Designer bag-not tacky

Shushimwatchingemmerdale · 27/07/2021 22:43

I really want a special bag, a piece I can keep forever-designer but classy, not showy or tacky. I’ve never had this before. I’m thinking soft leather, definitely not shiny or brand new looking and quite large to use everyday
Is if just shallow and a waste of money?
Any ideas?

I have a nice Kate Spade bag. Black leather, not too stiff or floppy. No fussy bits.

youdoyoutoday · 27/07/2021 23:34

Then if its a gift, go for it!
You've now had me shopping for the LV neverfull... I'm so tempted but whilst the younger one is still in a pram, its just going to get on my nerves but one day, it will be mine! Grin

duckyla · 27/07/2021 23:34

Mulberry hasn't been great for a while. The only brands with longevity are Chanel & Hermes but £££££
Other big brands are in but tend to dominate & then go quiet for a bit. Loewe have beautiful options and are the brand of the moment along with Bottega V.
Maybe a less well known just excellent quality bag in a classic shape is bettter.

Luckingfovely · 27/07/2021 23:36

Mulberry is so over now.

The biggest factor I would take into consideration is the proliferation of fakes - Gucci, Prada, Chanel, LV, Chloe fakes are everywhere. And so I'd be cautious about those brands.

Loewe, Bottega, Balenciaga, Anya Hindmarch are all much better investments than any of the above.

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 27/07/2021 23:37

Tods might be worth a gander.

LesLavandes · 27/07/2021 23:41

I have 3 beautiful Loewe bags. They are expensive but worth it.

Luckingfovely · 27/07/2021 23:42

Also possibly worth looking at Stella McCartney (green creds) or Saint Laurent?

I love Radley for the day and LV for the evening. Lots of vintage shops where I live and finding a bargain is very probable!

Nat6999 · 27/07/2021 23:42

If you want LV, keep checking TK Maxx website, they sometimes had second hand ones for £799.

LEMtheoriginal · 27/07/2021 23:43

I like the loewe puzzle bags. My car doesn't work btw Grin

toconclude · 27/07/2021 23:45

Yes, utter waste of money. My smartest bag cost £15 in a charity shop. But you don't really want to know if you're BU. You just want cheerleaders. Can't oblige.

Ghosttile · 27/07/2021 23:48

£15? You can get a bag for life for £2 you spendthrift.

Shushimwatchingemmerdale · 27/07/2021 23:49

@toconclude Hmm, yes part of me thinks that too..but, I also just really want one 😅and I never really want anything just so simply materialistic..my whole life I spent my earned money on travel and experiences..now it all goes on my Dd, plus, we’re not going anywhere (covid) I’d just like something pretty

Chloe bags look soft and floppy..am veering between one and a classier looking Gucci

A canvas horse bit shoulder bag? 🤷🏻‍♀️Any experts? I’m likely years out with it but 🤣

pinkgin85 · 27/07/2021 23:51

Please no mulberry.

Chloe bags are good for everyday, loewe are great as well,

I realy love Polene as well, much more affordable beautiful everyday leather bags

Ireolu · 27/07/2021 23:52

@LEMtheoriginal lusting after a puzzle bag. Need to be sensible.....! Threads like this do not help.

NumberTheory · 27/07/2021 23:53
@SunscreenCentral Why not?

Am thinking Mulberry bags are beautiful, but too structured for my life, nicer for when I was working (currently year at home with toddler daughter)

Definitely want large and roomy and soft leather, very simple, no added shiny bits. The kind you just sort of throw around and they retain the slouchiness..won’t be throwing it around though 🤣

Budget maybe around 1500, def can’t do higher at the moment
If your lifestyle has changed so much in a year that what would have suited a year ago no longer does and your needs now are dictated by a recent baby, you probably shouldn't be looking for a bag that you think will last you for years and years.

What you need as a new mum is probably not what you will be as useful in a few years when your children are older.

I'm not saying you shouldn't get a nice bag if you can afford it and find one you think will work for you. Just pointing out that what you choose now, on the basis it suits your current life, may well not be a "forever" bag and if your budget would/should be affected by that, maybe have a rethink.

User1110 · 27/07/2021 23:55

Yes to Loewe! Absolutely gorgeous bags.

Or something like a very plain Prada black tote bag (I have one, and have used it for years).

You could also try brands like The Row/Jil Sander/Celine for nice everyday classic shapes and colours.

Mulberry is no IMO.

QueenOfPain · 27/07/2021 23:56

Get your thread moved to style and beauty. The majority of people in AIBU won’t get your desire for a nice bag.

Shushimwatchingemmerdale · 27/07/2021 23:56

@NumberTheory Well, she’s 3 and off to pre school in September, so isn’t too too full with baby bits

OP posts:
Shushimwatchingemmerdale · 27/07/2021 23:57

@User1110 Yes, did think Prada, black is perhaps a bit too simple for me though

If it’s something lovely rather than a name that you’re after take a look at wandererstravelco.com/. Lovely soft leather, a variety of colours, and you could buy a selection with that budget.

Nextchapterofmybook · 27/07/2021 23:59

@Ghosttile wins the internet today Grin

BananaSpud · 28/07/2021 00:04

Saint Laurent tote bag or if you're looking for soft slouchy leather try the Lou Lou style. Celine have some lovely totes but I'm not sure of cost and if they will be in budget.
