Thong bikinis

Born in the late 80s, as a teen I had to endure those huge baggy jeans that got soaking wet all the way up whenever you stepped in a puddle. Low rise jeans were also a bastard. However, I do believe these pale in comparison to the thong bikini.

Now admittedly I have never worn one. But even just looking at one gives me thrush. Not to mention the waxing time. The chafing. The bared all cellulite.

AIBU to think thong bikinis are just the absolute most 'thank god I'm not in THAT generation's fashion item?'

I think the whole bum thing is just... Horribly cringeworthy! The thong bikinis are just the tip of the iceberg. Girls turning around and sticking their bum out in photos, posing at very awkward and unnatural angles to make their bum seem massive, buying those leggings that are designed to go right up your bumcrack so it's visible to everyone and emphasised, videos posted on social media of people doing squats in the gym but the camera pointed behind them and low down so its basically just filming their bum as they squat... I feel like I have seen more of some people's bums than I care to. As a bit of a prude, I can't wait for this craze to be over!

I saw a lady of a certain age on the beach recently who was rather wide of hip shall we say. She was wearing a thong bikini but I unfortunately looked over as she bent over. That sight is forever burnt on my retinas!

I don’t think thong bikinis are a new thing. I distinctly remember my friend, who has always somewhat lacked self awareness, wearing one on holiday about 25 years ago.
She was surprised people were looking at her as she paraded through a shopping mall wearing one, modestly covered in a sheer beach dress.👌

One day that summer I was on the sun lounger and laying on my front and jumped up as felt what I thought was a bug probably on the underside of the lounger where I’d been laying so looked under it couldn’t see anything thought whatever it was must have been big and flown away??

The next day the same thing?? So I jumped up again and ended up dragging the lounger across the garden as thought I must be near some kind of bug nest and was scared of things like big beetles . Laid down on my front again and though wtf ???? I can feel this bug crawling on my stomach again ????

I checked under the lounger again and nothing? I thought I was going mad and felt a bit tearful. Told dm who said maybe I had a trapped nerve? Like when you get a twitch somewhere sort of thing ?
So I laid there this time on my back. Then I pushed my hand down onto my stomach .

Massive kick 🤦‍♀️😱
Turned out I was 20 W pregnant

Well, yes, people generally are negative about things they don't like.

They look wrong on men and women. No one wants to look at your arse.

In 1988 I was working in bank with a "older" woman (she was probably late 30s ) who would tell us often how much her DH loved her in her thong bikini.

@coogee to be fair I didn't realise some women had hair on their bum cheeks either, I thought that was kinda an area where hair just wouldn't grow? Like the soles of your feet or something. I'm surprised it can grow what with the friction and pressure of sitting down and getting up all of the time!

Lots of young, slim and beautiful women wear them on holiday. On the right body they look amazing, but yes, rather uncomfortable! I guess they want to avoid the white bum when tanning!

I wear thong underwear and never have any issues with them being uncomfortable. I find briefs more uncomfortable. If I was more confident I would absolutely wear them as bikini bottoms too! Love the idea of minimal tan lines.

I haven’t worn a thong since before my episiotomy 😣 and I don’t miss them at all.

The idea of wearing a thong bikini- so that people all around me can see my fat, cellulite addled arse is horrendous to think about. To each their own and all that, but I too feel the onset of thrush at the idea. No. Thank. You.

Do real women ever wear them? I thought they were just for Sports Illustrated or Victoria's Secret models. Also an 80s child and was never ever tempted anywhere near one. Thongs as pants were bad enough!

I saw women wearing them at the beach in Bournemouth last weekend.

A few years ago in Mexico I met the most amazing 80 year old woman, rocking her thong and tiny triangle top. She really changed how I think of woman and our amazing bodies.

Again, who is going to care about tan lines that no-one other than your partner or family are going to see?

I feel like lots of people here have either never worn a thong or have worn sizes far too small. The only time I get a wedgie from a thing is when I've fallen asleep in one. They certainly shouldn't be "touching anus" as one pp said 😂

I prefer them! I wear thongs normally and was always restricted to shorts or bikini skirts as I hate the feeling of regular bikini bottoms and the awful grandma pant tan they leave so I'm massively relieved they're everywhere now.
I barely have hairy legs, I definitely don't have a hairy arse, I can imagine that would be annoying.

28, I like them. Wouldn't feel comfortable or confident in them if I was larger though I'm guessing?

I am in favour of people wearing whatever they feel happy and comfortable in.

However, I think that the issue runs deeper than this. Why is swimwear for men not routinely designed to be tight? Why are thong bottoms not the norm for men? Why don’t men want no tan lines?

If we didn’t live in a patriarchal society would women genuinely choose to wear things which often aren’t comfortable or practical (I’m looking at you pocketless clothes)? I’m not sure that they would and wish that there wasn’t such unhealthy pressure to look ‘perfect’ all the time.
