Born in the late 80s, as a teen I had to endure those huge baggy jeans that got soaking wet all the way up whenever you stepped in a puddle. Low rise jeans were also a bastard. However, I do believe these pale in comparison to the thong bikini.

Now admittedly I have never worn one. But even just looking at one gives me thrush. Not to mention the waxing time. The chafing. The bared all cellulite.

AIBU to think thong bikinis are just the absolute most 'thank god I'm not in THAT generation's fashion item?'

I had a thong bikini back in the early 90’s when I was in my 20’s, so it’s not a new thing. I always used to wear thong underwear but alas, gravity and lack of fitness regime mean I require much more support these days,

I am an old person and I think they look good on young slim girls but they look about as comfortable as Borat’s mankini !

My 17 yr old dd, who has the figure of a supermodel so can get away with anything, has just bought a bikini with big pants. She much prefers it to her old thong bikini and it looks 100 times nicer on her. She loves it and says she feels so much more comfortable!

So there are some young people out there who don't want it all to hang out!

I'd never wear a thong ever, so chafing and horrible. I wear swim leggings and a tankini top. Nobody wants to see my saggy 60 year old body and they make me look pretty good.
Thank god it acceptable to wear swimming leggings and big pants again. Everyone I know young and old wears shorts under their dresses now.

Hideous (shudders). Even on gorgeous bodies they don't look attractive.

I'm not in the UK but there are nowhere near the amount of thong undies on sale here now, people seem to have come to their senses.

I did contemplate whether they were practical for swimming or not. They cant ride up like a standard cut suit which is good. But i am too hairy.

Sorry this thread wasn't started to say the look bad I didn't mean to offend anyone who does like them - I actually think they look great and of course anyone can wear with confidence.

It's just for me the shaving involved and I would get some kind of UTI or thrush every time I wore it!

I hadn't actually thought about the tanning side of things. When I was younger I probably would have liked getting some sun on my cheeks 🤣

Am in Spain on holiday right now and loads of Spanish girls are wearing them, their perky derrieres look good in them! My ample behind however needs rather more support.

I find thong bikinis revolting, no matter the size of the person wearing them. Just too much. I was on Bournemouth beach the other day and there were so many women wearing them. It’s just..tmi. When people bent over I nearly lost my lunch.

It could be worse. I thought only the Kardashians wore these bikinis to get attention but you can buy them.

wear thongs as underwear and I've never had this problem. Buying the right size helps, of course. They're great for when you don't want an errant VPL popping up

There's a lot of body judging in this post. I think, like anything if the person wearing them likes it and is comfortable then that's all that matters. I personally would love to wear a thong bikini if I had more body confidence. I can't bear wearing knickers - not everyone finds them comfortable!

Not my cup of tea but I noticed they were popular with Russian women last time I went abroad - similarly going topless was at one time popular with Spanish women, not sure if still is. I would feel uncomfortable with both as I don’t like men looking at me

I’ve only ever seen one woman who totally rocked it to be fair. She was quite tall, tanned and extremely fit, with a perfectly toned arse.

Every single other person I’ve seen in them, no matter the age, I always think something slightly more substantial would be more flattering. However it’s up to th individual. I think some folks don’t really know what their bare arse actually looks like in broad sunshine, which can be very unforgiving. It’s not like artificial light. But again, maybe they do and don’t give a shit, so fair play.

I'm a late 90s early 00s thong wearer. I never found them comfortable because they always used to get where they shouldn't. I know I only wore them because they were supposed to be sexy. Ditching them for comfy knickers was the greatest thing ever.

As a bikini, I just can't get past the fact that you're showing everyone your bum. Saw a girl wearing those shorts that show half your bum, in a mini golf place by the sea last week. All I could think was: you're showing everyone your bum. Maybe I need to be more 21 century.

I wouldn't wear one. I have a standard Asda George tankini and even the thought of baring my cellulite in that makes me shudder. Also I was not blessed with perfectly neat labia lol so it's a definite no from me.

I’ve seen a lot on the beaches amongst the younger generation and it does very obviously contrast with the current male fashion of knee length baggy swim / surf shorts.

If I was younger I would choose the big full coverage bikini bottoms but they make me look like a granny! So I just wear normal triangle bikini bottoms as they suit me. So glad I’m too old to be a slave to fashion!

Very popular in Italy - but Italians, ime, are very keen on getting tanned as much as possible. What I was puzzled by is that the thong bikinis that I remember from 90s/00s were quite brief at the front as well but this incarnation looks like a normal, even borderline modest, bikini from the front but then disappears up the wearer's arse when they turn around - at first I thought they were just all giving themselves wedgies to improve their buttock tans.

On a side note, I've never understood why a bit of VPL is considered such a crime.
