Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

You cannot seriously believe that was a set up. That was him attempting to save face in a very desperate attempt that has not worked for the sane people out there. His statement was a whole load of crap.

Bawse · 27/08/2021 19:39

cancel culture has a blind spot when it comes to misogyny and, far from being snowflakes, women become inured to prominent people being misogynistic, sexist and creepy, because if we cancelled them all there would hardly be anyone left. (Anyway, I don't agree with cancelling people, but it would be nice if the media would challenge them on this stuff. There probably won't be many articles or interviews where the likes of J.K. Rowling or Simon Callow aren't associated with bigotry, so why should the likes of Joe Lycett always be treated with kid gloves?)

Completely agree with this.

ZenNudist · 27/08/2021 19:39

Joe Lycett is a professional troll. It's funny. Don't recognise those comments of being very representative of his usual humour. Seem more like Jimmy Carr frankie Boyle "humour". They are quite clearly not serious. He's made a career of winding people up. I like him.

So do I.

They were filming concurrently behind the scenes – so before he went on, he was explaining in real time to another crew that he was about to go on and pretend to strop off. I was slightly sceptical when I heard the explanation, but I then saw the programme which shows the whole thing being done.
GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 19:42

I think we also like to tell ourselves “oh he doesn’t really MEAN it, he’s probably lovely deep down,” because it’s more reassuring than facing reality.

For everyone saying rape and battery type jokes were acceptable ten years ago. They really weren’t! How scummy do you have to be to find this sort of thing funny?

This. ^

Why are people acting like this was 100 years ago? It was 2011 FFS. Just 10 years ago. Stop minimising what he said, acting like it was nothing, and saying 'but it was sooooo long ago.' Hmm (It wasn't!)

If this had been Jim Davidson who'd said this, the people defending Joe Lycett would be calling for him to be banned off TV! Such hypocrisy.

I can't stand Joe Lycett anyway. He's irksome, and about as funny as piles. I hope he is booted off the show tbh.[/quote]
Sorry but piles are hilarious.

Clymene · 27/08/2021 19:47

@WhenSheWasBad - I wasn't saying there was anything funny about it.

Misogyny isn't funny. I think it's really sad that some women defend it

Journeyofthedragons · 27/08/2021 19:48

What's funny about rape?

Jokes about male prison rape along the lines of "Don't drop the soap in the shower" are as popular now as they have been.

SparksAndLarks · 27/08/2021 19:50

Joe Lycett uses sarcasm a lot.

It may be the lowest form of wit but this was ten years ago.

These tweets are snippets taken out of context which are being used in a bid to cancel Joe.

Maybe it's because he's bi and someone doesn't like that.
Maybe it's because he supports trans rights.
Maybe it's because some just hate him and see an opportunity.

I dislike cancel culture immensely.
To err is human
People say things
People apologise
This used to be enough
Not any longer
Not once the offence seekers eventually show up

HomesForHedgehogs · 27/08/2021 19:50

Oh I love Joe Lycett Grin Think he’s absolutely hilarious.

I’m not defending misogyny. Just that comedy is sometimes offensive and comedian’s should not lose their jobs because they told an offensive joke 10 years ago (or even last week).

When Jo Brand made a joke about throwing something in Nigel Farage’s face (acid I think, but I could be wrong). I defended her too. As it was clearly a joke, she wasn’t actual inciting violence.

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 19:52

Maybe it’s the jokes about rape and about hurting women? Just a mad random theory.

Agree, they were not funny or "mainstream" ten years ago, nor twenty nor thirty years go. These kind of jokes were challenged back in the 80s, along with racist and homophobic and other bigoted jokes. There was no lack of understanding that "just a joke" was a part of creating a culture or bigotry and minimising violence against the targets.

Even so if he were to say "I was 23, I was a bit of a dick, I wouldn't make such jokes now" then OK, everyone should get a second chance for mistakes made when young.

However his language more recently uses misogynist tropes which may be why he hasn't apologised for shitty misogynist rape jokes, or even issued one of those non-apologies so beloved by celeb bigots of all types. That suggests to me that he is just another MC white boy punching down on women for larfs.

DontBeAHaterDear · 27/08/2021 20:06

Those definitely aren’t funny jokes but luckily for him (and his fans) he’s got better at them over time. I love him, I really don’t think he’s a misogynist- he’s pretty indiscriminate with which sex/gender he takes the piss out of. I don’t watch GBSB but love Joe lycetts got your back and his stand up.

wonderstuff · 27/08/2021 20:06

Seems that gay men get a pass to be misogynistic.

SushiGo · 27/08/2021 20:09

I don't know how old the posters are saying that people weren't making jokes about rape 10 years ago but I am pretty much exactly Joe's age and - yes. Yes they were.

mean/violent 'edgy comedy' was all over the place. And had been for years previously (think about all the jokes that got make about Monica Lewinsky in the late 90s - that culture absolutely had not gone away yet in 2011)

It doesn’t make it in any way funny, or okay, but it was in the realm of normal.

So, no i am not going to cancel someone for making shitty jokes ten years ago.

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 20:14

I don’t think anyone’s saying nobody was telling rape jokes 10 years ago. Plenty of shit men were telling rape jokes ten years ago. And plenty of us recognised it at the time as something shit men were doing, not as a universal thing we were all doing.

Do you not see the difference between a female comedian making a joke about a male politician (personal) and a man making jokes about sexually assaulting women (general)?

Actually I think you do.

Would making jokes about lynching be okay? Or the Holocaust?

Are those also funny?

GoldenOmber · 27/08/2021 20:20

plus, I don’t think Jo Brand’s defence was “I don’t actually dislike Nigel Farage.”

@hocusspocuss

It's not Brexit *@MyPatronusIsACat* - the numbers mean fuck all
The numbers only mean 'fuck all' when it suits.

If the poll result said 95% of people think the OP is being unreasonable, you'd say 'YABU OP, and the poll results prove it.'

Yeah you would. And we all know it. Wink

It's up to 45% now by the way - who think the OP is not being unreasonable. Almost half. And many of the comments agree with her too, that Joe Lycett is unfunny and his 'jokes' are vile.

You may not like to admit that, because it doesn't suit you to agree that virtually as many people agree with the OP as what disagree with her. But the fact is that she DOES have virtually as many people agreeing with her, as not agreeing with her. Whether you like it or not.
