Who gets the boots?

162 replies

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 07:30

About 5 years ago I bought dd2 a pair of long riding boots. She wore them for a couple of years then gave up riding. Dd3 started wearing the boots. She's worn them almost every day for three years. Along with me, she does all the looking after of our two horses. The boots are falling apart, cracked, one has a hole in. But they are "the most comfortable boots in the world" apparently.

Dd2 has a gap year job in a school that has horses. At interview they mentioned she might be able to ride out with the little ones. Dd2 wants to take The Boots, saying they were bought for her originally so they are her boots
Dd3 is livid as she wears The Boots everyday and feels that as she does all the horse stuff at home, she should get The Boots

Neither want a new pair of boots

Help me solve this ridiculous dilemma as both of my normally kind sensible dds have become fixated on the Boots.

YANBU - DD2 TAKES THE BOOTS TO HER GAP YEAR JOB
YABU - DD3 KEEPS THE BOOTS TO WEAR AT HOME EVERYDAY

@Crabbitcrab

Did she give the boots to her sister or did dd3 just take them? If she gave them away then dd3 keeps them but if dd3 just took them she has to give them back
I would imagine they sat for a while in the boot cupboard going spidery then I fished them out and gave them to Dd3

@Pashazade

I think the original boots definitely belong to DD3. I would point out to DD2 that she is aiming to make things difficult for you and her sister by demanding the boots on the off chance that she might get to ride and she hasn't even been in the job a week. Just say no and if it looks like she's going to ride occasionally then help out with a pair of boots that won't break the bank. If she'd done anything with the horses in the last few years I'd possibly consider otherwise but they obviously aren't a priority for her just a nice perk so she doesn't get to dictate! Good luck!
Thank you! She is lovely and helps a lot around the house but hasn't been near the horses in years so I'm definitely starting to agree with you

They're DD3s boots now, but you have to buy DD2 new ones if she needs them for the job.

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 07:53

Also before all this blew up Dd3 did used to sigh happily as she put on The Boots saying how she would still wear them even if they got holes all over.

Ariat - you certainly make desirable riding boots!

I have offered her short riding boots and chaps (gaiter type things you wear over your jodhpurs) but she's having none of it

OP really doesn't need to buy new ones. There are other boots DD2 could take. Buying new boots would be a waste of money, as she might not even get a chance to ride.
AttaGirrrrl · 31/08/2021 07:55

I knew they were going to be Ariats Grin

Is that the problem? Does DD2 want the branded boots and the alternative are not?

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 31/08/2021 07:56

Ayyy. This is priceless OP. Let her keep the boots Smile. DD3 will be out of the way anyway so you won't have to witness her whingeing!

FreeBritnee · 31/08/2021 07:56

If DD3 has been wearing them daily for years then they’ll be moulded for her foot/leg shape now. They are hers. If they are leather they can be mended by the way.

leavesthataregreen · 31/08/2021 07:57

@MyOtherProfile

Give them one each Grin
brilliant. Telll DD2 they are not fit for purpose if they have holes in them and she must have new boots for work.

Yes probably

I am most definitely not buying dd2 a new pair of ariats

And to make matters worse there's a neoprene lined pair of ariats in the cupboard thst Dd1 won in a competition that NONE of them like!!

I mean, if the neoprene lined pair are causing you a problem, I will happily offer them a loving new home.

I might force my own huge feet into them. Also I haven't given up hope that one day one of them wi ll decide they are worth having

Dd2 has a job, therefore if she decides she needs some boots, being 18 and all, earning money, she can sort out her own dam boots and stop expecting life to continue as normal like when she was a child.
Dd3 gets the boots, she’s earned them.

NoddingTulip · 31/08/2021 08:01

I would say that they now belong to dd3, but as they are already cracked and have a hole in they will need replacing at some point soon anyway, especially with winter coming up. In that case I'd try persuade dd3 to give them back to dd2 as she likely won't wear them much anyway and will probably last her the year she needs them for. If dd2 is wearing her boots everyday it won't take long to wear in a new pair.

londonrach · 31/08/2021 08:02

They dd3 boots now. Simple

SwanShaped · 31/08/2021 08:03

Defo DD3. But for your other daughter, is there something about wanting the right gear when she’s working? Is it about the brand/comfort/familiarity?

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 31/08/2021 08:04

Give Dd1 the money for new boots, she can decide whether to spend it on new expensive riding boots, or as my Dd would do buy some cheap ones and pocket the rest of the money. That way you have reimbursed her for a lost gift, she gets to make her own choice and they can be delivered to her work place and a decision doesn't have to be made today.

Di11y · 31/08/2021 08:04

If dd2 is only likely to ride occasionally give her the short ones. The Boots won't be comfy for her and languish unless there's a hack.

Wendsleydale · 31/08/2021 08:04

Ah old Ariats... yes the best boots ever.

Di11y · 31/08/2021 08:04

Sell the neoprene ones towards another pair of the fancy ones??

SwanShaped · 31/08/2021 08:04

How about selling the other boots to make some money to buy new ones?

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 08:07

@SwanShaped

How about selling the other boots to make some money to buy new ones?
Because Dd1 occasionally rides and will wear them. Granted, it's now about 5 times a year, but if she didn't have them and decided to ride I'd have to buy ANOTHER PAIR
OP posts:
Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 08:09

I don't mind taking dd2 to the local farm shop and buying her a pair of cheap (ish!) long boots If she's going to be doing lots of riding but we don't know if that's the case yet!
