Not for me. They taste funny.

And I think of that scene in Saxondale and want to cry for times gone.

MintyCedric · 08/09/2021 21:44

I wouldn't eat them on there on but they're great sautéed, turned into patatas bravas, in tortilla, curries and casseroles.

barskits · 08/09/2021 21:45

@Prokupatuscrakedatus

So instead of buying potatoes and preparing them, you take a detour via the food processing and packaging industries?
Yes, just like we do with all other canned food. Often used for long-term storage of a perishable foodstuff, because when there's a seasonal glut, we can't eat it all at once.

The can is recyclable, unlike much plastic packaging you get with fresh veg. I haven't seen loose new potatoes in a shop for years.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

TrevorWithTheWeather · 08/09/2021 21:46

Chopped and fried to within an inch of their lives 😋😋

NewlyGranny · 08/09/2021 21:48

DH used to buy these and put them in a curry. Not had them this many a long year. They used to be 15p for a big tin in Lidl.

I absolutely LOVE chicken in white sauce. If you have not tried it in an omelette, you have not lived (you do need to heat up before filling the omelette).

HocusPocuss · 08/09/2021 21:58

I make delicious Bombay potatoes with them. It get the cheap cans, 30p each, and use about 4 of them. Fry them whole in ghee until golden, take them out, add all the spices and put them back in. I always make them for my parents when we have them over for dinner and they love them. I also use them to make a loaded potato salad with bacon and chives and it’s amazing!

whynotwhatknot · 08/09/2021 22:01

Reminds me of my grandad always had lots of tins could still cook quite well with fresh ingredients aswell

someone mentioned gnochhi anyone know wher ei can get some thats filled ?

got some nice cheese ones in lidl once but theyve disappeared

noblegreenk · 08/09/2021 22:02

Love tinned potatoes and I can be a terrible food snob but they're a guilty pleasure of mine. I usually roast them with a drizzle of olive oil, bashed garlic cloves and herbs - dill is particularly good.

saraclara · 08/09/2021 22:03

Supermarket pastry case, tin of chicken in white sauce poured into it, shove in the oven for a bit. Family meal sorted.

I miss those days Sad

me4real · 08/09/2021 22:03

I woldn't say they're delicious at all, but they can be convenient maybe.

I use them mainly just for bombay potatoes, or in a curry perhaps.

lillylemons · 08/09/2021 22:06

I used to work in a cafe that used to use tin potatoes for roast potatoes.

Obimumkinobi · 08/09/2021 22:07

I have lovely memories of my Aunty deep frying them in an old school chip pan. Tasty!

saraclara · 08/09/2021 22:07

@sluj

I've just seen your can get 12 tins of cream for less than £10 on Amazon. I'm very tempted but what if its not as nice as I remember??
OMG!

And also it says that it has half the fat of fresh cream. So THAT'S why it doesn't feel as fatty and claggy, despite being so thick!

Neither of my supermarkets sell it, so I assumed it didn't exist any more.

I used the tinned steak in gravy to make pies Blush.

Makes a brilliant camping meal too either turned into a stew or chilli.

Hankunamatata · 08/09/2021 22:07

@KhoshkaKatya

One of favourite. Love them sliced and fried in butter. Brilliant with halloumi and red peppers for a weekend brunch.
ooow I usually boil my own potatoes to fry, this is much better idea
Walkingalot · 08/09/2021 22:09

They have their place. puts on shopping list as I've remember how handy/versatile they are.

Firstdateshotel · 08/09/2021 22:13

I have visions of fried tinned potatoes with corned beef and that it tastes amazing.

I am, but this is MN and I can own the best hash in the world which I'm not allowed to in RL as my entire family is ashamed to admit they can each eat 3x600g tins of potatoes in various guises while camping. - Put them in a row on skewers, dab dry then brush with garlic olive oil before barbecuing until crispy. Best bbq side ever.
Libraryghost · 08/09/2021 22:13

In the 1970s my Nan used to make me a meal of tinned salmon, tinned peas and potatoes with parsley sauce (out of a packet). Bloody brilliant. Loved it!!

bicarbonateofcherrysoda · 08/09/2021 22:15

I love them. Even the dead cheap ones are nice. You can bung them in anything.

Tinned carrots though... Nope.

Libraryghost · 08/09/2021 22:16

I tell you what is amazing. A Frey Bentos steak pie with tinned potatoes and gravy. If you want to be healthy you can add tinned veg.

SusieSusieSoo · 08/09/2021 22:16

At my slimming world group they are known as caravan potatoes. We used to have them in our caravan too!
