Leftover meat for sandwiches tomorrow, will school really care?

ChickenSandwichYum · 12/09/2021 20:36

7yo DD, year 3.

I don’t get paid until tomorrow, have about 40p to my name until then. Won't have time to do a shop before school. I have bread, butter, chocolate, fruit and juice for lunchboxes. The only filling I have is leftover chicken or tuna from the roast I did today.

I usually cook up a big chicken for the two of us and then use the leftovers in curries or for my own sandwiches over the next week.

When I was with ExH he would forbid me from putting leftover meat on sandwiches for DDs lunchbox (she was at Nursery at the time). Said it would make the Nursery (and probably now school) think we’re poor and common. He said it shows we can’t feed our child properly – it was fine to put the sliced sandwich chicken or sandwich ham or cheese, but tuna, leftover meat/poultry or egg where not allowed.

DD happily eats chicken (or pork or beef) sandwiches after school on the days she has a hot lunch, so I don’t see this as any different.

So will school really think badly of me as a parent for putting leftover meat in a sandwich for her? I doubt myself a lot and making lunch box tonight for tomorrow could hear him in my head telling me I was disgusting and setting us up for an investigation by SS (yes ExH was abusive and violent).

Left over meat is fine!!

I would love to know what he thinks is wrong with tuna Confused

suredsun · 12/09/2021 21:12

It sounds a lot posher than cheap ham to me!!

Ninkanink · 12/09/2021 21:13

They absolutely won’t!

Freshly cooked unprocessed meat is way better for your daughter.

I do this as a matter of course, we use all leftovers.

Your ex is an idiot.

VodselForDinner · 12/09/2021 21:13

Your ex lied to control and demean you.

User112 · 12/09/2021 21:15

Left over meat is perfectly fine for lunch, add a fruit if you can.

TheKeatingFive · 12/09/2021 21:15

Thinking that SS would investigate you off the back of roast chicken sandwiches puts your ex in the running for dumbest person on the planet.

Seriously.

And slightly off topic but wtf did he think was wrong with tuna?

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 12/09/2021 21:16

We definitely aren't poor, possibly common, but really not that common. We certainly are not common enough to put processed meats in our sandwich (except maybe a premium ham). Leftovers from a home cooked meal is real class.

RubySlippers123 · 12/09/2021 21:17

Eh? Leftover meat is great!

RubySlippers123 · 12/09/2021 21:17

@AgnesNaismith

You poor thing Flowers

Leftovers are a sign that you cooked your daughter a lovely meal today and that you put some thought into her lunchbox.

This.

That's absolutely ridiculous and I'd say the opposite is probably true. It would more likely be some sort of middle class signifier to have freshly made, unprocessed, home cooked sandwich fillings.

Besides which, he's your ex. Why the hell do you care what he thinks? It all you've got in the house and it's a perfectly acceptable healthy lunch. And it's that or she goes hungry.

Pixxie7 · 12/09/2021 21:18

He is a prat I am sure they will enjoy them.

ChickenSandwichYum · 12/09/2021 21:19

Chicken sandwich, fruit (she'll pick in the morning, i have apples, oranges, bananas or grapes), penguin bar, and a carton of apple juice. Usually she'd have cheese for morning playtime too but I don't have any so she'll have to put up with either taking an extra piece of fruit or manage without for 1 day.

Leftover chicken is lush!

sarahc336 · 12/09/2021 21:20

I think that sounds a lovely lunch box for your dd, left over meat will be very tasty, your ex sounds like he had many issues 🤣

Redwinestillfine · 12/09/2021 21:20

Leftover meat is far superior to sliced supermarket stuff! I have never heard anything negative about using it as sandwich meat. I think he made it up op!

Firsttimecatlady · 12/09/2021 21:21

I’d put money on the fact that he didn’t believe that, and it was just a way to control, demean and frighten you. I’m so so sorry you’ve been through this, and SO happy you’ve escaped.
You sound like an excellent mother, and like you’re doing your absolute best to build back a good life for you and your daughter.
(And please don’t ever feel the need to justify to strangers on the internet about your financial situation, especially when it’s off topic / not been asked for. You’re providing, and I’m sure doing your best. Many of us have been where you are. Keep going :)

grafittiartist · 12/09/2021 21:22

Isn't there a friends episode about a leftovers sandwich?
Why would anyone throw away cooked meat?
Enjoy the sandwiches :)

Isahlo · 12/09/2021 21:22

Your ex husband is weird as fuck. My parents are on a six figure salary and them and my siblings at home will all be taking leftover roast beef sandwiches in crusty rolls that mum and I got for 4p each when Tesco shut this arvo. When they take their packed lunches tomorrow I’m sure no one will even look what they take.
Also Tuna and cucumber on brown rolls has always been our family fave sandwich of all time.

Why on earth would school care..
you’re just sending normal food

Livpool · 12/09/2021 21:22

Leftover meat from a roast always seems like a treat to me. Much better than any bought sandwich filling

cookingisoverrated · 12/09/2021 21:22

Glad he's your ex, because he's clearly got his head up his arse.

Mammyloveswine · 12/09/2021 21:23

Wtf?! Tuna..leftover meat.. egg.. all perfectly fine sandwich fillings!!

Unacceptable lunches.. a whole Swiss roll.. pot noodle.. leftover takeaway kebab or pizza...

Your ex sounds like an abusive twat!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/09/2021 21:23

People would think you were poor for giving your child freshly cooked meat, rather than a £1.99 packet of not freshly cooked meat? That you were poor because you had enough money to buy higher quality protein sources for your child to the extent that there was enough left for another meal? That your child is properly fed with meat and vegetables on a Sunday, rather than some Basics jam on Basics bread toast?

He really was hard of thinking, wasn't he?

Jossse · 12/09/2021 21:24

Left over meat is THE best and healthiest sandwich filling. Pre sliced meat is nowhere near as good as it has preservatives in it.
Poor you having such an idiot of an exH telling you absolute rubbish.
Kids need home cooked food it's the best.

Chewbecca · 12/09/2021 21:24

Blimey, leftover chicken is an excellent and nutritious sandwich filling and is absolutely delicious. Your daughter will ask for it every week now.

Glad to hear the ex is an ex.

GeorgiaMcGraw · 12/09/2021 21:24

So if you cooked a lovely roast on a Sunday, he would expect you to throw away everything you didn't eat by Sunday evening? I can't get my head around the idea that using a joint/chicken for more than one meal is anything but normal (unless you have a large and ravenous family who polish it off, in which case, fair enough). Your kid's lunch sounds great. Your ex is insane and really quite horrible.
