropping their kids off at uni so it would have been busier than usual anyway.

Does anyone remember this happening before? 1999 or 2000 I think it was.

£25 for 3 miles? Absolutely no way. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere and it's 3 miles as the crow flies but 10 miles actually driving.

I'm not far from Birmingham for everyone asking. Maybe a fiver was a bit over generous but absolutely definitely not more than a tenner, which is still cheaper than a tank of petrol. If I was the OP, though, I'd borrow a push bike if she doesn't own one.

My empty tank light came on last night. " I'll get some in the morning " I thought. I felt very guilty and only put £20 in, but I really had to, to get to work.

Railway crossings are my great fear (I had detailed plans in my head of how to get the children all out when they were younger) I feel a mix of utter rage and deep despair and anxiety when I spot car stopped on a crossing.
