Leftover meat for sandwiches tomorrow, will school really care?

7yo DD, year 3.

I don’t get paid until tomorrow, have about 40p to my name until then. Won't have time to do a shop before school. I have bread, butter, chocolate, fruit and juice for lunchboxes. The only filling I have is leftover chicken or tuna from the roast I did today.

I usually cook up a big chicken for the two of us and then use the leftovers in curries or for my own sandwiches over the next week.

When I was with ExH he would forbid me from putting leftover meat on sandwiches for DDs lunchbox (she was at Nursery at the time). Said it would make the Nursery (and probably now school) think we’re poor and common. He said it shows we can’t feed our child properly – it was fine to put the sliced sandwich chicken or sandwich ham or cheese, but tuna, leftover meat/poultry or egg where not allowed.

DD happily eats chicken (or pork or beef) sandwiches after school on the days she has a hot lunch, so I don’t see this as any different.

So will school really think badly of me as a parent for putting leftover meat in a sandwich for her? I doubt myself a lot and making lunch box tonight for tomorrow could hear him in my head telling me I was disgusting and setting us up for an investigation by SS (yes ExH was abusive and violent).

I always thought leftover meat in sandwiches was a luxury.

We're all having roast chicken sandwiches tomorrow.

If anything roast chicken/pork or boiled egg is more nutritious than processed sandwich fillings.

bellabasset · 12/09/2021 20:57

I mix leftover chopped roast chicken with a mixture of mayo & yoghurt flavoured with a little tandoori powder.

ChickenSandwichYum · 12/09/2021 20:57

@CornishTiger

It’s fine!

I’m more concerned how little you have at end of month. Not much room for emergencies. Are you in need of benefit or budgeting advice. Might be worth posting in money section in case there is anything that can be improved.

@CornishTiger I usually have more leftover it's just because of the back to school shop costing so much. She will only wear the logoed jumpers and cardigans (flat out refuses the none logoed ones, would rather freeze and has sat all day in school without a cardigan freezing when there's a none logoed one in her bag) and they're £10 each she ended up needing 3 new ones and I made less than half than 1 back selling the grown out ones on, and she needed shoes and skirts as well.

Its much more aspirational in class terms to have home cooked hand carved (beautifully fresh and tasty) roast chicken. I am sorry he got in your head.

FlumpsAreShit · 12/09/2021 20:59

Absolutely bizarre of him. As a child leftover roast chicken sandwiches were a massive treat and probably much better quality than packaged sliced meat. He is talking bollocks.

We send DD in with leftover pasta all the time. Maybe the school think we are poor as church mice, I doubt they notice though.

I was going to say, if anything left over meat is posher, it's nicer if you can slice it as thinly as possible though.

jellybe · 12/09/2021 21:00

Leftover meat in school sandwiches is the best. Used to love it. Your ex sounds crazy and cruel to make you think/ feel this way.

BigRedDuck · 12/09/2021 21:00

I'm glad he is your ex. What the fuck is he thinking 😂😂😂
Another one who sends the kids in with leftovers. My daughter always asks for extra chicken to be cooked for her sandwiches!

Hopeisnotastrategy · 12/09/2021 21:01

It sounds absolutely lovely and nourishing, go into school with your head held high! 😊

On a side note, you sound like a lovely mum who wants to do the best for her DC. 👏

GreyhoundG1rl · 12/09/2021 21:02

I don't understand Confused. On what planet is the leftovers of a roast going into sandwiches considered a bad thing? Isn't this what you do?

Haffiana · 12/09/2021 21:02

I am genuinely posh. I would never, ever buy processed, packeted sliced chicken to put in a sandwich. I would only use left-over roast chicken.

viques · 12/09/2021 21:04

Get yourself a pen and add one more item to the

This is why my ex is my ex list

Myonlysunshine123 · 12/09/2021 21:05

Roast chicken sandwiches/and wraps are exactly what goes into packed lunches here on a monday,(I've just made them).I actually feel fancier doing that than "sandwich" meat. Smile I've never thought that the school would think less of me. The ex is wrong here, not you.

Hoppinggreen · 12/09/2021 21:05

I am neither poor nor common (honest) and I would happily use the chicken in a sandwich, your ex is a total Dick.

KhoshkaKatya · 12/09/2021 21:07

Honestly, if they notice at all, they will think it is healthier and better.

I’m so sorry that man did that to you.

Paperyfish · 12/09/2021 21:08

I’m sorry I’m a bit stupid and said yabu…as in yabu to think the school would be bothered by left over meat sandwiches. You are not being unreasonable to give your child a very normal and nutritious meal. Sorry again, I’m dim.

CornishTiger · 12/09/2021 21:09

@ChickenSandwichYum ah that’s a relief that it’s not a typical month then. Uniform cleared us out this month too.

SofiaMichelle · 12/09/2021 21:09

Sounds fantastic to me, OP (unlike your dickhead ex).

Think about it this way, if you went to buy cooked meat straight off the bone at huge expense from a posh deli would that be ok for dickhead ex?

Lalliella · 12/09/2021 21:09

Your ex sounds vile. Leftover meat is perfectly fine and healthier than for example processed meat. Nobody will give it a second though except to think ooh ChickenSandwichYumDD has a nice lunch!

User135792468 · 12/09/2021 21:10

I’m sorry you’re questioning yourself over this. Leftover meat is absolutely fine and is so much nicer than sliced chicken in a pack. Your ex is a prat. No teacher would ever ever judge a packed lunch with w sandwich with meat or tuna in. I doubt they’d bat an eye if it was jam or Nutella. A cold happy meal on the other hand… well that was an awkward phone call home to a parent.

CaMePlaitPas · 12/09/2021 21:10

OP, you are fine, you are free, you do what YOU think is best.

I personally love a leftover meat sandwich.

Cocomarine · 12/09/2021 21:10

It’s just even more bizarre that - as others have said - if you want to be a total arsehole and talk about class judgements over sandwich meats, then roast chicken leftovers beats processed slices any day.

You poor thing - any time you hear his voice in your head about other things, there’ll always be people on MN to reassure you that he’s an arse-talking abusive prick. How love he’s an ex - well done you 👏🏻❤️

megletthesecond · 12/09/2021 21:10

Leftover meat is fine.

Your ex is nuts.

Disfordarkchocolate · 12/09/2021 21:10

Leftover chicken is my favourite sandwich.
