Is identifying as an age really a thing now?

My friend works as a lecturer in a collage. There have been quite a few different identities, but at least two have identified as different age groups - a woman in her 40 identified as a 2 year old and another has 'several' identities, man and woman, ages 2-30.

I'd like to say I'm making it up, but I'm not. And I'm really not sure if it's supposed to be ironic or deadly serious. It must be ironic, right?

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 09/09/2021 15:29

I hope it is serious

It will make people rethink the trans issue

Lweji · 09/09/2021 15:30

I suspect it's both. Grin

Rummikub · 09/09/2021 15:30

I can’t decide if I am 80 or 25

Justcallmebebes · 09/09/2021 15:30

I think it's absolutely brilliant and I'm immediately identifying as a 35 year old.

You've made my day. Thanks 😊😊

FionnulaTheCooler · 09/09/2021 15:31

If she identifies as a 2 year old then surely the college should suggest that a creche would be a more appropriate setting for her education?

FangsForTheMemory · 09/09/2021 15:31

@MarleneDietrichsSmile What do you mean? It’s got nothing to do with trans people.

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 09/09/2021 15:32

I did think that. And honestly with college kids I could really see it as a new way to push boundaries and be 'edgy' (though not sure about the 40 year old woman in this scenario).

But is age a 'forbidden' boundary like race, or are we just going to start accepting fully grown adults in children's spaces? Or the reverse - 13 year olds at bars?

I suspect she's going for youngest person to ever get their A Levels. Wink

About an hour ago I identified as unfit 80 year old (not saying all are unfit!!! Obviously) trying to run up stairs when I hear teams ringtone. Now I am identifying as a 5 year old having a proper moody fit (over a work issue) and just doing "but I don't wannnna" when offline.

Yeah. It works.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 09/09/2021 15:34

Kind of want a lollipop. Feel like it would make things better

Tomatobear · 09/09/2021 15:34

Wow that's mental! How far is this going to go?! I'm definitely identifying as a billionaire soon Grin

Mintjulia · 09/09/2021 15:35

I have an awful image now of a 40yo woman going to work in a nappy and sleep suit.Confused

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 09/09/2021 15:35

Oh, fabulous. I'm going to identify as a fourteen-year-old and make my sleazy old friend's dreams come true. Not.

I'm in my sixties and went out yesterday in a miniskirt and slogan tee. I'm probably already identifying as a teenager.

@MarleneDietrichsSmile I understand and I agree.

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 09/09/2021 15:36

There's also been one who has identified as an animal, and another a god, but not sure if they are quite as shocking?

OP posts:
KingsleyShacklebolt · 09/09/2021 15:36

I'm identifying as a member of the Royal Family on a Monday and Tuesday, on Wednesday I think I might identify as an Olympic athlete, and at weekends I am identifying as a food critic to get free meals at top restaurants. Hmm

What a load of utter bollocks.

It does actually, because it's part of the same bullshit self ID agenda. You can no more decide you must be treated as 2 year old than you can be only seen as your opposite sex. You can decide that's how you feel, you do not get to force me to accept that's reality

Urgh, just imagining that reality show I saw a few years ago about those men who have fetishes to be babies and have a 'mummy' looking after them. Fully nappied up and then spanked Envy

Age is a protected characteristic under the 2010 Equality Act.

Is it lecturers or students doing this? Either way they need to be advised to read up on the Equality Act, and also to think about why we have safeguarding to protect children (defined by age) from adults.

Unless they're being ironic to point out the logistical flaws in identifying as something you're not...

Lweji · 09/09/2021 15:38

It's tempting for me to identify as a 70 year old and demand to be allowed to retire.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 09/09/2021 15:38

Well with the well known fact about how gods don't really manage to keep it in their robes, he could well be some kind of demi god.🤔

It's the students. Obviously my friend has not told me the general age of most of them (other than the 40 year old woman) but I suspect they are mostly children between 16-17 for college students.

You have a point. Actually wasn't Loki supposedly identifying all over the place as man, woman, god or animal depending on his interests?

I identify as a 67 year old.

Can I get my pension now please?

KingsleyShacklebolt · 09/09/2021 15:43

Age is a protected characteristic under the 2010 Equality Act.

So is sex but that doesn't really seem to matter any more.

Bancha · 09/09/2021 15:44

I have so many questions. Does the 40/2 year old have tantrums and wear a nappy? Does she act like a 2 year old? Does she expect to be treated like a 2 year old? Does she do college work? If so, how does that fit with her identity. I am fascinated and baffled and horrified.
