Joe Lycett should not be presenting GBSB

Joe Lycett is a horrible misogynist. He has no place hosting GBSB. If he is allowed to continue then it proves that society does not care about misogyny.

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

He calls flowers in his garden 'bitches' and 'sluts'. He could be referring to anyone/thing.
I think he's taking about his garden hoes.
@WhenSheWasBad what about all his other tweets where he voices that he basically hates women?
I don't get that joke either tbh.

The boy is going to nick the TV? It would be broken though.
Black Friday is a reference I'm not familiar with to VAWG?

Oh hold on its about the crowds and violence right?

The dad is teaching the boy how to get the stuff in the crowds?

Ok ok.

So I would say
Why a woman
Why such a visceral description
Why the abdomen in particular? The telly would be covering it. Why not the face? Punching in abdomen with women can be extra nasty for obvious reasons

So yes I get the joke but it's pretty thin.
Feels like less of a commentary on black Friday crowds behaviour and more an excuse to laugh at boys being taught by their dads to punch women. In the abdomen of all places.

But I mean this sort of stuff is hardly uncommon. Loads of men do have a good old laugh at this sort of shit. Plenty of women too, tbf.

So whatever.

RavingAnnie · 28/08/2021 00:27

I don't think you understand his jokes.

stillvicarinatutu · 28/08/2021 00:38

Jesus Christ .

The wrong think police return . If you don't like him or get his humour- here is an idea ! Turn the tv off !

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2021 01:10

Raving I'd say more that I'm not the target audience.

Very few things are objectively funny/ not funny. Many people find different things funny.

And that's perfectly normal.

With the black Friday one I see the focus of the humour as a man teaching his son to punch women in the stomach to get the goods. It's funny because it's seen as shocking/ outrageous in part. But also because a lot of people do find the thought of women being on the receiving end of male violence pretty funny/ satisfying. The you wanted equality ha I can punch you in the face now. The choice of abdomen adds an additional dimension.

That's the focus of the joke rather than the fact that people can and do physically fight over this (and happened a new IKEA as well).

That's my take.

Over analysis sure.

I mean I don't care people (men) joke about rape and being violent etc all the time. So what. It's totally normal in real life so why not on the telly.

Do you feel that way about the sexist jokes in the 70s?

Or about jokes about people with disabilities?

How do jokes about sexual abuse of children grab you?

I've heard plenty of men joke about those things irl. Racist/ misogynist/ homophobic etc. They usually aren't funny, more about an excuse to put people down and laugh about it.

I mean surely everyone has a line...? Somewhere? Irl/ in entertainment?

If it's ok for jokes about anything to be told, why is it not ok for those who think. That's shit. To talk about it?

Like I say I've heard much worse so personally not that fussed. No surprise either tbh.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 28/08/2021 01:20

I hate him he isn't funny and has a real air of superiority about him. And yes I've seen him be very rude and dismissive to women on panel shows etc. Awful man but nobody cares about misogyny sadly

JaneJeffer · 28/08/2021 02:55

I wish Twitter would die.

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 08:18
@WhenSheWasBad what about all his other tweets where he voices that he basically hates women?
I don’t think you got the joke Hermione

That joke in no way suggests he hates women. The awful thing is there are pages and pages of appalling misogynistic crap on the internet (incels).

Why waste your time fussing over Jo?

HermioneKipper · 28/08/2021 08:25

It’s just not funny. Or is it to someone who likes to hurt women?

High profile people saying that women don’t matter and that any self id-ing man can enter women’s spaces or compete in women’s sports makes me angry, as it should every woman. As well as the issue of gay peoples rights to be attracted to the same sex being impinged on.

Joe wants to say that women don’t matter publicly, then he can expect some backlash

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 28/08/2021 08:30

How come it can be 'God lighten up it's just a joke' when it comes to 'jokes' about violence against women. But when a comedian 'jokes' about hurting black people, or comments about their ability to do their job, they're (rightly) cancelled like Andrew Lawrence? But when people get similarly upset about jokes about beating women up it's women's fault for get offended because they didn't laugh or 'get it'

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 08:36

It’s funny because he is teaching his son to do a completely reprehensible thing. To hit a woman in the abdomen. The son has a decent moral compass “must I papa” and the dad (Jo) is training him to be a selfish consumerist.

The joke is that hitting women in the abdomen is reprehensible. And Jo (and consumerist society) are utter bastards to think that behaviour is fine if it grabs you a cheap tv on Black Friday.

God I hate explaining jokes.

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 08:54

It’s just not funny. Or is it to someone who likes to hurt women

No Hermione you don’t find it funny. No joke is funny to 100% of people.

As I’ve written above the joke hinges on a dad getting his son to do a reprehensible violent act. In the name of grabbing a cheap TV on Black Friday.
It doesn’t condone violence against women.

HermioneKipper · 28/08/2021 08:55

@WhenSheWasBad are you actually Joe Lycett? Repeatedly trying to explain his unfunny jokes to make us change our minds about his clear disdain for women?

Not working I’m afraid

I’m not even a Jo Lycett fan. I’m just really bothered by the “comedy police” if you don’t like a comedian don’t watch them.

If they do some thing tomorrow that is very controversial, it gets discussed on a national level and comedian’s have lost work due to it (Julien Clary).

Trawling through ten years worth of Tweets to find offence in jokes you don’t understand is pretty low.

hocusspocuss · 28/08/2021 09:12

People arguing back and forth about something as subjective as comedy is just about as stupid as it gets. No consensus of opinion is going to be reached here.

GreyhoundG1rl · 28/08/2021 09:15

God I hate explaining jokes.
I wouldn't bother going forward then, you've made a piss poor job of it.

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 09:21

I wouldn't bother going forward then, you've made a piss poor job of it

Maybe you could explain it to me then?

Would love to hear an alternative explanation. I’m not being sarcastic. Genuinely not sure how anyone can read that joke and think Jo is condoning violence against women.

HermioneKipper · 28/08/2021 09:29

I do understand the “jokes” they’re just not funny. And yes I do take offence to people showing their misogyny with no shame.

And luckily some people on Twitter pulled the tweets so I didn’t have to

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 09:40

I do understand the “jokes” they’re just not funny

I don’t think you did. You posted that joke as an example of Jo hating women. That joke (bat, abdomen), does not indicate at all that he hates women.
He clearly has a fairly dark sense of humour that won’t appeal to everyone. Which is fine, he shouldn’t lose work because of it.

Naunet · 28/08/2021 09:55

So disappointed by his rape “jokes”.

C8H10N4O2 · 28/08/2021 10:35

It’s funny because he is teaching his son to do a completely reprehensible thing. To hit a woman in the abdomen

It fails because its punching down. It fails because violence against women is so utterly normalised men don't need to be taught to do it (verbally or physically).

A woman might get away with that joke reversing the reality just as a disabled person can joke about disability but when the "punching group" tries to make a joke of its own behaviour it simply reinforces the status quo.

WhenSheWasBad · 28/08/2021 10:45

It fails because its punching down

The whole point is it’s punching down. It’s a reprehensible act. I don’t expect everyone to “get” the joke. Different people have different senses of humour and that’s ok.

Mickarooni · 28/08/2021 10:47

The tweets are offensive and inappropriate. It was 2011 and he was 23, a fully grown adult. It wasn’t acceptable back then! That said, I think a sincere apology will do and I definitely don’t think he should be cancelled.

C8H10N4O2 · 28/08/2021 11:35

The whole point is it’s punching down. It’s a reprehensible act

No - its the joke which is punching down.

Violence against women by men is not considered a reprehensible act by society at large whatever fine words people might utter. If it were truly considered reprehensible, then we would not see the murder and assault rate we do against women. Most of which goes unpunished.

You would equally snigger and admire him if he as a white man were making jokes reinforcing racism? Or if he were making "cripple" jokes as an able bodied man?
