Leftover meat for sandwiches tomorrow, will school really care?

7yo DD, year 3.

I don’t get paid until tomorrow, have about 40p to my name until then. Won't have time to do a shop before school. I have bread, butter, chocolate, fruit and juice for lunchboxes. The only filling I have is leftover chicken or tuna from the roast I did today.

I usually cook up a big chicken for the two of us and then use the leftovers in curries or for my own sandwiches over the next week.

When I was with ExH he would forbid me from putting leftover meat on sandwiches for DDs lunchbox (she was at Nursery at the time). Said it would make the Nursery (and probably now school) think we’re poor and common. He said it shows we can’t feed our child properly – it was fine to put the sliced sandwich chicken or sandwich ham or cheese, but tuna, leftover meat/poultry or egg where not allowed.

DD happily eats chicken (or pork or beef) sandwiches after school on the days she has a hot lunch, so I don’t see this as any different.

So will school really think badly of me as a parent for putting leftover meat in a sandwich for her? I doubt myself a lot and making lunch box tonight for tomorrow could hear him in my head telling me I was disgusting and setting us up for an investigation by SS (yes ExH was abusive and violent).

It's just cold chicken. I wouldn't even call it leftovers. It's lovely, and as someone already said, luxurious in sandwiches.

SusannaM · 12/09/2021 20:48

Leftover meat is far healthier, no additives and perfectly normal to use it in sandwiches for your kid's lunchbox.
I'm sorry your abusive ex is still in your head and knocking your confidence. Don't doubt yourself, you seem like a caring mum, your ex on the other hand sounds a nasty piece of work.

HTH1 · 12/09/2021 20:49

“Poor and common” Grin also don’t forget to send SS my way tomorrow as I’m doing the same thing!

BlaiseAnais · 12/09/2021 20:50

At best your ex has huge insecurities about his upbringing and position in life and or is a bit stupid. At worse he's an abusive asshole trying his best to control you.

No one I know would put packet meat into a sandwich when there was left over meat available and I went to private school and have a professional career.

takehomepay · 12/09/2021 20:50

If anything they will think actual meat sandwiches are much healthier/nicer than processed ham/turkey slices.

Lucky dd!

Mrsjayy · 12/09/2021 20:50

Left over chicken is perfect and tbh alot healthier than packaged chickebnand it will taste better too the. School will not judge,. Your ex has really got to you please get him out of your head Flowers

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 12/09/2021 20:50

How much does this Prince of a Man pay in child maintenance?

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/09/2021 20:50

They won't care its leftover chicken in a sandwich.

LynetteScavo · 12/09/2021 20:50

Eh? Where did your ex think processed chicken slices came from? It's made from previously cooked chicken.

The finest sandwich is made with chicken roasted the day (or two) before. (I add Mayo and lettuce for myself, but your DD probably doesn't want that).

PullTheWeeds · 12/09/2021 20:51

I work in a school, if I seen your daughter's lunch box tomorrow I would be thinking 'ooh that looks nice' and I'd be looking at her happily munching it thinking how lovely it is to see the children enjoying their lunch. And if I saw here eating a tuna sandwich I would be thinking ' ooh that looks nice, I wish my children would eat tuna sandwiches'.

jmh740 · 12/09/2021 20:51

I've worked in the dining hall in school noone will have time to notice and if they did they would think its a much better option than processed meats, I think they only thing I've ever thought was a bit odd that someone brought in was a cold nugget happy meal 🤢

FangsForTheMemory · 12/09/2021 20:51

Leftover chicken sandwich is delicious and also just proves you had a nice Sunday dinner too. Your ex has funny values.

gwenneh · 12/09/2021 20:51

How exactly would they discern that it was leftover meat anyway? Maybe you're just extra super motivated and roasted a chicken just to make her lunch! Grin

My DC often pack leftover Sunday lunch to take to school on a Monday. I wouldn't give it another thought.

takehomepay · 12/09/2021 20:51

@mogtheexcellent

Who the fuck voted yabu Hmm

Leftovers are fine. So long as its not pizza or mcdonalds.

Please dont worry about doubting yourself. Its difficult to see clearly after being in an abusive realtionship.

To be fair, the voting is not clear.
toolazytothinkofausername · 12/09/2021 20:51

Your ExH is a complete idiot!

It is fine to put leftover meat in a sandwich for packed lunch, for children and adults :) Also, leftover chicken is lovely in a pasta salad with mayo and sweetcorn.

BashfulClam · 12/09/2021 20:52

I’d much rather send a child with leftover cooked chicken than processed slices. Go for it and play up to your daughter how lovely it will be.

OhWhyNot · 12/09/2021 20:53

They really want care and far better than processed meat

Roast chicken and beef make the best sandwiches

I do this and mix with mayo and sweet corn for ds (personally prefer just chicken)

Crabwoman · 12/09/2021 20:53

I buy a chicken once a week just to roast, shred and have with sandwiches..chicken and salad sandwiches are the finest sandwich there us.

Does your ex have some weird misguided poverty complex?

Cryalot2 · 12/09/2021 20:53

Gosh you are well rid of your ex . Please op don't worry, you could not give any better than fresh left overs .
You are a great mum and never let anyone tell you otherwise.

Dd who is an adult often takes left over dinner for her lunch the next day, as do most.

Insertfunnyname · 12/09/2021 20:54

Leftover real meat much healthier than the processed sandwich meat.

We have a high family income and I’d actually prefer real leftover meat to sandwiched meat. Just saying that to say you don’t look poor (!!!)

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 12/09/2021 20:54

I'd think leftover meat would be viewed as better than sandwich meat? Less processed, less additives and salt etc?

Aubree17 · 12/09/2021 20:54

This is hilarious.

Unfortunately though it shows your ex for the person that he is that he actually has you believing this crap.

No one will know whether it's left over meat or straight out of a packet. And it certainly doesn't matter.

LST · 12/09/2021 20:54

One of mine is having leftover chicken on his tomorrow. The other only eats Jam so....

mindutopia · 12/09/2021 20:54

That sounds lovely for your dd and totally normal. Your ex sounds bonkers. Fwiw, we had a roast today and Dh will be taking the leftovers for lunch for like the next 4 days. We make we’ll over £100k a year and are not at all poor, but we definitely have leftovers for lunch most days because that’s what most people do.

Bouledeneige · 12/09/2021 20:55

Of course its fine. In fact your stupid ex is completely wrong - its a middle class thing to do to use leftovers.
