*There were posters saying calculate student living expenses based on their "need" to run a car - It is an assumption that basing life decisions and planning on car ownership and use is a cultural norm.
No one should base their life decision and planning on the assumption that they can run a car, because a) huge environmental impact, b) car ownership being phased out c) the possibility of losing your lisence for some unexpected, but probably trivial medical condition.
Of course there are exceptions, but the vast majority of car journeys going on in the UK right now are unnecessary and self indulgent.
And the assumed entitlement to car ownership has to change, and in fact is changing, and will change more.
I assume you are one of the self indulgent car drivers who don't like being criticised? And would rather start name calling than address the actual issue, which is that your selfish ness is destroying the planet for everyone.
That's not always the case when people start name calling in response to criticism of behaviour leading to environmental damage, but it normally is.*
You assume wrong sadly. Actually, I'm one of those pesky, self-indulgent disabled folk who can walk mere metres with crutches on a good day but am wheelchair bound on the increasingly frequent bad days. But, in the interest of the planet, I could get rid of my car and become one of those self-indulgent disabled folk that hogs all the NHS resources when I inevitably end up in long term hospital care when my health conditions deteriorate at speed because I've relieved myself (and the planet) of my car.
I'm sure you'd give me a stern talking to about my selfishness either way
