AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

Louis Theroux had a docu about Scientology, and he was harassed while filming
It's actually very good.

spongedog · 24/07/2021 23:46

Sorry if already answered.

@Bathroombogey I'd also bet he's really grey but dyes his hair.

Did you watch the British Grand Prix Coverage? TC there and being interviewed multiple times. His hair is clearly dyed - it is too dark for his complexion. Also very set - I might even wonder about a toupee or hair extras.

A bit like Gary Sinise (ex CSI) - in the latest series of NCIS International Rescue - again an American actor - early to mid-60's. Quite good looking in earlier days, but ruined by inappropriate hair.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/07/2021 23:47

It was widely reported in the child custody battle that Holmes and her dad named his religion as a factor in preventing him having contact

They didn't want her round the religion

Also was rumoured that he didn't fight it as kid may not have been his biologically ?

Can't remember now

Glitterandunicorns · 24/07/2021 23:49

@Kanaloa

I find him so utterly creepy. Like a lizard got it’s one true wish to be a real man, and even though it’s walking around in its new man suit it’s still a lizard with no concept of human behaviour.
This is the best description of how he makes me feel that I've ever read Grin
Carrotinthesky · 24/07/2021 23:49

Graham Norton says he's his favourite celebrity because he's always so polite, helpful, never forgets the names of the staff and remembers details about them. He makes really enjoyable films. Yeah, I really like him

Have you heard the tapes of him screaming and screeching at his underlings, threatening to get them sacked? And the fact that nobody is allowed to look at him on set? Weird, horrible bloke. Rich though.

Carrotinthesky · 24/07/2021 23:52

I remember his comments about PND

Absolutely unforgivable. I'm trying to find them as we speak.

Summerdayshaze · 24/07/2021 23:52
@Summerhaze not being funny but do your own research on Scientology and consider that you are not NK and have not ever tried taking on a very wealthy, mad and rather sinister cult.
Well no I can confirm I’m not NK, but you don’t know what I have or haven’t taken on, do you. That’d be no.

Carrotinthesky · 24/07/2021 23:58

It was widely reported in the child custody battle that Holmes and her dad named his religion as a factor in preventing him having contact

It's widely accepted as being a cult rather than a religion.

Love this! Sums him up so perfectlySmile
Carrotinthesky · 25/07/2021 00:00

It would be great if somebody could link that weird black polo neck thing he did in a private ad for scientology. He's really beyond normal.

I think he scrabbled to make amends to Brooke Shields after he made the comments (it was hurting his carefully honed public image no doubt) but Angry
EspressoDoubleShot · 25/07/2021 00:01

Wonder if t.c lawyers or people will impose upon mn to remove thread

PrettyLittleFlies · 25/07/2021 00:07

He is fantastic in action movies. I don't particularly have "feelings" about him, but by god he's good at what he does.

TatianaBis · 25/07/2021 00:07

@Summerdayshaze

Whoosh, over your head.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/07/2021 00:08

Look I privately think it's a cult too Hmm

But I don't want the bloody thread pulled so it's much easier to state that it's registered as a religion for tax purposes in the US

Which - being a lizard or pretending to be human?
PrettyLittleFlies · 25/07/2021 00:09

So freaking sad how all his kids have been alienated. How can anyone wish this for their children.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/07/2021 00:12

Hes got a relationship with the kids he had with NK

MissConductUS · 25/07/2021 00:12

He's a dick who thinks that women with PND shouldn't receive medical treatment.

D0D0 · 25/07/2021 00:13

@Rege

That whole jumping on the couch thing was nauseating to watch considering he was dumping his wife (Mimi Rodgers) for Nicole Kidman who he started having an affair with on set of Far and Away.
Couch was Katie Holmes Rogers and Cruise split in 1990 Far and Away was made in 1992.

Nearly, though. 🤣🤣

Carrotinthesky · 25/07/2021 00:13

I think he scrabbled to make amends to Brooke Shields after he made the comments (it was hurting his carefully honed public image no doubt)

Yeah. He criticised her for using medication for post-partum depression. Scientologists don't believe in medicating psychiatric illnesses. Because psychiatric problems are due to some negative vibes or cells floating around in the universe and absorbed by your body, and the only way to get rid of them is to pay a scientologist to audit you and take you up all the levels till you're clear. Which costs a lot of spondulicks. That's just a precis. So shoot me.

thefourgp · 25/07/2021 00:13

He never seems genuine in interviews. He’s like a second hand car salesman always trying to charm and sell something to you.

He was a great actor though and has made a lot of really good films (born on the Fourth of July/rain man/tropic thunder/a few good men/the last samurai etc) but his narcissist controlling personality got him sucked into being the Scientology’s poster boy.

I think they’ll have so much personal info and dirt on him (including his sexual preferences) from the ‘audits’ they tape and store (plus they stroke his ego and comply with his every whim) that I don’t think he’d be able to leave for fear of having his macho good guy image tarnished. He only started doing the ‘spending lots of time with the movie crowd’ routine after he became a Scientologist. Their whole aim is to get famous actors to join them and convince others to join. It’s a cult.

Livpool · 25/07/2021 00:14

YABU - I can't stand him and haven't watched a film of his for years. He makes my skin crawl

Carrotinthesky · 25/07/2021 00:15

But I don't want the bloody thread pulled so it's much easier to state that it's registered as a religion for tax purposes in the US

Oops. Sorry. I may have taken a step too far then.

LadyWithLapdog · 25/07/2021 00:16

I like him in his movies.
