Met gala party and the rest if the world

I looked at the photos of the 'celebs' attending the Met gala party, obscene amounts of money spent on truly bonkers outfits, all over the top, someone in a suit of armour....kids of famous parents who never had to achieve anything ..... and then seeing Emma Raducanu had been invited.... it felt like I was watching the Hunger Games. Thinking of the poor people in Afghanistan, the desperate migration from Africa to Europe, the people risking their and their kids lives to get to the UK...thinking of America where some people are so poor they can't afford health care. Usually I'm all for a party but honestly, it makes me understand the French revolution.

Brooklyn Beckham, jesus wept. Does him and his fiance really need to hang over each other all the time? It all looks so false and silly. And attention seeking. Which is probably the point. If my boys behaved like that I'd worry. His parents probably think its amazing.
C'est la vie i guess

SlackieBeaver · 14/09/2021 21:09

My mums a regular down the gala and no one dresses like that. Not even if they win a full house.

toolazytothinkofausername · 14/09/2021 21:13

YANBU. I agree it felt inappropriate with the world as it is.

MintyGreenDream · 14/09/2021 21:19

I thought Kendall Jenner and JLo looked stunning.Wasnt kean on Kim Kardashians get up though.

Massive cringefest. The ‘celebrities’ all seemed even more vain and desperate for attention than usual. Quite ludicrous.

It is YouTube that reminds me most of the Hunger Games. The sheer pointless waste of so many of the videos. I can also see your point about the gala.

Proudboomer · 14/09/2021 21:43

The whole thing is the rich patting themselves on the back for being rich and then you have the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez turning up to a $35k diner in her tax the rich dress.
You couldn’t make it ip if you tried.

Edmontine · 14/09/2021 21:56

@BrilloPaddy

I just thought that they'd had a rummage in the Z list celeb barrel to be honest and picked out a random selection.

They all need to look bizarre to get in the media.

Nope. Michaela Coel was there. She’s beyond A* List. Plus Frank Ocean, Billie Eilish, Maisie Williams, Lupita Nyong’o. (And I genuinely have no interest in celebrities.)

I agree, and have always thought the same, about the rich people tax / charity dichotomy. But there’s no reason why talented people shouldn’t be celebrated and shown off by the institutions that sell them to us. In the midst of fire, storm and pestilence, we need some reminder of something else.

Michaela cole isn't beyond a list she isn't even a list.

And masies star is fading fast after game of thrones.

And.feank ocean he ain't no Billy.

Edmontine · 14/09/2021 22:03

Matters of opinion, I guess …

Cosmos123 · 14/09/2021 22:07

I thought Kim K looked her best ever. Grin

BananaPB · 14/09/2021 22:09

If there had been no Met Gala last night, those celebrities would still be insanely rich this morning.
I'm not fashionista but imo it keeps Vogue and Anna Wintour relevant, the Met funded, the paps happy as there's lots to photograph and the celebs happy as they've been classed as "extra special" and get to hobnob with other "extra special" people in a lovely location.

BananaPB · 14/09/2021 22:11

And the designers get publicity.

Bontanics · 14/09/2021 22:16

It's for the costume institute. They're not going to turn up in a topshop tube dress and a pair of strappy sandals from Dorothy Perkins.

Vanuatu · 14/09/2021 22:23

Edgar Allan Poe would have loved this party.

I look forward to seeing what people wear to the Met Gala, and the over the top outfits/costumes. I do wish more stuck to the theme instead of striving for ‘pretty’. I was also shocked at some of the attendees (reality stars/youtubers/influencers).

I can see where your coming from with the Hungers Games comments though!

HeddaGarbled · 14/09/2021 22:32

It does seem like the sort of events pictured in dystopian fiction signifying degenerate societies just before they got what was coming to them.

Confused102 · 14/09/2021 22:32

They look like a bunch of clowns walking around. Laughable.

I think, in fairness to her, it’s $35k if you’re aren’t invited. She, and other New York politicians, are invited so she didn’t pay that.
Raquelos · 14/09/2021 22:39

@Olliphant

Well, to answer questions...It made me think of the Hunger Games, where a certain amount of rulers (dressed in grotesque over the top fashion) allow winners if a game (Emma) to join them in their area. In the Hunger games, the majority of people are workers and are looked down upon by this ruling class, who dictate how the workers should live.

To the person who says the gala raises money...if the US taxes its rich in a fairer ( in my view) way then maybe there would be enough money to go around without making the rich feel generous paying 30k for a party ticket. ( way less than tax)

And to everyone else who thinks I could ignore and move on, or am just a party proper....yes, today, at the moment I wrote the thread I was and find I still am. I think displays of wealth at the moment are grotesque.

And to the other person who said what parties can we have and what amount of wealth should we display.....that is why the English aristocracy try to play down their wealth. They watched their cousins get their heads lopped off by the French peasants.

OMG no shit, it's like capitalism is bad right?? Who could possibly have seen that coming!!

Come the revolution comrade, come the revolution...

whyamisobored · 14/09/2021 22:39

I got a 3-pack of Trebor mints in Iceland this morning.

On reflection, I should have sent that quid to Afghanistan; I'm just as bad as that lot. I shall check my privilege.

Desperatelyseekingreason · 14/09/2021 22:41

I think it's grotesque that so many applaud and defend the excess displayed. Hunger games is a pretty good analogy in my mind.
