Designer bag-not tacky

Shushimwatchingemmerdale · 27/07/2021 22:43

I really want a special bag, a piece I can keep forever-designer but classy, not showy or tacky. I’ve never had this before. I’m thinking soft leather, definitely not shiny or brand new looking and quite large to use everyday
Is if just shallow and a waste of money?
Any ideas?

@MorganKitten

Always a Birkin
Lol slightly above the stated budget but stealthy flex 👌
Onthedowns · 28/07/2021 20:59

Coach have lovely totes

enoughforme · 28/07/2021 21:06

Coach is good for reasonably priced bags.

Also Mansur Gabriel is reasonably priced, around £500 and has a beautiful collection no logos understated

enoughforme · 28/07/2021 21:06

Mansur Gavriel*

Clarentine · 28/07/2021 21:15

Towards the top end of your budget, but Givenchy Pandora? I love the one in dark navy crinkled leather.

mobear · 28/07/2021 21:48

Saint Laurent East West Tote (www.ysl.com/en-gb/shopping-bag-saint-laurent-e-w-in-supple-leather-809155990.html). I also have an LV Neverfull. I throw the Neverfull around more (it’s become my baby bag and is holding up well!) but it is more showy which doesn’t sound like what you want. If you want something more structured maybe the Saint Laurent Lou Lou (Medium - it’s huge), although it’s a bit above your budget. They do it with black hardware if you want something less flashy (www.ysl.com/en-gb/shoulder-bags/loulou-medium-in-matelasse-“y”-leather-574946DV7281000.html).

@Ghosttile

£15? You can get a bag for life for £2 you spendthrift.
🤣

The lovely Vivienne Connolly on YouTube has some excellent advice on luxury bags.

omgthepain · 28/07/2021 22:49

@NYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYN

Not mulberry

There are several kids at my daughters school with mulberry as school bags. They are no longer "that luxury item" anymore.

What is your budget??

Jesus Christ really??? And I thought a smiggle backpack was a treat 🤣
FastFood · 28/07/2021 22:55

If I was into handbags I'd go for a Jerome Dreyfuss. The lambskin leather is absolutely amazing.
Or Rebecca Minkof.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 28/07/2021 22:57

Please, whatever you do, do not buy an LV.

Tacky and too many fakes. Round here all the school girls seems to have them.

lastqueenofscotland · 28/07/2021 23:02

Mulberry is common as much these days

For an absolute budget blow (if you can get hold of one) I don’t think you can go wrong with a Birkin.
I really like some of the YSL plain black ones

imamule · 28/07/2021 23:03

😆😆

I can't take advice from someone who chose that top!!

enoughforme · 28/07/2021 23:09

@lastqueenofscotland don't you think Birkin is a bit pretentious and ostentatious? For the money it costs I feel like it perhaps gives the wrong connotations and is a bit much?

I've thought about one and declined based on the above

itsnotmeitsu · 28/07/2021 23:50

I have a Fossil suede handbag which I love. I own a watch by them, which led me to the handbags. I also have a vintage ('80s) Coach bag, and my 'Coach Barbie' has one of their bags. But the Fossil bag goes with practically everything, as actually does the vintage Coach. I also have a new Coach 'rainbow' handbag, but find that more difficult to work with what I'm wearing (although I absolutely love it).

Luckingfovely · 28/07/2021 23:55

@CareBear50 I love that Polene bag and the brand - may be my next purchase!

I’ve got a Rebecca Minkof. Cheap as chips compared to some of the names here! Obviously the designer handbag for people who aren’t into designer handbags!
LaraDecouvrie · 30/07/2021 13:22

What about a longchamp? They’ve been around for ages, I have a couple of them and they’ve lasted well

Verite1 · 30/07/2021 13:24

Bottega Veneta. Beautiful bags and no labels on show at all. Get better with age.

Verite1 · 30/07/2021 13:30

Or a proenza?

LadyPoison · 30/07/2021 13:40

I love my vintage Mulberrys. Classic, stylish and don't date. I have some from the 1970s I'm still using. Lovely thick leather and they age beautifully.

The modern ones are awful -cheap looking shiny clasps and detailing and the leather is much poorer quality. I stopped buying them after my Alexa handbag started to look dreadful after a couple of months use.

CounsellorTroi · 30/07/2021 13:48

Just googled Bottega, not my cup of tea at all, I think they look tacky especially the ones with chains.

Catflapkitkat · 30/07/2021 13:53

Not Mulberry. I have two and the lock has broken on both of them. It's very common, happend to a couple of friends as well and it's costs a fortune to have them repaired by Mulberry when it's clearly a design fault.

Coach have some lovely bags. Strathberry too. If you want something more edgy Swedish brand Acne Studios.

Birkens/Chanel 2.55 have lost their appeal - every reality/housewife/naff celebrity has them - it's like a uniform.

yoursfroobly · 30/07/2021 13:55

A goyard tote is great for everyday

I agree, no to mulberry, Kate spade, ted baker. No no no.

Bottega is lovely and such good quality leather.

I've attached some pics of some understated bags I think are lush
