My life rules

Things life has taught me

 1. Never never never eat white bread, or feed it to children, it just changes to sugar in your body, it is poison!
 1. Never never never support slave based industry, eg cannabis, clothing made with child labour, UNNESSESARY TECH UPGRADES, like replacing perfectly good working phones for no reason
 1. I'm sure I will think of more. Not much point in going into the environmental ones, like limit meat and diary, and never eat fish, don't drink bottled water etc, much debated elsewhere on Mumsnet

What are yours?

@Clarabellawilliamson

Actually *@54321nought* that year 7 science experiment is a bit misleading here, that is designed to teach you about enzymes. The amylase in the saliva breaks the amylose and amylopectin in the starch into maltose. Maltose is a reducing sugar, so will give a positive 'sugar test' (will turn Benedicts reagent orange/ red).

The thing is, the sugar test only tests for certain types of sugar so even if you tested a spoonful of Tate and Lyle granulated (sucrose) you would get a negative result! Not really that helpful for your argument.

You are correct that the GI of white bread is very high, but it is similar to other simple carbs eg white rice (which is why someone brought it up earlier). If we just went by GI index alone when determining how 'healthy' something is then it would actually be better to just eat straight from the sugar bowl than eat white bread. But that would also apply to brown bread, white and brown rice and congee. A lot of the world would be in trouble! GI index is only part of it. It ain't great for you, but in moderation, it isn't poison. Neither is sugar. But the key thing is moderation!

Oh, and I just asked my 5 year old what are the rules in our house and she shouted 'no bare bottoms on the sofa!' At me Grin

sure, but there are reasons this in particular is emphasised when talking about enzymes, to show that white bread turns straight into sugar in your body

Me too @sofiegiraffe, I just want him to understand why I'm feeling like that and sympathise. Solutions can wait!

Sparklingbrook · 12/08/2021 20:41

Oh no, we're back to the sugar/white bread thing again...

Crikeyalmighty · 12/08/2021 20:42

@54321nought. Are you from Bristol OP? If so I do understand the cannabis concern , my son got hooked for a while whilst in a very reputable 6th form, along with other substances that seemed de rigeur! Lots of sugar is poison and non white bread activists too. Personally I think the word is moderation— I don’t eat sugar much as I don’t have a sweet tooth at all but White bread- I’m not giving that up , particularly salt crusted sourdough

SleepingStandingUp · 12/08/2021 20:42
@SleepingStandingUp I have no idea. Maybe it was just a ploy to get us to feed them artisan granary stuff.
Don't marry/cohabit with a twat that likes porn far too much. They're a weirdo.

Always take wellies, bog roll and a waterproof to a festival.

StrangeLookingParasite · 12/08/2021 22:19

White bread is a very significant part of the diet that causes obesity/diabetes/heart disease etc

Maybe.

Did you go to the University of Gross Generalisations, though?

godmum56 · 12/08/2021 23:17

DerAlteMann · 12/08/2021 23:46
 1. Don't take dietary advice from unqualified people.
 2. Don't t give your opinions (on any subject) to others unless asked for them.
 3. Only bores need to tell you about their religious beliefs (or lack of them).
entropynow · 12/08/2021 23:49

@mynameiscalypso

There's white bread and white bread though. Sourdough from the local baker beats Hovis beats Mother's Shame...

ghostyslovesheets · 12/08/2021 23:58

I love thick white bread, salted butter and peanut butter - I eat it daily and am not obese more do I have heart disease

pigsDOfly · 13/08/2021 00:02

I've lived a fair few years and if I had any 'life rules' or 'things that life has taught me' and decided to make a list I'm pretty sure the first thing I wrote wouldn't be the need to avoid white bread.

I don't know, but surely when you've lived long enough to have reach adulthood, life should have taught you so many more important things than the need to avoid white bread?

DynamoKev · 13/08/2021 00:12

I am shocked how many people on here genuinely don't know it is the equivalent of pure sugar.
It isn’t. That is just arse.

mowly77 · 13/08/2021 00:19

Haven’t read the entire thread but I stumbled across it whilst eating a white - bread delicious sandwich.

If you eat a jar of beetroot and then go to the loo your wee and poo will be red. You are not dying. It’s just the beetroot.

My husband works on a cannabis farm. There’s no slavery about it. It’s hard physical work under hot lamps but the money and perks are good and it’s actually quite a cushy number. Management is very relaxed.

MissTrip82 · 13/08/2021 05:03

😂😂😂😂

People have lived their entire lives cheerfully eating white bread.

‘Poison’.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
