Leftover meat for sandwiches tomorrow, will school really care?

7yo DD, year 3.

I don’t get paid until tomorrow, have about 40p to my name until then. Won't have time to do a shop before school. I have bread, butter, chocolate, fruit and juice for lunchboxes. The only filling I have is leftover chicken or tuna from the roast I did today.

I usually cook up a big chicken for the two of us and then use the leftovers in curries or for my own sandwiches over the next week.

When I was with ExH he would forbid me from putting leftover meat on sandwiches for DDs lunchbox (she was at Nursery at the time). Said it would make the Nursery (and probably now school) think we’re poor and common. He said it shows we can’t feed our child properly – it was fine to put the sliced sandwich chicken or sandwich ham or cheese, but tuna, leftover meat/poultry or egg where not allowed.

DD happily eats chicken (or pork or beef) sandwiches after school on the days she has a hot lunch, so I don’t see this as any different.

So will school really think badly of me as a parent for putting leftover meat in a sandwich for her? I doubt myself a lot and making lunch box tonight for tomorrow could hear him in my head telling me I was disgusting and setting us up for an investigation by SS (yes ExH was abusive and violent).

As long as she eats them i wouldn't worry. My son use to take dry bread, he now take something totally different but as long as he eats i don't care. My son is autistic so has unusual food choices. Another son of mine doesn't eat at school and hasn't since he was year 5, he eats before and after school then a evening meal. I also don't think the dinner ladies/men have time to look what is in their sarnies.

What! Your ex is bonkers, roast chicken is a luxury sandwich filling and healthier than processed chicken too. So listening to your exes voice in your head!

itsgettingwierd · 12/09/2021 20:42

It's healthier than billy bear ham!

Honestly the school won't care. They certainly won't think badly of you for using fresh meat and not processed crap!

Leftover chicken and salad cream sandwiches are the foods of the gods Grin

jendifer · 12/09/2021 20:43

It’s probably time to get over things like this and just serve the sandwich. No one will care or know.

Sunshineanddaisies2021 · 12/09/2021 20:43

I'm a teacher and if one of my children in class had leftover meat sandwiches I would be thinking I really fancy one now too! It's a great lunch option!

Cameleongirl · 12/09/2021 20:43

Wow, your ex was weird and such a snob! I love cold roast chicken in a sandwich, it’s one of my favorite fillings.

Our entire family had leftover chicken sandwiches last week after a roast, yum.

Whywhenwhat · 12/09/2021 20:43

Leftover meat is a great lunch and far healthier than over processed ham etc. The only time school would care is if you weren't feeding your child.
Your ex is a arsehole and it was just another thing for him to control. You're free to do as you like now, well done for making the break.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 12/09/2021 20:44

School won’t know and if they did, wouldn’t care. I’d rather a roast chicken sandwich to a sandwich filling chicken sandwich.

BeaFlowers · 12/09/2021 20:44

Leftover chicken feeds my kids for the rest of the week for sarnies!

I'm glad he's your Ex!

Verbena87 · 12/09/2021 20:44

I’m a teacher and would assume kids with proper sliced chicken from a roast were probably better looked after than those having that anaemic-looking sliced packet stuff sold for sandwiches.

Notaroadrunner · 12/09/2021 20:44

From now on think about what your ex would say and do the opposite. He sounds like a nut job. Left overs in a lunch box is completely normal.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 12/09/2021 20:44

Your ExH is completely wrong. Leftover meat from a home-cooked roast is much much healthier than processed sliced meat, which will be salty and contain preservatives. You sound like a great mum and you are feeding your children just fine.

greenlynx · 12/09/2021 20:45

Your Ex is ex for a reason. This reason is that he’s idiot. How on earth homemade roast chicken is bad whereas shop bought ham full of salt and additives is good?
I always use meat leftover in DD’s sandwiches or pasta salad. She loves it! She is 17.

TheKeatingFive · 12/09/2021 20:45

Leftover roast meat in a sandwich is absolutely fine and arguably better (less salt etc.) at ham or deli meats

Unquestionably better.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 12/09/2021 20:45

Having home roast meat in your sarnies is common compared to ultra processed ham/chicken? What planet is your ex living in? What a load of twaddle.

Zeal · 12/09/2021 20:45

I can see why he is your ExH. It was always going to be the case wasn't it?

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 12/09/2021 20:46

Leftover sandwiches on a Monday are one of my favourite memories a real treat, we ate well but I just really loved them instead of ham and cheese.

I use left overs all the time for lunch reheated in our food flasks for Dd and myself. Not only that but alot of the teachers in my school bring in leftovers to heat up in the microwave in the winter, so much so they had to buy 2 more microwaves so we could eat by the end of lunch.

Your ex sounds like an abusive twat, well done for getting rid!

CornishTiger · 12/09/2021 20:46

It’s fine!

I’m more concerned how little you have at end of month. Not much room for emergencies. Are you in need of benefit or budgeting advice. Might be worth posting in money section in case there is anything that can be improved.

HTH1 · 12/09/2021 20:46

That is a really odd way of thinking! I deliberately cook roasts for the sandwich leftovers and that would never even have occurred to me. If anything, it’s much nicer (and healthier) than, say, using a packet of cheap ham. Your ex clearly has a weird reverse snobbery issue and, on this one, he’s just wrong.

mogtheexcellent · 12/09/2021 20:46

Who the fuck voted yabu Hmm

Leftovers are fine. So long as its not pizza or mcdonalds.

Please dont worry about doubting yourself. Its difficult to see clearly after being in an abusive realtionship.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/09/2021 20:47

School wont give a hoot.

One of the DC in my kids class brings cold leftover chip shop fish and chips in for their lunch every Monday Sad

CleanQueen123 · 12/09/2021 20:47

Bless you. My mother was once sent to school with a whole roast pigeon in her lunch box Hmm

The school won't even notice leftover roast chicken.

Chunkymenrock · 12/09/2021 20:47

Wtf? Leftover meat from a roast makes the very best sandwiches. Where do people like your ex get these utterly barmy ideas?? Totally cuckoo.

holidaynearlyover · 12/09/2021 20:47

Well your ex is a complete knob/nob (never know the right spelling!). Left over chicken sandwich with left over stuffing is food from the gods!

DontBeAHaterDear · 12/09/2021 20:47

No one at school will notice, much less care. It’s hardly a can of irn bru and a tube of Pringles.
