My life rules

Things life has taught me

 1. Never never never eat white bread, or feed it to children, it just changes to sugar in your body, it is poison!
 1. Never never never support slave based industry, eg cannabis, clothing made with child labour, UNNESSESARY TECH UPGRADES, like replacing perfectly good working phones for no reason
 1. I'm sure I will think of more. Not much point in going into the environmental ones, like limit meat and diary, and never eat fish, don't drink bottled water etc, much debated elsewhere on Mumsnet

What are yours?

@liveforsummer

White bread does not cause obesity 😆. Eating too much of pretty much anything and not burning it off causes obesity!

The bare bums on sofas/seats thing seems the most pertinent here and should solve @SleepingStandingUp bare penis at the table problem too!

White bread is a very significant part of the diet that causes obesity/diabetes/heart disease etc
@54321nought

You're over on another thread going on about how no student needs to run a car (clearly no thoughts for the disabled etc. but that's besides the point).
Haven't you had enough of being an unabashed know-it-all? Especially when you've actually been wrong on several points so far...
Interesting...

liveforsummer · 12/08/2021 18:46

I imagine the people affected eat too much of more than just white bread though. I eat lots of white bread and have a bmi of 19

There were posters saying calculate student living expenses based on their "need" to run a car - It is an assumption that basing life decisions and planning on car ownership and use is a cultural norm.

No one should base their life decision and planning on the assumption that they can run a car, because a) huge environmental impact, b) car ownership being phased out c) the possibility of losing your lisence for some unexpected, but probably trivial medical condition.

Of course there are exceptions, but the vast majority of car journeys going on in the UK right now are unnecessary and self indulgent.

And the assumed entitlement to car ownership has to change, and in fact is changing, and will change more.

I assume you are one of the self indulgent car drivers who don't like being criticised? And would rather start name calling than address the actual issue, which is that your selfish ness is destroying the planet for everyone.

That's not always the case when people start name calling in response to criticism of behaviour leading to environmental damage, but it normally is.

How about eating white rice? Is that also poison? Because there are people in Asia who "literally" eat white rice three meals a day and are super slim with low rates of diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Never to CAPITALISE halfway through a sentence, it's very PA!

Unless of course it's to make a point against a previous PA post.

You assume wrong sadly. Actually, I'm one of those pesky, self-indulgent disabled folk who can walk mere metres with crutches on a good day but am wheelchair bound on the increasingly frequent bad days. But, in the interest of the planet, I could get rid of my car and become one of those self-indulgent disabled folk that hogs all the NHS resources when I inevitably end up in long term hospital care when my health conditions deteriorate at speed because I've relieved myself (and the planet) of my car.
I'm sure you'd give me a stern talking to about my selfishness either way Wink

I forgot to vote-even though I have no idea what the AIBU actually is . But the consensus seems pretty accurate TBF. Grin Grin

liveforsummer · 12/08/2021 19:47

@SleepingStandingUp there are no penises in this house. DC and I and even all the pets are female, but I can still sympathise with your cause 😆

DrManhattan · 12/08/2021 19:53
 1. Dont set up a cannabis farm
 2. Use AIBU for AIBU scenarios
 3. Alot of problems can be solved with a long walk
SoupDragon · 12/08/2021 19:54

White bread causes obesity, causes 30-50 thousand deaths per year in the UK

It really doesn't.

OhGiveUp · 12/08/2021 19:56

Are you confusing your kids with ducks op?

Now hang on, i thought the swan people had recanted the "don't feed them bread" stuff and said it was ok afterall??
Clarabellawilliamson · 12/08/2021 19:59

Actually @54321nought that year 7 science experiment is a bit misleading here, that is designed to teach you about enzymes. The amylase in the saliva breaks the amylose and amylopectin in the starch into maltose. Maltose is a reducing sugar, so will give a positive 'sugar test' (will turn Benedicts reagent orange/ red).

The thing is, the sugar test only tests for certain types of sugar so even if you tested a spoonful of Tate and Lyle granulated (sucrose) you would get a negative result! Not really that helpful for your argument.

You are correct that the GI of white bread is very high, but it is similar to other simple carbs eg white rice (which is why someone brought it up earlier). If we just went by GI index alone when determining how 'healthy' something is then it would actually be better to just eat straight from the sugar bowl than eat white bread. But that would also apply to brown bread, white and brown rice and congee. A lot of the world would be in trouble! GI index is only part of it. It ain't great for you, but in moderation, it isn't poison. Neither is sugar. But the key thing is moderation!

Oh, and I just asked my 5 year old what are the rules in our house and she shouted 'no bare bottoms on the sofa!' At me Grin

 1. Follow adage 'this too shall pass' so sit on sofa watching back to back Judge Judy episodes until it does.
2.practice solipsism. 3.happiness is binge eating gherkins.

I did learn a useful one this week (not weird sugar/bread related)
If someone says they want your advice ask them firstly do they want comfort or solutions?

OhGiveUp · 12/08/2021 20:32

@SleepingStandingUp I have no idea. Maybe it was just a ploy to get us to feed them artisan granary stuff.

This is brilliant. I need to tell my OH to say this. He offers solutions all the time when I just need comforting!
