Met gala party and the rest if the world

I looked at the photos of the 'celebs' attending the Met gala party, obscene amounts of money spent on truly bonkers outfits, all over the top, someone in a suit of armour....kids of famous parents who never had to achieve anything ..... and then seeing Emma Raducanu had been invited.... it felt like I was watching the Hunger Games. Thinking of the poor people in Afghanistan, the desperate migration from Africa to Europe, the people risking their and their kids lives to get to the UK...thinking of America where some people are so poor they can't afford health care. Usually I'm all for a party but honestly, it makes me understand the French revolution.

@PrincessNutella no one is arguing with you.

I talked about the Gala ball as it occurred recently. The inclusion of Emma, the recent winner of a prestigious game made me think if the Hunger Games. The recent events in the world, the pandemic, the loss of life and income for so many made the extreme opulence of the Gala stand out.

No one mentioned the Royal family.

Comparing it to the French Revolution isn’t accurate though. These people are making a shit ton of money because poorer people GIVE them that money WILLINGLY - watching their shows, buying their albums, lapping up the gossip mags

malificent7 · 15/09/2021 13:24

I do think it makes them look very far removed from reality but atcthe same time the ridiculous attire made me laugh. People will always " waste" money on such frivolities. I do get what you mean by the hunger games though but most people think socialism dosn't work [ shrug].

DrSbaitso · 15/09/2021 13:25

The inclusion of Emma, the recent winner of a prestigious game made me think if the Hunger Games.

She was playing a very different kind of game, to be fair!

Olliphant · 15/09/2021 13:27

@DrSbaitso thank god! Although Emma is so cool she'd probably win real Hunger games too!!

Againstmachine · 15/09/2021 13:33

Oh stop fawning over her she's a tennis player a very good one, but that is kind of pathetic.

Olliphant · 15/09/2021 13:38

@Againstmachine I will fawn over who I like, but thanks for the instruction.

Grin at Kk being talented!

Nomorefuckstogive · 15/09/2021 13:49

You’re right, OP, it is obscene in many ways. However, it boosts some people’s careers - well done, Lewis Hamilton, I hope it gave your table the necessary exposure - and it gives us something silly to talk about for five minutes, instead of worrying about Afghanistan, Syria, the UK poverty gap, politicians’ and royals’ greed, Covid, family health, job security, university fees and pensions. These are my personal anxieties and I imagine that many of us have even worse worries. It’s escapism, albeit on a staggeringly extravagant level. Vapid, stupid escapism.

LukeEvansWife · 15/09/2021 13:52

These people aren’t taxing us or forcing us to work for them. I don’t like sleb culture / If everyone stopped discussing them, they would have no brand and would therefore become irrelevant.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 15/09/2021 13:57

I definitely don't look at those outlandish outfits and think 'display of wealth' it's more 'expression'.

KittenKong · 15/09/2021 14:04

‘A fool and his money are easily parted’ and ‘I bet they don’t have to acrub their own loo’ (as I am sure they don’t invite the ‘worthy’ (just the famous)

Welcome to the 21st C, HasaDigaEebowai

Ive just asked both very much 21st Century teen DSs and neither of them have heard of either of them. So your patronising bollocks is clearly more to do with you fangirling and nothing to do with the fact that those people are "more than A* listers".

I suspect what you meant to write was “Thank you for enlightening me.”!

(And I’ll try not to draw conclusions based on a comparison between my list of contemporary talent and yours …)

Againstmachine · 15/09/2021 14:31

The "contemporary talent" is irrelevant you say more than a A Lister, the people you mentioned are not even A Listers.

Wow. First you have a dig at someone for not being able to spell a randomer’s name and for not knowing that person and then you insult them again! Aren’t you a pleasant person Hmm
ConstanceGracy · 15/09/2021 15:06

It is not an award show. It is a gala where the rich and not so rich political figures get to hob knob with each other.
Same dif, don’t watch that shite either ..

HasaDigaEebowai · 15/09/2021 22:21

(Although … it’s always worthwhile ensuring you spell unfamiliar names correctly, to avoid being lumped in with people you might not like …)

Oh I missed this one! But I’m not going to be a bitch back because I don’t want to be lumped in with people I might not like..

SleepingBunnies21 · 15/09/2021 22:39

@EmeraldShamrock

Hearing Meghan Foxes interview calling her Lover Daddy and other woman ho's so classy. 🙄
Megan Fox is not ..... Thandie Newton, let's put it that way.

She can generally manage at least one mind boggling, inane statement every time she opens her mouth.

SleepingBunnies21 · 15/09/2021 22:40

I know Thandie Newton has actually changed her name/spelling but I'm currently too lazy to look it up.

Islamorada · 15/09/2021 22:46

Come the revolution comrade, come the revolution..

🤣🤣🤣

Ickle37 · 15/09/2021 23:00

I agree. I thought the hunger games immediately! Where is there space for this anymore? They looked like plonkers, tbh. No interest, the world is rich in problems and these rich seem to want to party through it.
Fundraisers , whatever, but the Met Gala is just so gauche , naff, and ergh. Maybe for a younger set. I dont know. But i agree its crap.

mustlovegin · 15/09/2021 23:00

Tacky, tasteless and self-indulgent

mustlovegin · 15/09/2021 23:03

I don't know why you are focusing on her specifically. Someone who is invited can decide not to go, surely
