Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

@Flapjak

We really shouldnt police comedy. I am sure he is equally derisive about all sorts of people .
Not at all? So anything allowed, jokes about the Holocaust, racist jokes, absolutely anything? Not being sarky, would be interested to hear if you do mean anything.

If it does contravene hate speech laws you should be allowed to say it.

Bernard Manning came up earlier on the thread. I don’t think he would make it was a comedian now. Not because his jokes are offensive (although yes they offend many/most people). He wouldn’t make it because today’s audiences wouldn’t find him funny.

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 21:43

Cock it. That should be if it doesn’t contravene hate speech

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 21:45

It's not policing to say you think a joke is nasty.

People can make jokes about what they like.
People who hear them are fine to react however they will.

Certainly certain jokes would mean the end of a comedy career on telly etc.

When people say don't police xyz what they mean is not that. But that people shouldn't say wow that's awful etc.

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 21:45

Hate laws?

The ones that don't include women you mean?

Heh.

HermioneKipper · 27/08/2021 21:46

Yes woman hating piece of shit

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 21:47

I'm generally in favour of people saying whatever and facing the consequences.

It's tricky though when there are plenty who like whatever.

HermioneKipper · 27/08/2021 21:47

Apparently you’re allowed to hate women. If he’d said this about any other group he’d be sacked immediately

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 21:51

The ones that don't include women you mean

That needs fixing in my opinion.

If a comedian told a joke in a way that actually incited violence against women (or men), they should be prosecuted.

To bring up Jo Brand again. There is no way you could, seriously suggest she was inciting people to throw acid at Nigel Farage. And people were throwing milkshakes at him at the time.

We really do need to see jokes as jokes from comedian’s. I personally don’t think it’s appropriate for politicians to do the same as they have a completely different role and what they say actually matters.

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 21:52

I’m not about to trawl his Twitter feed. But he’s a pretty sarcastic bloke. I’ll bet there’s disparaging jokes about lots of people.

WhenSheWasBad · 27/08/2021 21:55

Hmm the title of the thread is JL should be presenting GBSB

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 22:02

Ah well that's it isn't it.

I have problems with that bloke who said cut her face up presenting a quiz show. He said it was a joke.

Also boy George being on that talent show.

But in the end what I think doesn't do anything.

You are saying that it's not on for anyone who thinks a person is iffy for whatever reason to think they are a poor choice to present a family show or whatever?

It's just an opinion. And having a presenting job esp on av popular family show is not a given.

Misogyny / sexism is not protected by hate speech.

So whatever a man may say as a 'joke', reacting to that by saying well fuck he shouldn't have that job imo. Is out of order?

MooseBreath · 27/08/2021 22:03

Pretty sure Joe Lycett's brand of comedy is tongue-in-cheek. He didn't mean for those things to be taken seriously, as he is a comedian and they are jokes.

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 22:07

I'm not surprised he can be a dick about women at all. I'm not keen because you can see it on sewing bee. This doesn't make any difference to me.

That said.

Moose I don't get the rape joke. Can you explain it? I've read it a few times and I assume there must be some missing context.

You get it though so what am I missing?!

MarioPants · 27/08/2021 22:18

@rumpelrumpel

I’m disappointed as I liked him!

For everyone saying rape and battery type jokes were acceptable ten years ago. They really weren’t! How scummy do you have to be to find this sort of thing funny?

But to put it in context - he could be seen as enabling / encouraging misogyny whereas I’m more upset and quite triggered by the rapturous welcome Ronaldo is getting at Man U and afaik he’s an actual rapist. Puts me right off (men’s) football.

For anyone with ptsd - even sewing and sport arent safe areas.

I have PTSD because I was raped by a man. I am upset that my condition is being used as another stick to beat trans women with. All the trans people I know just want to use same sex spaces for the same reason as everyone else - use the loo, get changed, try on clothes. None of them want to attack me, you or anyone else in that space.

I expect that person to be a professional and understand their audience. I’m sure any “material” he uses is considerable tamer than what he might use in one of his tours.

A bit like Gordon Ramsey swearing at chefs on his kitchen nightmares program. God knows why chefs put themselves through that but they know what they are letting themselves in for.
Then you see Gordon Ramsey with kids cooking for him and he is really sweet and obviously there is no swearing.

Jo is a professional and I’m sure he pitches things right for a BBC show. If he didn’t he’d be out of work very quickly.

Clymene · 27/08/2021 22:20

@MarioPants WTF does this have yo do with trans rights?! Confused

JL made a pro trans tweet leading to the OP posting screenshots of 10 year old tweets in the hope that he be cancelled.

Yeah hilarious. I assume you thought they were funny did you?

Are you in the room with the OP @Journeyofthedragons? Confused

HermioneKipper · 27/08/2021 22:32

@MarioPants but this isn’t the issue. I’m sure most trans people are perfectly lovely but allowing any man who can self identify as a woman into safe spaces is opening women up to a myriad of dangers. Much like “not all men” would seek to abuse this, there are some that will.

Are you aware that nearly all trans women keep their penis?

I haven’t been through what you’ve been through but I’ve been harassed and assaulted and I don’t feel comfortable undressing or lying vulnerable in a hospital bed next to anyone with a penis

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 22:37

Sorry I don't understand.

I felt he was sexist before all this.

I am free to think that.

I would prefer sewing bee with a different presenter. Again I am free to think that.

My views will have zero impact on his TV career or anything.

And if you think all comedians get it right then. That's very strange! They're just people.

Journeyofthedragons · 27/08/2021 22:39

@Clymene

Are you in the room with the OP *@Journeyofthedragons*? Confused
Yes
NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 22:39

Male person is thought by some women to be a bit of a misogynist. Male person gives opinion on something that affects women a lot and him not at all.

I mean so what. Happens all the time. Women saying yeah that's pretty crap is going to have no impact on anything.

What's the problem?

NiceGerbil · 27/08/2021 22:40

Oh and can someone please explain the rape joke! I just don't get it at all
