@Libraryghost

I tell you what is amazing. A Frey Bentos steak pie with tinned potatoes and gravy. If you want to be healthy you can add tinned veg.
Tinned veg for a bit of nutrition lol

Because they are a little bland, they can be a good foil for oily fish like tinned tuna or smoked mackerel so I sometimes make a salad with fish, tinned potatoes, finely sliced celery, diced eating apple, and crisp lettuce, with black grapes or raisins and halved walnuts as a garnish.
Mix together with a creamy or mayonnaise dressing and some horseradish sauce, serve with rustic brown bread on the side.

I love them, but was always told they were horrible. I keep a few tins the back of the pantry, just for me.

Libraryghost · 08/09/2021 22:22

@Firstdateshotel I was being facetious! Lol! You can add tinned peaches for afters for further nutrition. I am all for a balanced diet.

me4real · 08/09/2021 22:25

@Firstdateshotel Tinned veg has the same nutrition as other veg.

idontlikealdi · 08/09/2021 22:25

You can't make a massamum curry without them

whataboutbob · 08/09/2021 22:29

Fine if you’re planning a polar expedition. Otherwise I’d steer well clear. They won’t have the same nutritional value as fresh due to the very high heat used in the canning process.

mynameisbrian · 08/09/2021 22:34

tinned potatos is a no from me but frozen chopped onions and garlic is a life changer for me

notacooldad · 08/09/2021 22:35

Tinned potatoes, large crystal salt, lemon and coriander.
If I have it in I add grilled halloumi.

berryhead2013 · 08/09/2021 22:36

I love them but they don't mash very nicely 🥴

holidaynearlyover · 08/09/2021 22:41

@Martinisarebetterdirty

I love them - sliced and fried in butter. Also love M&S chicken in white sauce, served with rice and frozen peas, smothered in soy sauce - a lovely quick and easy meal.
@Martinisarebetterdirty that's exactly how I used to eat it as a child! The soy makes it!
DrCoconut · 08/09/2021 22:49

They are fantastic in the right context. Like fried with onions and peppers.

DroopyClematis · 08/09/2021 22:49

@whynotwhatknot

Reminds me of my grandad always had lots of tins could still cook quite well with fresh ingredients aswell

someone mentioned gnochhi anyone know wher ei can get some thats filled ?

got some nice cheese ones in lidl once but theyve disappeared

Sainsbury's had filled gnocci the other day, quite a few actually. They were on the end of an aisle with 'forrin' food.

Hell yes!!!
FangsForTheMemory · 08/09/2021 22:52

I love them for potato salad - you need to let them steep in vinegar for an hour or so.

TheDogsMother · 08/09/2021 22:55

I haven't read the thread so apologies if this has already been mentioned. Nadia Husasain made a fantastic Bombay Potatoes recipe with tinned ones.

Inthesameboatatmo · 08/09/2021 23:03

I loved the cream in the tin ,was it called tip top ? Or something like that.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/09/2021 23:08

For some reason my DC loved them and called them Punky Potatoes.
I usually cut them into slices and made a fried potato cake with onions.

Haven’t had them for years.

DogsandCatsB4u · 08/09/2021 23:49

Never tried it

NoLeafClover · 09/09/2021 01:28

@SoloISland, I'm also Irish. They actually stock tinned potatoes in my local Tesco. I've been tempted to try them after reading on here previously that they're lovely fried. However I fear my dear departed Nan would fucking haunt me for such egregious behaviour Grin. I once told her about ready made microwavable mash and she was Not Impressed Grin

justthecat · 09/09/2021 05:42

I have the tinned cream in my cupboard 😬

liveforsummer · 09/09/2021 06:12

I tried roasting them in the oven and despite the fact I'd pricked them they all exploded like tiny grenades. It was quite scary 😆

That's a slightly different thing. At least I think we are all talking about the same thing.

Tiptop was a bit more like evaporated milk. This is thicker and as someone else said it had a slightly metalic taste. I know that's not exactly selling it, but it was a taste of my childhood.

I'll find a link when I'm up and about. Not sure how to do links on my phone.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 09/09/2021 07:36

@Spaceprincess

Yes in curry and roasted. We have them camping with onions and corned beef or sausages all fried together. They make excellent bombay potatoes too. We also had tinned chicken supreme, think my mum served it with a circle of rice.
Mine did too, it was powdered stuff in a big bag from the cash and carry, all reconstituted chicken cooked and sat in a ring of rice, but for some reason tasted awesome. Camping was always westlers hamburgers from a big tin that mum opened top and bottom and pushed them through, they had discs of paper in between them, we liked them but god knows what was in them.
HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/09/2021 07:51

Oh they are yum! They don't necessarily actually taste like potato but they are glorious anyway.

Tinned carrots are the absolute best type of carrots. There was a shortage a couple of years ago, I was bereft. I didn't want stupid fresh carrots, ugh!
