Designer bag-not tacky

Shushimwatchingemmerdale · 27/07/2021 22:43

I really want a special bag, a piece I can keep forever-designer but classy, not showy or tacky. I’ve never had this before. I’m thinking soft leather, definitely not shiny or brand new looking and quite large to use everyday
Is if just shallow and a waste of money?
Any ideas?

Aspinal do a tote or a hobo - with a £1500 budget you could get one of each

Hmm I've got Ysl, Chanel, Dior, Chloe, Hill and Friends and some vintage Mulberry.

Out of them all the craftsmanship I would say from Ysl is on a par with Chanel and Dior, they are quite hard wearing and reasonable when compared to Chanel or Hermes.

Look for pre loved - it's the way forward as you can usually pick something up that's been hardly used for a half to a third off the original price.

If possible even if you are buying from a reputable company I would use an authentication service such as Lolipuff or Zeko as even sites such as Vestaire or Hewi ( hardly ever worn it ) have been known to sell super fakes that got past their in house authenticators.

Good luck looking forward your new bag, that's a healthy budget especially if you look for pre-loved. Brown or Tan is far nicer than black too :-)

@Willwebebuyingnumber11

Please, whatever you do, do not buy an LV.

Tacky and too many fakes. Round here all the school girls seems to have them.

Yes but you can fit your entire life inside the neverfull. I have 3 kids it literally is indestructible. Best purchase of my life. I bought it begrudgingly as I thought it was tacky... now IDGAF it is life proof.
@SunscreenCentral Why not?

Am thinking Mulberry bags are beautiful, but too structured for my life, nicer for when I was working (currently year at home with toddler daughter)

Definitely want large and roomy and soft leather, very simple, no added shiny bits. The kind you just sort of throw around and they retain the slouchiness..won’t be throwing it around though 🤣

Budget maybe around 1500, def can’t do higher at the moment
Neverfull every day of the week.

Giotto479 · 30/07/2021 14:08

If 1500 is your max I’d be looking for a good pre-loved bag, but if you can add to it a Chanel 2:55 is an ace classic. Veer away from Mulberry and the like, they’re not luxe at all. Celine and Loewe are good, Bottega Veneta used to be but they’ve lost all with their new FASHION approach. Todd’s is not my thing, it you might like? Happy hunting!

Giotto479 · 30/07/2021 14:11

@MorganKitten

Always a Birkin
The worst bag I ever bought. Not remotely practical, you’re endless grasping for keys at the bottom of it, you can’t wear on shoulder, and it’s so attention-grabbing. Even in the hallowed halls of Waitrose I’d have people asking to look at it.
PigeonPink · 30/07/2021 14:13

I’m not a fan of totes with open tops, they’re too easy for pickpockets to dip into. I would buy a Strathberry tote because it has sort of a lock that slips over the handle which closes the top. Currently I have an Anya Hindmarch maxi zip satchel and its lovely, not too big but can carry allsorts.

So many fakes. I agree that they’re tacky too, unless you go old school vintage, maybe an original Saumur?
chunderwunder · 30/07/2021 14:15

LV screams chav to me. (I don't actually like that word but it's the easiest way to say what I mean). Like a Burberry baseball cap on a 20 year old in a souped-up Corsa.

Thischarmlessgirl · 30/07/2021 14:32

I love bags, how exciting
I have three Neverfulls and as someone else commented, they are bullet proof.
I have two Chanels but they are far more structured and out of budget. You can get a new collection LV Neverfull for £1500.
My Mulberry Bayswater is my least used bag as it’s so heavy!
My Gucci Disco is really wearable if you are looking for cross body.
Happy shopping OP!

Mirrorxx · 30/07/2021 14:37

The best bags I’ve got that I use mostly everyday are
Celine belt bag
Jumbo classic flap Chanel in caviar
Gucci soho disco

I think the Gucci was only about 800 and the Celine is around your budget.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 30/07/2021 14:45

Have you tried mimco, they have heaps of slouchy bags

Wagsandclaws · 30/07/2021 15:42

@CounsellorTroi far fetch are well known for silly prices, I have only had a couple of Hermes Evelyne's so don't really know lots about Birkins but I know you can buy a relatively new one 2nd hand for 8k upwards so that's some sort of very rare leather or model I would think.

I also think Birkins are overrated, i quite fancy a Kelly one day maybe, I don't like 'old lady bags' hence not liking classic Chanel or Hermes much, I have two Chanel 19's that I adore for their ability to be worn casually or as part of an evening outfit.

Different strokes and all that, so many nice bags to choose from with OP's budget!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 30/07/2021 16:00

I have this as an alternative to the LV Neverful and I love it. Less popular but still very roomy and beautiful.

That is gorgeous! Understated and classy imo.

cosima8 · 30/07/2021 17:14

Hi OP. Not sure if this has already been suggested, but you could look on Vestiare where people sell excellent condition bags at a fraction of the price. You could have a few for different moods.

Personally, I won’t spend thousands on what is essentially part of a dead cow or whatever it may be slung over my shoulder. So Stella McCartney bags - or otherwise, Chloe do a non-leather range at a fraction of the price of the leather ones. They look just as good, last just as long and no dead animal involved. What not to like?

adrianmolesmole · 30/07/2021 17:46

I don't know if this counts as "designer" but I really love these bags: wandererstravelco.uk/

The designs are more subtle (definitely not tacky) and the leather is butter soft. I have one and it feels really high quality and luxurious.

thecognoscenti · 30/07/2021 17:49

Can people please give positive recommendations without being rude about other brands? Describing Mulberry as 'tacky' for example. For some (me included) that sort of bag is something to be dreamed of. It is possible to be nice about brand A without being unpleasant about brand B.

WeeMadArthur · 30/07/2021 17:59

Chloe has some quite nice, understated bags

An LV neonoe in epi leather in black is classic. Or a Tods Holly or any Tods shopper like a joy in dark brown or black.

evespudding · 30/07/2021 18:25

Celine Seau Sangle

Nosugarmonster · 30/07/2021 18:50

Balenciaga motorcycle bag in large- classic and soft- huge enough to throw everything in and comes in loads of colours

Winemewhynot · 30/07/2021 18:51

I was going to say LV neverfull, great for knocking around casual use, I’ve got the GM and can fit my life in it, also you get a cute clutch with it and it fits your budget at £1100. Or what about Gucci Ophidia they have some causal styles but not as roomy as LV.
