Who gets the boots?

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 07:30

About 5 years ago I bought dd2 a pair of long riding boots. She wore them for a couple of years then gave up riding. Dd3 started wearing the boots. She's worn them almost every day for three years. Along with me, she does all the looking after of our two horses. The boots are falling apart, cracked, one has a hole in. But they are "the most comfortable boots in the world" apparently.

Dd2 has a gap year job in a school that has horses. At interview they mentioned she might be able to ride out with the little ones. Dd2 wants to take The Boots, saying they were bought for her originally so they are her boots
Dd3 is livid as she wears The Boots everyday and feels that as she does all the horse stuff at home, she should get The Boots

Neither want a new pair of boots

Help me solve this ridiculous dilemma as both of my normally kind sensible dds have become fixated on the Boots.

YANBU - DD2 TAKES THE BOOTS TO HER GAP YEAR JOB
YABU - DD3 KEEPS THE BOOTS TO WEAR AT HOME EVERYDAY

Plenty of reasonably priced riding boots around OP. Just get another pair.

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 08:12

@Wendsleydale

Are they Windermeres?
No, ironically dd2 HAS a pair of windermeres that she wears as wellies but can't ride in as they are too chunky

They are bromonts

Well the cheapest ones near us are still the best part of 90 quid and I've already bought dd2 some new clothes and shoes for her job

@Bootdilemma

I don't mind taking dd2 to the local farm shop and buying her a pair of cheap (ish!) long boots If she's going to be doing lots of riding but we don't know if that's the case yet!
I think that's more than reasonable. She can go with the short boots, and if the riding is going to be a regular occurrence then you can look at buying a longer pair. There's no point buying them before she goes, as there's a chance she won't ride at all, so it would be a complete waste of money.
Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 08:16

She's adamant she doesn't want the short boots which is bloody annoying, I think she thinks they are babyish Hmm

Honestly, I bought myself a pair of short boots off my friend, they used to belong to her ds and I gave her a tenner for them

Maybe I'll buy MYSELF a nice pair of riding boots

OP posts:
Nomorefuckstogive · 31/08/2021 08:17

They were bought for DD2, therefore they belong to her. No question.

PeskyRooks · 31/08/2021 08:19

If I was dd3 I would be wearing the boots until dd2 has gone, I would sleep in them!

Why can't she take the neoprene wrists then?

Honestly OP your DD sounds a bit spoiled or a bit mean - you've offered short boots, she has neoprene ariats, but no she'll only accept boots her sister has used daily for years or a new pair of ariats.

Why does she want to turn up to work in a holey old pair anyway?

Whinge · 31/08/2021 08:22

She's being ridculous, there's a good chance she won't even get to ride and she's making all this fuss. If the short boots are no good then she can buy her own.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 31/08/2021 08:29

I think you should buy DD2 new boots even though she is being incredibly bratty. Maybe a conversation about how DD3 has earned the boots by working with your horses every day while she lost interest is in order too.

@BareVanilla

I had a similar issue with cream jacket that I bought, I loved it but didn’t wear it as really it wasn’t the fashion or a good style for me. My young Aunt went into my wardrobe and borrowed it saying I never wear it. In the end I let her have it but when I track the reason for not having an adult relationship with her now it started with the jacket. I need therapy 🤣
That is so funny.

She was your first CF😂

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 08:39

The neoprene ones belong to Dd1 and she wants them here in case she wants to ride. Ds1 also has a pair but they are size 11

Obviously dd3. No question.

Bootdilemma · 31/08/2021 08:43

@BareVanilla that is funny. I can tell this is going to be a similar situation

Why would dd2 want to wear ‘as described’ boots to a workplace other than pure spite ?!!

These are dd3 boots.

Also - they both need new boots Grin

Insertfunnyname · 31/08/2021 08:48

They’re DD3s boots

I have offered to buy Dd3 new everyday boots for approximately 18 months but she is adamant that she will only wear The Boots

She has a nice pair for competing in but doesn't like them much

Yes, I have about 12 pairs of riding boots which makes it even more annoying that these knackered ones are the holy grail of boots

ThePlumVan · 31/08/2021 08:50

Offer to split each boot in half to divide equally between the sisters.

The one who gives them up rather than have them wrecked is the one who really loves the boots and gets to keep them.

How is this even an AIBU?
There’s no question here, your 18yo is being an total dick and needs to grow up.
By even entertaining the idea of a question, you’re not helping her to do that.
You should have laughed at the very idea!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 31/08/2021 08:53

It’s not St Ethelburghs is it.

I'd say sorry she doesn't take boots with holes in to a job like that. Short ones till she knows for certain new long ones will get worn.

I say this having a daughter who was feeling guilty at money being spent on her before going overseas to a gap year at a similar sounding school. Mind you nothing non essential went due to weight limits and she wore her walking boots on the plane to save weight. I told her the new case and pack I got her will probably be the last luggage I purchase for her 😁 Poor girl is now in lockdown again but with different company and new places to walk!

whosaidtha · 31/08/2021 08:55

DD2 needs new boots. What kind of impression does it set at her job to wear boots with holes in? Get her to contribute from her first pay or look on eBay for some good quality second hand.
