Thong bikinis

Born in the late 80s, as a teen I had to endure those huge baggy jeans that got soaking wet all the way up whenever you stepped in a puddle. Low rise jeans were also a bastard. However, I do believe these pale in comparison to the thong bikini.

Now admittedly I have never worn one. But even just looking at one gives me thrush. Not to mention the waxing time. The chafing. The bared all cellulite.

AIBU to think thong bikinis are just the absolute most 'thank god I'm not in THAT generation's fashion item?'

I genuinely can't get my head around all the comments about getting a better tan. Firstly, if you weren't wearing a thong bikini in the first place no one, literally no one, is going to be looking at your arse/tan lines. Secondly, you're still going to have tan lines on your arse, just at the top only and thirdly, how hard must it be to put suncream on your arse, especially at the sandy beach. And are people just not bothered about skin cancer and/or a burnt arse?!

LeithPlace · 26/07/2021 17:48

I did used to wear thong pants. As I dressed on morning my
three year old DS exclaimed 'mammy, you've left your cheeks out'😀

coogee · 26/07/2021 18:30

So, what do you advocate? Full spf 50 burkinis and a big hat to be worn all times. With gloves and socks, obviously.

Susannahmoody · 26/07/2021 18:45

If you have an arse like a peach, they're great.

If you don't, they're not.

Susannahmoody · 26/07/2021 18:46

Who cares about a tan? Be winter soon

yippee

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 26/07/2021 19:04

Still laughing at the comment that the thing died t touch anus. Of course it does. It’s designed to go i between your bum cheeks. Right where your anus is!

I mean who cares. Wear what you want to wear. Personally I wouldn’t. I haven’t got the figure anymore and even back as a teenager when I had a lovely figure I still preferred a swimming costume. I’ve never been a tanner.

Dd is 15 and wears bikinis. She has way more confidence than I ever did at her age or older. She doesn’t wear a thing one though and I’m not sure I’d want her to. More because of Ben staring. They do that enough already. She’s 15 and has a large chest and no matter what she’s wearing men old enough to be her dad or grandad stare at her!!

Or, just wearing normal swim wear that covers your most delicate bits and putting sun cream regularly on the rest of you? Rather than being dramatic Hmm And yes sun hats are a good call

@bakingdemon

Do real women ever wear them? I thought they were just for Sports Illustrated or Victoria's Secret models. Also an 80s child and was never ever tempted anywhere near one. Thongs as pants were bad enough!
Yes they do. As demonstrated by the pert young things last time I was in Mexico.

Suffice to say my bikini was somewhat sturdier.

MoonlightWanderer · 27/07/2021 04:08

Well, models are “real women” too.

According to Mumsnet logic a woman in a rash vest and board shorts is attention seeking and everyone will look at them. A woman in a crochet thong bikini will be invisible and no one notices what you wear at the beach.

StarlightLady · 27/07/2021 04:57

Let’s let everyone opt for their own style.

As for things being for the male gaze, l have a lesbian friend who wears one.

ZaraW · 27/07/2021 17:54

Beer bellies are hardly attractive, and men don't seem to be bothered about the lack of a six pack. So why all the fuss about a style of bikini?

ApplyWithin · 27/07/2021 21:52

I’m currently on Greece and can confirm they are EVERYWHERE! It’s become quite a family talking point. “Mummy, I can see that lady’s whole bottom!” Either thong style or just very, very high cut to reveal a large amount of buttock. I’ve honestly never noticed it on holiday before so I Mumsnet googled and found this thread. Wear what you want, but I am definitely watching from behind my sunglasses thinking “why, oh why, would you deliberately want your arse out in public?” And why has it not occurred to men to do the same?

They’re aren’t many English people here, mostly Greek, Russian, German, French. The few English women I’ve seen have definitely got their bums covered so maybe it’s a cultural thing.

PopAyetheSailorMam · 28/07/2021 17:17

@Susannahmoody

If you don't, they're not.

So the hair stays ?
TheMoth · 28/07/2021 19:01

Maybe it needs to be an arse like a nectarine.

StarlightLady · 28/07/2021 19:20

On the coat at the moment and seen a mix of everything. May Mumsnet not become Judgenet on issues that have no impact on anybody else. Whether someone chooses to wear a one piece with a round neck and a cut off wetsuit, an extremely high cut one piece, a high waist bikini, a thong bikini or topless, there is room for everybody on the beach.

StarlightLady · 28/07/2021 19:30

Correction. Not on the coat. On the coast.
