Thong bikinis

Born in the late 80s, as a teen I had to endure those huge baggy jeans that got soaking wet all the way up whenever you stepped in a puddle. Low rise jeans were also a bastard. However, I do believe these pale in comparison to the thong bikini.

Now admittedly I have never worn one. But even just looking at one gives me thrush. Not to mention the waxing time. The chafing. The bared all cellulite.

AIBU to think thong bikinis are just the absolute most 'thank god I'm not in THAT generation's fashion item?'

I prefer wearing thongs and they're not uncomfortable to me at all. I think a lot depends on sizing and making sure to check sizes if buying from elsewhere. Definitely doesn't rub or anything! Also means no annoying VIP when wearing certain clothes. I spent most of my pregnancies wearing thongs as so much comfier in them than regular ones.

However, I do not have the confidence (or the body anymore!) to inflict my bum on anyone else!

For people who want to and who prefer to wear them then on they go... not doing me any harm. Even when I was smaller I wouldn't have had the confidence to wear one though!

One thing that is a bit for me is a bare bum sitting on a chair and then someone else sitting on it....... I know it's daft but that's me!

I love the post above about the 80 year old lady in Mexico Smile she is happy doing her own thing that's right for her.

ChaToilLeam · 26/07/2021 13:41

Awful things. I don’t want to see anybody’s arse at the beach, and I certainly won’t be showing mine.

You don’t see a lot of men wearing them, do you?

iMombie · 26/07/2021 13:46

I’ve just been googling swimming shorts to buy so I don’t even have to think about shaving!! I kinda loved baggy jeans though Grin

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 26/07/2021 13:47

If I still had the body and arse I had when I was a teenager I would happily wear one. Sadly I don't I now have more flab and cellulite then I care to imagine

MizMoonshine · 26/07/2021 13:53

@coogee
I can assure you that I, a woman who has produced two babies, have a hairy arse. Crack and cheeks.
Surprisingly I don't own a beard.
I have PCOS. Got lovely thick black hair in all the places women are told we shouldn't have it. Which is why you won't see it. Because we freaks hide out hairy shame.
Continue your merry ignorance! We will return to our caves.

hamstersarse · 26/07/2021 13:58

They just seem so precarious - like the very little fabric there is could let you down completely at any moment. They are really designed to make women completely stationary.

I prefer a pair of shorts and a bikini top so I can actually 'do stuff', like water sports, swimming, diving, snorkelling etc. without the worry of essentially being naked.

starrynight87 · 26/07/2021 14:08

Went away last weekend, every teenager is wearing the thong bikini bottoms. It's just way too much cheek for me Grin

championofdance · 26/07/2021 14:19

I ordered some bikini bottoms online and accidentally got thong ones. I decided to give them a try and they are extremely uncomfortable.

ledesertsacre · 26/07/2021 14:33

@Pancakeorcrepe

They are quite popular in continental Europe and other hot countries. People wear them because it is lovely to feel the sun on your skin and get more of a tan. Doesn’t matter what size you are! It’s all about airing the skin which has been covered up under Winter clothes for the whole year. The sun can be great for getting rid of little pimples, dry skin etc. It’s not about looking good or showing off, it’s about feeling good.
Surely nobody actually tries to get a tan anymore, do they?
tinglymint · 26/07/2021 14:45

@SheABitSpicyToday

Maybe the person getting the tan cares?
This.
pizzaobsessed · 26/07/2021 14:49

I find them grotty, whatever the age. I don't wish to see that much of anyone! No one seems to have an dignity or sense of privacy any more

CaraherEIL · 26/07/2021 15:07

I think the girls can look beautiful in them. I think a beautiful female figure in any style swimwear still looks beautiful. But I don’t know what I would think if all the men started wearing thongs.

Thegiantofillinois · 26/07/2021 15:09

My friend's husband likes to rock a pair of very tight swimming trunks on holiday. He proudly parades down the beach in them.

He does not have a model body. But he doesn't give a fuck.

I would disown dp if he ever did that, but fair play for being brave,I suppose. So yes, they do make skimpies for men, but most men choose not to wear them.

coogee · 26/07/2021 15:12

This thread conclusively debunks the myth, often touted on the Style and Beauty board, that nobody cares or notices what other people wear on the beach.

Bingomangoes · 26/07/2021 15:14

I live near the beach (UK) everyone under about 23 seems to be wearing them, I think approx 90% would look way better in something else, they look so uncomfortable but I also don't get the white socks with slider type flip flops on the beach thing that seems to be very popular right now and that's probably very practical, so what do I know.

comebacksunshines · 26/07/2021 15:16

Maybe its just my age, but thongs will forever make me think of Peter Stringfellow and probably Borat in his mankini.
They're just not sexy and a bit try hard for me.

It does. There's so, so much judgment. I wouldn't wear a thong to the beach (or anywhere) but I couldn't care less if others do. I would be quite impressed at the confidence!
hamstersarse · 26/07/2021 15:29

Grotty 😂😂😂

I don’t know how that myth started because I’m sure every single person on a beach can’t help but check out what others look like

That’s not to say they give a shit, more that you can’t help looking at a bare arse

ViciousJackdaw · 26/07/2021 17:05

I don't really mind what people wear (or don't) on the beach. Yes, some people do not choose the most flattering swimwear but so what? If they feel good (and all rude bits covered), that's all that really matters.

MyShoelaceIsUndone · 26/07/2021 17:06

Is that the stuff they wear on Love Island? All I see is someone’s sweaty arse on a seat that someone else will then sit on

It's possible to notice and not care.
MrsBobDylan · 26/07/2021 17:28

A thong on a beach I can cope with.

Shorts so tight and so tiny that they gynaecologically reveal the wearer in the middle of the town centre, I can't cope with.

Chuff chaffers.

Tiddleandplonk · 26/07/2021 17:29

We live at a beach in northern england. Folk wearimg them ( visitors ) . It is basically showimg your bottom . Looks odd .

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 26/07/2021 17:33

I'd just have felt like I was showing too much of myself. Now we can't afford the beach, but if we could I'd probably wear a sarong or something, I'm 53!
