Thong bikinis

Born in the late 80s, as a teen I had to endure those huge baggy jeans that got soaking wet all the way up whenever you stepped in a puddle. Low rise jeans were also a bastard. However, I do believe these pale in comparison to the thong bikini.

Now admittedly I have never worn one. But even just looking at one gives me thrush. Not to mention the waxing time. The chafing. The bared all cellulite.

AIBU to think thong bikinis are just the absolute most 'thank god I'm not in THAT generation's fashion item?'

Or can anyone think of worse?

Do real women ever wear them? I thought they were just for Sports Illustrated or Victoria's Secret models. Also an 80s child and was never ever tempted anywhere near one. Thongs as pants were bad enough!

1stTimeMama · 25/07/2021 22:45

Nope, nothing worse exists. YANBU!

OwlinaTree · 25/07/2021 22:46

I noticed they were selling these in Primark the other day - can't say I was tempted!

modgepodge · 25/07/2021 22:47

I’ve seen teenagers wearing them in real life so it’s not just models/celebrities. I don’t think they look good on many people, and MAN do they look uncomfortable!!!!!! As you say, thongs as pants were bad enough.

ohthatbloodycat · 25/07/2021 22:47

They're so pointless, aren't they?!

Travis1 · 25/07/2021 22:56

I follow a really body positive fab instagrammer who owns moana bikini and I’d love to buy some of her products but the thought of baring my hairy arse(helllooooo PCOS 🙄) by the pool is just a no. If this is the new normal I’ll be swimming in leggings

Macncheeseballs · 25/07/2021 23:08

Gross, I've never understood why people want a thong rubbing up against their anus

I wear thongs as underwear and I've never had this problem. Buying the right size helps, of course. They're great for when you don't want an errant VPL popping up.

I wouldn't wear a thong bikini, however! Far too much in public IMO.

TheRebelle · 25/07/2021 23:14

I’ve noticed crop tops and cycling shorts are back in, even the thought of wearing those makes me shudder.

My 19 year old looks amazing! Her 57 year old mother (me) would be arrested for crimes against any humanity who was unfortunate enough to catch a glimpse...

Suitable for 17-20 yr olds. Size 6-8 . Who work out every day.

Anyone else. Just no.

Finknottlesnewt* bit of a niche market that..😂

Personally I'd have to hand out eye bleach to passers by, young teens could probably pull it off.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 25/07/2021 23:24

I was out shopping in a large city centre the other week in very hot weather.

I seen so much underboob. Like a thong bikini, sadly, its all for the male gaze.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 25/07/2021 23:27

I went to Greece about 4 years ago and the younger women were all wearing them then (20s and late teens). It’s obviously found it’s way over here. Not something I’d want to wear either!

PumpkinKlNG · 25/07/2021 23:29

I use to wear them, mainly because no one wants that horrible bum tan you get in normal swim wear 🤣🤣🤣

SpaghettiSpoons · 25/07/2021 23:37

We live overseas and have managed to get a summer holiday in this year.

I was just messaging my girl friends about this today. I've never seen so many thongs and ass checks hanging out in my life! They're literally everywhere!! Some look amazing, some look, not so amazing, but who cares?! Not me. I'm quite comfy in my Bridget Jones bikini bottoms, listening to my audio book and watching them command their boyfriends (or in one case, the waiter) around the pool, trying to get the ultimate IG shot! It's quite fun watching actually Smile

nonotmenotI · 25/07/2021 23:45

My arse is too hairy to wear one and I can't be bothered shaving.

HeartOfClass · 25/07/2021 23:50

Pre COVID my Dsis went on vacation with our family. She appeared at the pool 1st morning wearing that. Honestly she has the figure for it, but it was a striking comparison with me.

She’s currently staying with us, and inclined to dress like that with this heat. No kids and single so I assume she’s not on MN. Old lady next door has not looked pleased in the garden, don’t like it around the kids and DH at home really

PopAyetheSailorMam · 25/07/2021 23:51

It’s the old catch 22 situation re supply. You can’t buy something alternative if shops aren’t stocking it in the first place. I live near beaches, and whilst I agree with the tenet people should be able to wear what they want, I would simply be obliged if lots of people would wear more of anything tbf.

This is me, I wear a thong as my daily underwear but I would not be strutting down the beach in one.
I'm more comfortable in my skin now but no, definitely not.

SparrowNest · 25/07/2021 23:55

I feel like the pressure on girls, and to some extent young boys, has really ramped up since I was a teen just over a decade ago. Think I read somewhere people are spending a higher and higher percentage of their income on grooming, fillers, gym supplements etc.

MizMoonshine · 26/07/2021 00:00

Shaving up to the cheek to wear "normal" swimwear is enough of a chore. If I had to deforestat the full gorilla I'd weep.
I'm with you. They're the worst.

nicecoffeecup · 26/07/2021 00:12

Some people can get away with it. I’d need to lose a stone and shave. Planning to shave, but can’t lose that stone as easy.

Also, wearing that abroad on holiday might be ok, but when your Dsis visits in England, that’s not for me ( as a person that cleans naked in the summer, but the door is locked and nobody else is here )

OhWhyNot · 26/07/2021 00:22

In the 80’s those horrible costumes with really high cut that is popular again

Not flattering on anyone

Pancakeorcrepe · 26/07/2021 06:30

They are quite popular in continental Europe and other hot countries. People wear them because it is lovely to feel the sun on your skin and get more of a tan. Doesn’t matter what size you are! It’s all about airing the skin which has been covered up under Winter clothes for the whole year. The sun can be great for getting rid of little pimples, dry skin etc. It’s not about looking good or showing off, it’s about feeling good.
