Is identifying as an age really a thing now?

My friend works as a lecturer in a collage. There have been quite a few different identities, but at least two have identified as different age groups - a woman in her 40 identified as a 2 year old and another has 'several' identities, man and woman, ages 2-30.

I'd like to say I'm making it up, but I'm not. And I'm really not sure if it's supposed to be ironic or deadly serious. It must be ironic, right?

Is it just my impression or do some young people nowadays seem to be having trouble accepting who they are?

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 09/09/2021 16:15

I identify as Paula Radcliffe and will be able to run a 10k in 30 minutes in future.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/09/2021 16:15

I looked great at 23, if I identify as 23 my waist reappear? Thought not.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/09/2021 16:16

Yup, of course.

nauticant · 09/09/2021 16:16

But ultimately it doesn't matter what you believe - this is reality. Sorry to break that to you.

Reading this brought a little joy to my day.

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 09/09/2021 16:17

I suppose age can be seem as a bit of joke (which is still why I'm suspecting it is being ironic or just more attention seeking rather than serious) because it's not legal to change right now.

God - well that doesn't surprise me actually. I remember Myspace and loads of people had those types of 'titles' (though not identities) at that kind of age. It's not much different.

The animal is a bit odder, but if it's something 'cool' I can again sort of see it. It's all conflating their own view of their personality with what they see represents them (remember those facebook quizzes - what colour are you, what kind of animal are you, etc).

Age IS odd though. Why anyone would choose to identify as a toddler to go to a college with mostly 16-18 year olds IS strange. Don't most 16 year olds want to be 18 so they can legally do things?

If I identify as 66 can I retire now please?

Cookingbynumbers · 09/09/2021 16:18

Do the kids think they’re being clever and edgy doing this? It baffles me.
Like when I was a teen and on college forms where is said ‘sex’ crossing out the options and writing ‘yes please’.
I agree with the pp who said it’s attention seeking. Will reasonable adjustments be needed to accommodate these babies/animals/gods?
Madness.

adeleh · 09/09/2021 16:19

@EverybodyIsInteresting

I identify as a 67 year old.

Can I get my pension now please?

Ah, sorry - see you got there first - AND that it's going to take a year longer to get my pension than I thought. Bugger.
GreyhoundG1rl · 09/09/2021 16:21

Why are colleges allowing someone who claims to be two access to their courses? Would they be allowed into a preschool? Hmm
So fucked up.

GreyhoundG1rl · 09/09/2021 16:22

@KittenKong

Didn’t a man in... Belgium (?) try to get his age ‘adjusted’ on a dating app because he didn’t identify as his age (but much younger). I’m sure it went to court - and he lost (because it’s bonkers).
Bet that had the potential suitors queuing round the block 🤣🤣🤣 Poor gobshite.
StoneofDestiny · 09/09/2021 16:22

If I identify as 13 can I stop paying tax?

Can't people just look in the mirror to confirm who and what they are?

Tanith · 09/09/2021 16:23

It’s been a thing for quite a while. Haven’t you met Stefonknee Wolscht yet?!

How is this actually manifesting, OP? As in, are people putting in their email sign-off 'please treat me as a 3-year-old' or whatever? Or is it more like those quizzes where you answer multiple-choice questions and it tells you if you're Marlene Dietrich or Bettie Page?

I didn't see this post but just wrote something similar about those quizzes. As far as I know it's part of their applications (please state your 'identity') and the meet and greet. I presume they are welcome to put it in their email signatures but beyond that, I can't see what the goal is.

I supposes it's likely that it is a bit of a joke and one-upmanship: "Jean identifies as x so I'm going to go one better and be Y".

I know at least one of the ages and the animal was in the application stage. Take that as you will.

I'm identifying as 66, then I can collect my state pension and free bus pass.

ACreakingGateNeverStops · 09/09/2021 16:26

Sounds marvellous, I will immediately start identifying as 95 year old and expect my family to do all the cooking and cleaning I usually do :)

frazzledasarock · 09/09/2021 16:27

I identify as in my 70’s I want my pension

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 09/09/2021 16:27

If transwomen can demand smears etc maybe I'll identify as 67 and demand my state pension 13 years early. I'm all for it.

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 09/09/2021 16:28

Cross post. Many of us obviously have the same idea Grin

Gimlisaxe · 09/09/2021 16:28

I have been identifying as 24 years old, for a good 15 years now. My body this morning getting out of bed seemed to be identifying as a 102 year old.

What’s the latest on that one? There were some pretty unsavoury things going on with the ‘adoptive parents’ (both of them) so lord alone knows why social services weren’t called in over their daughter who was still a child when this happened.

PronounssheRa · 09/09/2021 16:29

@Mintjulia

I have an awful image now of a 40yo woman going to work in a nappy and sleep suit.Confused
Stefonknee Wolscht, identifies as a six year old girl.
AnneLovesGilbert · 09/09/2021 16:29

I support them. We can all either ignore reality and self ID as whatever we like or not. It seems we’re in the process of doing the former so identifying as a different age or ethnicity, species or disabled or able bodied are as worthy of respect and understanding as people expecting to be seen as a different sex.
