Who gets the boots?

About 5 years ago I bought dd2 a pair of long riding boots. She wore them for a couple of years then gave up riding. Dd3 started wearing the boots. She's worn them almost every day for three years. Along with me, she does all the looking after of our two horses. The boots are falling apart, cracked, one has a hole in. But they are "the most comfortable boots in the world" apparently.

Dd2 has a gap year job in a school that has horses. At interview they mentioned she might be able to ride out with the little ones. Dd2 wants to take The Boots, saying they were bought for her originally so they are her boots
Dd3 is livid as she wears The Boots everyday and feels that as she does all the horse stuff at home, she should get The Boots

Neither want a new pair of boots

Help me solve this ridiculous dilemma as both of my normally kind sensible dds have become fixated on the Boots.

YANBU - DD2 TAKES THE BOOTS TO HER GAP YEAR JOB
YABU - DD3 KEEPS THE BOOTS TO WEAR AT HOME EVERYDAY

@GreyEyedWitch

Did DD2 say that DD3 could use her boots when she gave up riding? I wouldn't be pleased if my sister just helped themselves to my boots without asking my permission. I don't really understand why the majority think that DD3 should get them, as if she has 'squatters rights' over the boots.
The op says that with 4 dc all horse gear is shared around/ passed down.

You can really spot the non-horsey types suggesting that the ‘old’ boots are thrown away! 😱

These are butter-soft, worn in, comfortable as fuck, soles so perfect ly worn out you can feel the stirrup iron, (admittedly with holes that are crap for winter turning out) Ariats. They make legs look long, they make one look so fucking horsey it’s unreal, one cannot simply throw them away.

Make sure your second daughter doesn’t nick ‘em tonight, OP.

DD3 gets the boots.

Soubriquet · 31/08/2021 16:30

They are now dd3’s boots

Buy dd2 new ones even if she doesn’t want them

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 17:00

Thought you might like to see them so you can see what we are dealing with!

I have persuaded dd2 to take a much nicer pair of short boots and chaps
I have said if she ends up doing lots of riding I will buy her a new pair
We went out for lunch and went to a couple of shops to buy some smart trousers and all her shampoo etc.

Dd3 is delighted

Thank you all

I really want new boots now.

Autumn is coming. I want to stride through puddles with a Labrador

Glad it has been resolved! Thanks for this thread OP. For some reason it's like the MN of old and I've enjoyed it!

They look pretty worn to me, I still say get DD3 new boots she won't be long wearing them in and they'll at least fit her feet.

If you buy DD2 new boots, DD3 will end up acquiring them again and still need to break in nearly new boots.

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 17:04

Thank you, yes it's been really quite fun and I know it seems a stupid dilemma but I was really stuck over it!! Lots of nice posts and I don't think the word entitled was used once
