Are fucking selfish, and will be the first to moan when they're takeaway can't be delivered, they can't get a taxi, or places are short staffed as people CAN'T GET TO WORK

@XenoBitch

This issue might not have resolved by Monday, hence why many are filling up their tanks now. I know my mum is attempting fill her car up as she needs it for work, and can not risk not being able to use her car.
But that’s the problem we all need it for work I need petrol but I can wait till Tuesday/ Wednesday latest , where I’d probably fill up this weekend while shopping normally but all these people like your mum who probably wouldn’t get petrol till next week or longer are doing it today because they think I need it for work I can’t risk it . Why aren’t people grasping this ? If you needed it today fine but if you wouldn’t normally fill up then yabu .
crowsfeet57 · 24/09/2021 17:57

A 3 mile taxi won't cost more than a fiver. If you can afford petrol you can afford a taxi.

Where do you live? Here in the South East that's at least £12 and more in rush hour.

IfImLyingImDying · 24/09/2021 17:58

FYI for those wondering, there is a national contingency plan for emergency services and essential workers for fuel shortages. It was enacted the last time this happened in the 90s.

Silverswirl · 24/09/2021 17:59

@wellards

I don't blame people filling up. You snooze, you lose. I'm not normally so bloody minded, but right now, its everyone for themselves

And this illustrates the stupidity perfectly 🤦🏻‍♀️

Jesus. I’m a head trauma nurse who has been on a 12 hour shift today and now can’t get petrol. I’m not sure if I will be able to complete any shifts after tomorrow. Let’s hope you or any members of your family don’t have a nasty accident and come to my hospital where you will have to wait a great deal longer to be seen possibly affecting your future health and outcomes forever. Still, at least you’ve got your £50 of fuel to hug at night. That should make it all better for you.
Octopie · 24/09/2021 17:59

@CuriousBogInTheNight

Yep, nurse here. Not enough petrol to get to work tomorrow, none in driving distance, no public transport. Noone willing to give me a lift as they all have no petrol either. So I hope anyone who panic bought is ok with a longer wait if they need a&e tomorrow...
Why do you let your fuel get so low? Nhs payday is next Tuesday assuming you're an nhs nurse so can't be waiting for payday, and no one else seems to have petrol even though its only been a rush on today? Sounds legitimate.
MrsDThomas · 24/09/2021 18:00

@Silverswirl we all have jobs to go to.

I'm an essential worker.... Not seeing much of a plan here yet

It’s utterly ridiculous. I’m going to visit my elderly parents tomorrow (100 miles away) and have less than a 1/4 tank so yes I filled up today. I actually felt guilty though!

Simonjt · 24/09/2021 18:01

@girlmom21 Here it costs £2.60 just to get inside the taxi, its then an additional £1.70-2.30 per KM.

What council area do you live in with such low taxi rates?

Ionsion · 24/09/2021 18:01

I think priority should be given to NHS and care workers while this is going on like some of the supermarkets did during lockdown. Eg for one hour each day only allow payment in the shop (if there is one of course) and require them to show their ID badge. This could affect hospitals otherwise if staff are unable to get to work

£12? For 3 miles? You're being taken for mugs.
lynntheyresexpeople · 24/09/2021 18:02

Filled up today as the warning light came on on the way home. It wasn't that bad at all, busier than normal but the queues weren't obscene.
The bloke in front filled up his car plus 8 cans though, so people are definitely panic buying.

Are you for fucking real!!?

Stuffin · 24/09/2021 18:02

When the fuel shortage became a real problem nationally last time they made people show their company badge e.g. NHS ID to get fuel.

IfImLyingImDying · 24/09/2021 18:02

@Shitfuckcommaetc all I know is there is a plan. Whether they’ll actually put it in place I have no idea.

PyjamaMamma · 24/09/2021 18:04

Madness here too. I’m planning my routes to avoid all petrol stations because of the tailbacks. The only reason I’m worried is because I spotted the school buses queueing at one of them… it’s already a bit chaotic with a shortage of drivers, I just hope they don’t run out of fuel too.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 24/09/2021 18:04

The word "selfish" is overused, but these people really are. At least half of them will have half a tank and no plans to go more than 5 miles at the weekend.

Some of us on the other hand have 5 hour journeys to do to deposit our offspring at university - and then 5 hours back! I complained in a local FB group and got told he should be making his own way with a rucksack and would I still be driving him to work. Idiot. Even 30 years ago everyone arrived at uni with their parents in cars!

IF YOU DO NOT NEED PETROL DO NOT GO OUT AND BUY ANY.

kristplankook · 24/09/2021 18:04

I filled up yesterday evening as I was on 16 miles. No one else there.

Got stuck today in the traffic queuing for the same petrol station Confused

Just now driven an hour to a weekend away - passed several petrol stations, no queues 🤷🏻‍♀️

camelfinger · 24/09/2021 18:05

I don’t have a car but don’t blame people for filling up slightly earlier than they would do normally. It was the same in 2000 but didn’t last too long.

Not this again. They are NOT the only ones who have to work and without who important things will not go on.

Idiots. We saw it before during the pandemic and here they go again. Utter idiots.
Zeal · 24/09/2021 18:05

Oh fuck.

It is going to be lovely and warm over the weekend and I was going to fill up my petrol mower, hedge cutter and brush cutter and do lots and lots of mowing and strimming working really, really hard.

I guess I will have to think of something else to do now outside in the sunshine. Drat.

lynntheyresexpeople · 24/09/2021 18:05

There isn't even a shortage - a handful or garages in the uk are shorter than usual due to being unable to get HGV drivers to deliver. It's been well documented and advised everywhere that fuel isn't and won't run out. There's absolutely zero need for anyone to be panicking about how they're going to get anywhere, there isn't a fuel shortage! The panic buying will calm down, it will be fine.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/09/2021 18:06

I think if people are just filling their fuel tank then that’s reasonable, even if they could have lasted a few more days I understand the anxiety about waiting and then being left on empty later in the week. I haven’t filled up but my half a tank should last me at least another couple of weeks and I can get to work on the bus or even walk if I have to as it’s only a couple of miles.

If people are filling up additional containers to their cars then that is selfish but just topping up the tank is sort of understandable.

Silverswirl · 24/09/2021 18:06

@Octopie I work 45 mins away so 90 mins round trip if no traffic in a very large London hospital.
I can get to my shifts tomorrow and Sunday but after that fuel will be too low to risk it. I need to keep some in the tank overnight just in case because I have young children
