Met gala party and the rest if the world

I looked at the photos of the 'celebs' attending the Met gala party, obscene amounts of money spent on truly bonkers outfits, all over the top, someone in a suit of armour....kids of famous parents who never had to achieve anything ..... and then seeing Emma Raducanu had been invited.... it felt like I was watching the Hunger Games. Thinking of the poor people in Afghanistan, the desperate migration from Africa to Europe, the people risking their and their kids lives to get to the UK...thinking of America where some people are so poor they can't afford health care. Usually I'm all for a party but honestly, it makes me understand the French revolution.

I dont disagree but people lap it up, ditto the VMAs. I don't exactly seek out celebrity stuff but I use social media and my feeds have felt flooded the last few days. Mostly I'm just bored of it. It all looks so expensive but boring. I saw some of the VMAs last night and I've been to gigs in village hall with more life and atmosphere

plodalong12 · 14/09/2021 15:17

Something tells me you weren’t on the guest list this year and are very unhappy about that.

NiceGerbil · 14/09/2021 15:29

Why was seeing the us open winner invited the final straw for you?

Has this party bothered you in previous years?

SoupDragon · 14/09/2021 15:32

obscene amounts of money spent on truly bonkers outfits

They are often borrowed aren't they?

the80sweregreat · 14/09/2021 15:35

I thought that some of the outfits were just plain daft or looked very uncomfortable to be honest.
These things will always go on whilst others suffer , so I can't get too worked up it. I doubt the fashion world will ever stop because of what is happening in Afghanistan.
The rich will always be around , nothing will ever change on that score.
A few people were hi lighting women's causes too.
I just laughed at the Kardashian woman! Some of them are a bit unhinged.

HalfCakeHalfBiscuit · 14/09/2021 15:56

Should people not go to parties because of the situation in Afghanistan? Or are we allowed to go to parties but only wear scruffs and drink cheap wine? Or can we wear a posh frock, but not too posh (say high st. off the shelf?)

TaraR2020 · 14/09/2021 15:57

I felt the same when I saw pictures of Diana's niece lady whatsername plastered everywhere when she got married recently. It was really distasteful.

EmeraldShamrock · 14/09/2021 16:00

The dresses were spectacular and some looked OTT try hard.
I saw the clip of Conor McGregor brawling he is a violent thug, he shouldn't be invited to a burger bar. 😳

Hopdathelf · 14/09/2021 16:01

And if the Met Gala had been cancelled it would have fixed everything in Afghanistan?

Are you aware it raises a huge amount for charity? It generates a whopping part of the Met Museum’s required budget every year? How many people do you think will just donate £30k each for nothing?

So naive.

DrSbaitso · 14/09/2021 16:06

This feels like a bit of an easy shot. Red carpet events happen.

NiceGerbil · 14/09/2021 16:08

I must admit i have seen any pics or anything so it's easy to avoid this sort of thing if it upsets and angers you.

I'm still not sure why the US open winner attending was apparently the final straw for a PP!

EmeraldShamrock · 14/09/2021 16:10

Hearing Meghan Foxes interview calling her Lover Daddy and other woman ho's so classy. 🙄

AdobeWanKenobi · 14/09/2021 16:40

I feel sorry for Lewis Hamilton, he seemed to have had a run in with his Grans net curtains en route.

Must admit it makes me laugh, the outfits are hysterical and Kim Kardashian arriving dressed as a ninja was amusing.

Olliphant · 14/09/2021 19:12

Well, to answer questions...It made me think of the Hunger Games, where a certain amount of rulers (dressed in grotesque over the top fashion) allow winners if a game (Emma) to join them in their area. In the Hunger games, the majority of people are workers and are looked down upon by this ruling class, who dictate how the workers should live.

To the person who says the gala raises money...if the US taxes its rich in a fairer ( in my view) way then maybe there would be enough money to go around without making the rich feel generous paying 30k for a party ticket. ( way less than tax)

And to everyone else who thinks I could ignore and move on, or am just a party proper....yes, today, at the moment I wrote the thread I was and find I still am. I think displays of wealth at the moment are grotesque.

And to the other person who said what parties can we have and what amount of wealth should we display.....that is why the English aristocracy try to play down their wealth. They watched their cousins get their heads lopped off by the French peasants.

Agree. It's obscene, the level of excess on display and very unfair how some people have everything and other people have nothing.

BrilloPaddy · 14/09/2021 19:48

I just thought that they'd had a rummage in the Z list celeb barrel to be honest and picked out a random selection.

They all need to look bizarre to get in the media.

Shoxfordian · 14/09/2021 20:12

Quite right
If some people are having a shit time then we should all have a shit time Hmm

VladmirsPoutine · 14/09/2021 20:16

This is just the modern day version of 'eat all your dinner as there are kids in the world who are starving'. It's a crass display of opulence but cancelling the gala wouldn't have had a real-world impact on Afganistan.

SionnachRua · 14/09/2021 20:16

It's the Met Gala, dressing OTT/extravagant/ bizarre is a huge part of the event (as long as it's on theme). The people who wear boring, standard runway outfits are a waste of a space. At least Kim Kardashian did something interesting.

Mrsjayy · 14/09/2021 20:21

The met gala is supposed to be over the top and garish that's the whole point. I think you are handwringing . Rich/famous people are always going to exist be lavish and ostentatious and draw attention to themselves, maybe don't look at celeb news !

Mrsjayy · 14/09/2021 20:24

And the costumes they wear are usually made for them to show the work of the costume institute. Now did Kim K wear her over the head sock on all night ?

FlyingScott · 14/09/2021 20:36

I assumed the Met gala was a police event & wondered why on earth Lewis Hamilton had anything to do with it Confused

Mrsjayy · 14/09/2021 20:49

No I think its a fashion museum Grin

Againstmachine · 14/09/2021 20:50

I do agree with Hunger games comment it seems very like the pre contest events.

DamnUserName21 · 14/09/2021 20:52

I'm not sure why you've singled out the Met gala when there is such a massive disparity between rich and poor in the UK (assuming you are in the UK!) We venerate the Royals and other super-wealthy families and piss on the homeless and poor.
Off with their heads, I say!!
