Met gala party and the rest if the world

I looked at the photos of the 'celebs' attending the Met gala party, obscene amounts of money spent on truly bonkers outfits, all over the top, someone in a suit of armour....kids of famous parents who never had to achieve anything ..... and then seeing Emma Raducanu had been invited.... it felt like I was watching the Hunger Games. Thinking of the poor people in Afghanistan, the desperate migration from Africa to Europe, the people risking their and their kids lives to get to the UK...thinking of America where some people are so poor they can't afford health care. Usually I'm all for a party but honestly, it makes me understand the French revolution.

But that has been the case since time immemorial. Some people are rich, some don’t have a pot to piss in.

frumpety · 15/09/2021 08:13

How did Debbie Harry go for a wee in her get up ?

KingsleyShacklebolt · 15/09/2021 08:22

It's basically a wearable art/fancy dress party for rich and famous people who are usually borrowing the costumes.

Exactly this. it's about showcasing designer creativity and clever use of design and fabric. It's not about people wearing party clothes.

I cannot be doing with this attitude that nobody can have nice things or do nice things if everyone in the entire world can't have the same. Ridiculous.

DrSbaitso · 15/09/2021 08:46

If we're going to go for Hunger Games comparisons, remember that clothes were very important there. Of course there was the excessive, extreme fashion of the Capitol (and the real offence in that was the context in which it existed), but Katniss was very taken with the power of her chariot ride costumes, and she even releases an "oh" of awe when she sees herself in her candlelight dress that she wears for the first post-Games interview. And what about Cinna, sending all kinds of messages of rebellion, and gaining support for Katniss, through his sartorial designs?

Or the prequel, with the significance of Lucy Gray's rainbow dress?

I don't think Collins was saying "high, extreme fashion is always evil" as much as she was saying "clothes can be powerful". And I'd agree.

FrankOrTheBeans · 15/09/2021 09:00

Agreed. It's a vapid, pointless event where a stupid amount of money is spent by designers and "celebrities" to contribute further to environmental waste by creating one-off tacky outfits. I'm sure many of them fly in by private jets for the event too.

Very much "do as we say and not as we do" hypocrisy from a bunch of "celebrities" who like preaching to the public! I was very disappointed by some of the British celebrities who I thought would turn down an invite to this type of pointless event - Emily Blunt, Carey Mulligan. I thought they had more integrity!

DrSbaitso · 15/09/2021 09:07

I've never been to an A list event with crazy dress codes, but I have been invited to a few high end functions with some very rich people in attendance, at luxury hotels or manors, through work or people I've met through work. Many were charity fundraisers, some were promotional or industry networking events. They sometimes made the local, regional and/or trade press.

Am I a moral vacuum?

Valeriekat · 15/09/2021 10:11

Yeah... the Met is hardly short of cash though is it?

SleepingStandingUp · 15/09/2021 10:20

@EmeraldShamrock

Emma Raducanu was beautiful radiant and natural.
Emma Raducanu would look gorgeous in a wrinkled bin liner tbf!!
BreadPita · 15/09/2021 10:20

I'm sure that most of them do donate to charitable causes and occasions like this are how they get attention which allows them to make their money.
Kim Kardashian's money has definitely been involved in some philanthropic causes and likely than it would have been if her bet worth were split amongst the population of the world (we'd each get a few pennies).
Her "empire" was initiated by (allegedly) allowing the release of a tape of her having sex with her boyfriend. Getting attention is the whole business.

KittenKong · 15/09/2021 10:23

I thought it was a ‘pay per plate’ charity bash? I’m just amused by the awful outfits and people trying to out-dress each other. I have seen photos of young men (self described as men before anyone asks) in long gowns (obviously thinking that they will be the only one ‘outrageous enough’ to don a frock).

Most of the outfits are just awful.

DrSbaitso · 15/09/2021 10:24

Well no, but that's partly because it holds events like this.

It's true that the best way to male a large fortune is to start with a small one.

Her "empire" was initiated by (allegedly) allowing the release of a tape of her having sex with her boyfriend.

Is that how? I've never understood what she was famous for, apart from being famous. But why would anyone care more about her sex tape than anyone else's?

JudgeJ · 15/09/2021 10:49

@Shoxfordian

Quite right If some people are having a shit time then we should all have a shit time Hmm
If it makes all the critics happy I seem to recall someone saying that the food there was poor!

You can pay, but most of the celebs are invited. Basically as the “attraction” to get others to pay.
KittenKong · 15/09/2021 12:37

I mean I like a good laugh with the best of them... but those outfits - bonkers!

PrincessNutella · 15/09/2021 12:54

"that is why the English aristocracy try to play down their wealth. They watched their cousins get their heads lopped off by the French peasants."

Oh do they now? Does QEII not have enough castles? Does she not own treasuries of jewels? Are the royal weddings underdone? Are those many, many occasions in which British lords get dressed to the nines and the horsefaced ladies wear floofy monstrosities of hats my imagination? Why is this one silly party sending you over the edge, I wonder?

TaraR2020 · 15/09/2021 12:57

@PrincessNutella actually the person you quoted is right

HasaDigaEebowai · 15/09/2021 13:06

Nope. Michaela Coel was there. She’s beyond A List. Plus Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, Maisie Williams, Lupita Nyong’o. (And I genuinely have no interest in celebrities.)

I’ve never even heard of Michaela Cole - who on earth is she and how is she beyond A List. Likewise Frank Ocean? Who?

Surely A Listers are the Tom hanks, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streeps of the world?

I’m simultaneously sad that you’ve so far missed the advent of this century’s greatest screen genius, and a complete Titan of contemporary music - and thrilled for you as you still have time to discover them both.

Suggest you start with “I May Destroy You” - find on iplayer / streaming services, and “Blonde” album - find on Spotify or wherever.

Other than Maisie Williams, I have never heard of any of them. And you claim to have no interest?

Which is the screen genius and which is the Titan of music?
SoupDragon · 15/09/2021 13:16

You must have been living under a rock if you've never heard of Billie Eilish.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 15/09/2021 13:16

(Although … it’s always worthwhile ensuring you spell unfamiliar names correctly, to avoid being lumped in with people you might not like …)

It’s Michaela Coel

PrincessNutella · 15/09/2021 13:16

They may have played down their wealth in comparison to the French aristocrats, and the Queen may have horsey tastes, but they do love money and they do love to spend it. They certainly aren't eager to part with the lavish estates they built stone by stone with the blood, sweat, and resources of people of color the world over. They aren't eager to part with the gems they stole from the lands they conquered. The British royalty and nobles and upper classes have endless "charity" events like the Met Gala in which their appearance is considered a form of work, and they are written about with great admiration. It is all nonsense.

LukeEvansWife · 15/09/2021 13:19

Just looked her up - green hair and dodgy eyebrows? Never heard anything she’s done (but I’m of any age where contemporary pop music leaves me cold)
