Met gala party and the rest if the world

I looked at the photos of the 'celebs' attending the Met gala party, obscene amounts of money spent on truly bonkers outfits, all over the top, someone in a suit of armour....kids of famous parents who never had to achieve anything ..... and then seeing Emma Raducanu had been invited.... it felt like I was watching the Hunger Games. Thinking of the poor people in Afghanistan, the desperate migration from Africa to Europe, the people risking their and their kids lives to get to the UK...thinking of America where some people are so poor they can't afford health care. Usually I'm all for a party but honestly, it makes me understand the French revolution.

Well, I certainly think the gushing over "Elliot" Page and "his" green "carnation" was ridiculous.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 16/09/2021 03:15

I agree its (wealth inequality) is bought into sharp relief by covid plus I feel a bit like we have been living in a bubble in the west. But op this isn't a new revelation. Anyway the revolution will not be televised Grin. Off to look up Hamilton..

@plodalong12

What an odd comment

Booknooks · 16/09/2021 03:43

It has always been thus. I think these kind of events were better pre social media as it was the only real glimpse into the entertainment industry (and I do enjoy films and TV so I'm a fan!), but now you can follow them and see what they're up to anyway; and these seem more of a way to flex and show off.

Booknooks · 16/09/2021 03:45

To add, although the pandemic has been universally crap, there have always been countries in turmoil, people suffering- not saying that makes it okay, but this isn't anything new, perhaps we are just less ignorant now and can empathise more?

KittenKong · 16/09/2021 07:57

And the menu was all vegan. I wonder if it was nice? I did see one attendee on social media saying that it was woeful.

I often find that vegan food makes me feel sick (there’s definitely something used - maybe fake Mayo or coagulant?) than doesn’t agree with me. So I’d be dressed in a bin bag and liking in the loos. Sounds definitely worth $35k.

Was there any celeb entertainment? A fab goodie bag (I love an adult event that gives our party bags...)?

Maybebaby111 · 16/09/2021 08:00

I can’t disagree with you. It’s obscene. But I also don’t think we should have a society where a person can be a billionaire.

Things never change.

mustlovegin · 16/09/2021 08:10

Oh dear

I feel sorry for Lewis Hamilton, he seemed to have had a run in with his Grans net curtains en route.

Must admit it makes me laugh, the outfits are hysterical and Kim Kardashian arriving dressed as a ninja was amusing.

That was almost word for word what I said to my mate when I saw his outfit!

Really made me laugh.

I must admit, I find myself quite fascinated by the outifts. I find myself wondering what drugs the designers were on to get such weird ideas, but also intrigued as to how some of them are actually made. They manage to get fabric into the most peculiar shapes.

DrSbaitso · 16/09/2021 08:14

James Felton said that Lewis Hamilton looked like his legs were getting married.

Doesn't Elton John, he of such quiet, staid and unassuming dress sense, have a charity ball every year where people are required to dress like the Golden Mile?

Andante57 · 16/09/2021 08:16

and the horsefaced ladies wear floofy monstrosities of hats my imagination?

PrincessNutella I thought it was frowned upon to disparage women’s looks on mn? Maybe it’s ok if they’re posh.

Againstmachine · 16/09/2021 08:22

Is this the same Lewis Hamilton who lectures about climate change who has taken a jet over to attend the met gala from Italy.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/09/2021 08:27

If I'd paid £35k to attend, I'd at least want a steak

KittenKong · 16/09/2021 10:31

I’d expect a pick of the artwork to take home too.

It's all posery faffery it doesn't mean anything does it ? It's a place for celebs to peacock 🦚 its fuel for them .

Oo a 🦚 emoji I like it Grin

I can't believe AOC went to the Met Gala, it's hardly her target audience? I can't imagine Bernie showing up in his mittens

Andante57 · 16/09/2021 17:50

@HeddaGarbled

It does seem like the sort of events pictured in dystopian fiction signifying degenerate societies just before they got what was coming to them.
I think there may well be revolution or civil war in America and Britain in the next 50 years. Whether it will be a sectarian war, a race war or rich v. poor I don’t know.
Againstmachine · 16/09/2021 17:55

Imagine wearing a tax the rich dress whilst attending the met gala, you aren't protesting against them you are joining in.

MorganKitten · 16/09/2021 19:17

Most of the money from tickets go to several charities
The outfits are themed each year and normally borrowed/free
If you don’t like it don’t look at the photos?

mustlovegin · 17/09/2021 09:02

*I can't believe AOC went to the Met Gala, it's hardly her target audience?

A place full of champagne socialists, make of it what you will

Who coughed up the £35k ticket in this case?

HeddaGarbled · 17/09/2021 11:24

I read that it’s generated a lot of interest in the Tax the Rich movement as well as the predictable criticism. She knows what she’s doing.

Andante57 · 17/09/2021 12:52

You could say ‘don’t look at the photos’ about anything. If photos like these are on the front pages they’re going to attract comment.
