Leftover meat for sandwiches tomorrow, will school really care?

7yo DD, year 3.

I don’t get paid until tomorrow, have about 40p to my name until then. Won't have time to do a shop before school. I have bread, butter, chocolate, fruit and juice for lunchboxes. The only filling I have is leftover chicken or tuna from the roast I did today.

I usually cook up a big chicken for the two of us and then use the leftovers in curries or for my own sandwiches over the next week.

When I was with ExH he would forbid me from putting leftover meat on sandwiches for DDs lunchbox (she was at Nursery at the time). Said it would make the Nursery (and probably now school) think we’re poor and common. He said it shows we can’t feed our child properly – it was fine to put the sliced sandwich chicken or sandwich ham or cheese, but tuna, leftover meat/poultry or egg where not allowed.

DD happily eats chicken (or pork or beef) sandwiches after school on the days she has a hot lunch, so I don’t see this as any different.

So will school really think badly of me as a parent for putting leftover meat in a sandwich for her? I doubt myself a lot and making lunch box tonight for tomorrow could hear him in my head telling me I was disgusting and setting us up for an investigation by SS (yes ExH was abusive and violent).

Leftover meat is much healthier than sandwich meat.

You're not doing anything wrong, ignore the thoughts of your ex and carry on.

Nahhh · 12/09/2021 20:38

If anything surely having leftover meet for a sandwich is a little treat? I know it is for me.

I can’t imagine anyone, let alone school, judging you for it

ParkheadParadise · 12/09/2021 20:38

No, I don't think the school will care. Your ex sounds a right prick 😜

RedskyThisNight · 12/09/2021 20:39

How will the school know it is leftovers and not meat you cooked up specially for the purposes of making sandwiches?

No one will care.
Probably no one will notice.

actiongirl1978 · 12/09/2021 20:39

Omg you poor thing. That's a terrible way for your ex to treat you.

If it makes you feel any more confident, my DH is posh and my DC are at private school and we all have leftover meat on sandwiches. It's absolutely normal.

You are giving your child a nutritioua meal!

Scautish · 12/09/2021 20:39

I do not understand how leftover meat in a sandwich would ever be viewed badly (obviously assuming it’s not many days leftover)

Your ex is insane thinking this. Leftover-meat sandwiches are delicious. Please do not give it a second thought.

mrwalkensir · 12/09/2021 20:39

Your ex was ridiculous - surely leftover meat means that you had plenty? Not that that is the point :) We've done a large chicken today for just the two of us - that'll be sandwiches all week!

toomuchlaundry · 12/09/2021 20:39

Absolutely fine. Ignore ExH

dementedpixie · 12/09/2021 20:39

Leftover meat is fine to use. Noone will be judging you

Returnoftheowl · 12/09/2021 20:39

No, I don't think the school will care. Your ex sounds a right prick 😜
Absolutely this!

Not something school are going to judge you on.

Dottyflorals · 12/09/2021 20:39

Leftover chicken sandwich is the best! We always fight over who gets to use the leftover chicken for lunch the next day-and that’s for school and work lunches!

Your ex is wrong!

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 12/09/2021 20:39

You're worried that SS will get involved because you put left over chicken in your daughter's sandwich?

No, that's not going to happen. In fact there is nothing better than a leftover chicken sandwich! I'm sorry your ex was such an areshole.

beela · 12/09/2021 20:39

Your ex is mad. Leftover roast meat is likely to be much higher quality than sliced sandwich meat, which is usually bulked out with water. And what's wrong with tuna??

VaguelyInteresting · 12/09/2021 20:40

The school would far far far rather see a child eat home cooked roast chicken, than processed, mechanically separated, salted packet ham or chicken.

You sound traumatised, OP. Do you have any support? A counseller or a therapist? I’m sorry he’s done this to you.

Your daughter will absolutely be better off with homemade chicken than anything else you’ve mentioned.

isitjustlockdown · 12/09/2021 20:40

It's totally fine, and fresh meat is much better for you than processed.

We generally don't buy and "sandwich" meats and generally roast joints and use part for hot meals and part for sandwich fillings. We all prefer the texture/taste of roasted meat to the processed sandwich meat.

Hellocatshome · 12/09/2021 20:40

School won't care one little bit. Some left over roast chicken is very healthy. Tune is a perfectly good sandwich filling. Your ex is a knob.

thegcatsmother · 12/09/2021 20:40

Roast chicken is better than sandwich chicken, and why are school investigating the contents of a sandwich anyway?

We are having roast chicken tonight, and my 25 year old ds will doubtless be having some in his lunch for work tomorrow.

You won't be judged at all.

TheKeatingFive · 12/09/2021 20:40

Your ex is staggeringly stupid.

Of course it’s fine to give her the roast chicken. Anyone who would judge you for that is thick as mince

AgnesNaismith · 12/09/2021 20:40

You poor thing Flowers

Leftovers are a sign that you cooked your daughter a lovely meal today and that you put some thought into her lunchbox.

SueblueNZ · 12/09/2021 20:40

YANBU. Leftover chicken sandwiches are perfectly fine for her lunch. You are being a good mum. So sorry you had to endure his ridiculous ideas and control.

BlotBangRub · 12/09/2021 20:40

The school won't care.
Make the sandwiches for her to enjoy.
Hell, mine used to go with jam sandwiches sometimes if that's what they wanted.

ifigoup · 12/09/2021 20:41

I don’t know who is saying YABU and why, but they are crazy and so is your ex. Leftover roast meat in a sandwich is absolutely fine and arguably better (less salt etc.) at ham or deli meats which nobody would bat an eyelid at!

LordEmsworth · 12/09/2021 20:41

I am not going to vote because your ex is a moron, and you've not made it clear which way to vote to say that he is a moron Grin

Not only will the school not care, they won't even know you didn't roast it especially for the sandwich! Leftover meat is neither poor nor common... On the other hand, throwing out leftovers is not rich nor posh, it's twatty behaviour. Leftover meat in sandwiches is entirely 100% normal, and frankly the main reason for cooking the meat in the first place!

gogohm · 12/09/2021 20:42

Your DD's school will think you are an amazing mum for putting proper (not processed) meat into her sandwich! (If they notice which I doubt)

mushforbrain · 12/09/2021 20:42

I would be SO pleased if my children would eat roast chicken full stop, I would be ECSTATIC if they would eat leftovers in their lunch box. Your ex is beyond stupid.
