Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

@GoldenOmber

plus, I don’t think Jo Brand’s defence was “I don’t actually dislike Nigel Farage.”
What Jo Brand said about Nigel Farage was vile and disgusting. But because she's a right-on, leftie comedian, and HE is a right of centre politician, Jo was revered for it and cheered on, and celebrated by the 'woke.'

Yet when Boris Johnson says the 'wrong thing' he is lambasted. Typical hypocrisy of the far left.

rumpelrumpel · 27/08/2021 20:27

Yes- why oh why is misogyny perfectly acceptable and tolerated yet making jokes aimed at ANY other group is not?

I’d be interested to know if this is the case in the rest of the western world.

C8H10N4O2 · 27/08/2021 20:28

I don’t think anyone’s saying nobody was telling rape jokes 10 years ago. Plenty of shit men were telling rape jokes ten years ago. And plenty of us recognised it at the time as something shit men were doing, not as a universal thing we were all doing

Indeed, and long before then. And then as now, there were shit women telling us to shut up and know our place as they rushed of do the the menz dirty laundry.

C8H10N4O2 · 27/08/2021 20:29

of do

"off to do"

TheOnlyWayisher · 27/08/2021 20:29

I think he’s funny, and his tweets were clearly jokes

Journeyofthedragons · 27/08/2021 20:33

I dont like Graham Linehan's tweets joking about his love of porn, i.imgur.com/l33VDkA.jpg
I find them degrading to women, can we get the BBC to cancel Motherland please?

hocusspocuss · 27/08/2021 20:34

OMG @MyPatronusIsACat You're right! You have won at Mumsnet.

45% is way, way better than 55%.

Lessthanaballpark · 27/08/2021 20:35

Your post on rape could be seen as more traumatic than his joke

Isn’t that the point though? A woman describing her own rape is considered bad taste but a man joking about it is funny.

RocketPanda · 27/08/2021 20:46

Rape jokes were certainly not considered funny ten years ago and were usually met with Hmm face.
And his current trans tweet is very inaccurate, I think he is mixing up the denial of women their rights with trans people not having equal rights. Women and girls are being denied their right to a same sex environment for toileting and changing up and down this country. Women in prison are actively locked in with rapists. I think those are the equal rights he means are being denied.

I never said it's so much better. I said, the amount of people agreeing with the OP (posting on the thread AND voting,) is much closer than your derogatory posts against her on this thread are implying.

But you know that of course.

Don't worry - being sarcastic and demeaning (as you are being towards me) is a common reaction from someone who knows they're wrong, and doesn't have a decent comeback. Smile

It's not that hard to admit you're wrong. Just try it some day. Smile

No there was a bit of a fuss made that she shouldn’t have said it. Not a huge amount of cheering on. People pointed out that the show she was on was called “Heresy” and as such maybe they should be prepared of somewhat offensive jokes.

Yet when Boris Johnson says the 'wrong thing' he is lambasted. Typical hypocrisy of the far left

Boris is a politician. Just because a comedian makes a joke on a particular program or Twitter account. That doesn’t make it ok for Brian or Brenda in accounts to make the same joke in the office. Or the prime minister.

Flapjak · 27/08/2021 20:54

We really shouldnt police comedy. I am sure he is equally derisive about all sorts of people .

Yep, quite.

And if I, as a rape survivor, find his jokes in bad taste, I should just get over myself.

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 20:55

Rape jokes/ misogynist jokes have been considered funny by a fairly large number of men for ages. Ten years ago. Now.

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 20:56

The rape tweet is weird.

It's not a joke it's just random.

I wonder what the context was.

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 20:57

If none then ????!!!!

Charmtaste · 27/08/2021 21:03

@NiceGerbil there was no context it was a standalone tweet.

Agreed

adawong · 27/08/2021 21:10

It's the fuckung BBC what do you expect?

NerrSnerr · 27/08/2021 21:10
@NiceGerbil there was no context it was a standalone tweet.
How do you know that OP? Back in 2011 tweet threads didn't exist (unless someone replied) so unless you scroll back through his timeline to 2011 we have no idea what he tweeted before or after (unless lucky enough to guess search keywords).

adawong · 27/08/2021 21:11

Or even the fucking BBC.

LaProcureure · 27/08/2021 21:12

I am a feminist. I love GBSB. I love Joe Lycett on GBSB, so shoot me.

He has also said he no longer thinks his previous views on porn were right and didn't recognise the problems with it, he's reflected and changed his view. That's fine.

I don't agree with cancelling people, it's pointless and doesn't actually help either side of an argument. No need for individuals to be 'sacrificed'.

The wider question as to why misogyny is viewed as acceptable and that comedians, such as JL, can use it for easy laughs would be a better focus. Or a real discussion on the problems the easy access to porn is having on both mens' views on women and their expectations of their sexual partners.

ChocBeforeCock · 27/08/2021 21:22

@Snailhaterz2

I'm an old fashioned feminist, and could easily be described as a Terf. I also bloody love Joe Lycett on Sewing Bee. It's a lovely programme, where he is nothing other than supportive of all the participants. He also does some quite interesting stuff in Joe Lycett's got your back, which is basically a consumer rights programme. I'm totally against people like JK Rowling being "cancelled" as Terfs for spurious reasons, and therefore its only fair that people like Joe Lycett are treated similarly.
I agree. It was a stupid tweet (the trans one) which displays glaring ignorance as to issues regarding sex and gender, but I don’t want to see people try to get him cancelled over it.

He should apologise for the historic tweets and that should be the end of it.

GoWalkabout · 27/08/2021 21:24

Don't agree with twitter mobs going for people. Follow or unfollow, watch or don't watch, complain at the time or when he was appointed but joining in a pile on after a digging mission I don't have a lot of time for.
