AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

He's a good actor, has charisma and in his time a good looking man

..... but he's bat-shit crazy.

R0098 · 25/07/2021 00:19

Anyone who still thinks TC is a great guy, please learn more about his cult and then decide what you really think.

Essentially, yes

Watch the documentary Going Clear. It tells you everything about Scientology you need to know and quite a bit about Tom Cruise. Tom’s best mate David Miscavige who’s the head of the church is a nasty little bastard. Shows him for what he really is. Strange how no one has seen his wife for years. There’s so much sinister stuff going on in this cult. It’s scary

thefourgp · 25/07/2021 00:22

He never seems genuine in interviews. He’s like a second hand car salesman always trying to charm and sell something to you.

He was a great actor though and has made a lot of really good films (born on the Fourth of July/rain man/tropic thunder/a few good men/the last samurai etc) but his narcissist controlling personality got him sucked into being the Scientology’s poster boy.

I think they’ll have so much personal info and dirt on him (including his sexual preferences) from the ‘audits’ they tape and store (plus they stroke his ego and comply with his every whim) that I don’t think he’d be able to leave for fear of having his macho good guy image tarnished. He only started doing the ‘spending lots of time with the movie crowd’ routine after he became a Scientologist. Their whole aim is to get famous actors to join them and convince others to join so they make more money.

Not sure about that. I always thought him a bit short and wimpy and obviously standing on an orange box opposite his film amour. You can't act your way out of that. I find it difficult to suspend disbelief.

EmeraldShamrock · 25/07/2021 00:25

I assumed Katie's contract was up.
He truly is appalling and still admired by many.
She was pregnant with Suri within 3 months of meeting him.
Is there truth in the rumours she is not biologically his?

Classica · 25/07/2021 00:26

I don't think Katie Holmes contract was up. I think her escape, aided by her father, was genuine and that Tom Cruise was blindsided by it.

Classica · 25/07/2021 00:27

Actually I've just remembered that he went out with Penelope Cruz for years.

EmeraldShamrock · 25/07/2021 00:33

I'm glad she got away, thankfully her family were able to reach her.
I loved her in Dawson's creek.

earthyfire · 25/07/2021 00:34

Hmm not too keen on him, watch a few of his interviews on youtube.

Bortles · 25/07/2021 00:39

Legend (the movie) before he got his teeth fixed!
Love watching A listers in films before they became all glossy, (Nick Cage's films are defined by his teeth, bad teeth = good film and vice versa)
But Cruise. It was when he fired his publicist and hired his sister instead that it all went to shit reputation-wise.

EmeraldShamrock · 25/07/2021 00:45

The scientology Church in Dublin advertises family day event's pre covid all welcome included face painting, meeting dinosaurs, children's games, all aimed at young families in affluent areas.
They've over 500 positive reviews from the Halloween and Christmas events they hold. HmmShock
Yes silly people attend for a day out I'd be scared.

Carrotinthesky · 25/07/2021 00:52

Completely agree. I was interested in it at the time, for one reason and another, and things did NOT go the way he'd planned. Or expected. He expected to keep the child within the fold. That did not happen, thanks be to whomsoever made sure it didn't.

I think people who have any interest should watch the docs and the news from the time, alongside the scientology (private yet leaked) media releases, before they begin to formulate an opinion. In my book, KH is a bloody hero to fight and get her child away from this massive monster. (Scientology, not necessarily TC) She's won where so many before her have failed.
Mission Impossible innit. But not for her. I admire her immensely for her grit, her fearlessness of the upper echelons of scientology and her success in extracting her child from its cloying grasp.

I actually don't think TC is not interested in seeing his child. I think perhaps he's just not allowed to.

Carrotinthesky · 25/07/2021 00:53

He did, but he couldn't marry her because she refused to join the gang.

Ugh. Haven't they bought one of the gorgeous houses on Merrion Square? Hopefully now that Ireland is emerging from the Catholic death grip very few people will think 'hmmm, might tether myself to that creepy crowd'. Sounds bloody expensive to be a Scientologist never mind anything else. A 5 euro note in a collection basket won't cut it.

Good for her! She's much better off back in Spain with that big beefy husband.
EmeraldShamrock · 25/07/2021 00:56

Yes - I don't know anyone who has been influenced by it.
Someone is paying in.
Like you say Ireland is very much removed from religion.
Though my gripe is they're opening a drug rehabilitation centre in Co.Meath which will involve their religious teaching no doubt.

Carrotinthesky · 25/07/2021 01:24

These bloody Spanish women! Inbetween her and Katie, they had another young Spanish actress who his promoters thought would be ideal to enhance his persona .Of course she was hugely flattered to be the chosen one and went with it for purposes of getting her name known. A romance with TC could launch her into the stratosphere.

She went along with it for a couple of months, maybe even might marry him, but then was presented with a contract (from the Church of Scientology) of what she could or couldn't do, what she was and wasn't allowed to say, goodness knows what the contract said, I'm not privy to it.

Top and bottom of it is, she said "No thanks, no chance, no way"

And disappeared happily back into obscurity.
Pretty sure some of the UK Z listers here would have signed it spit spot.

But not your Mediterranean Spanish Beauties. Oh, no, no, no.
Kick the narcissist into touch. It's What Katy Did. ( literary reference?)

Eesha · 25/07/2021 01:27

There are lots of stories about Nicole's creepy dad/BIL and their deaths where she came from a terrible world herself. After reading this, I did wonder if this is what Scientology has on her to make her not fight to see the children.

Missedopportunity · 25/07/2021 01:29

@TatianaBis.

I've read your posts and, honestly, I think maybe you're a little more invested in Tom than I am. 😄

I don't know what his contact arrangements are with his youngest child. I know his two older ones have spoken that they are close to him.
Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes joined scientology of their own free will and they both left of their own free will. I've never heard Nicole Kidman or Katie Holmes say anything negative about him. In fact, just last year, Nicole Kidman said she was very happy with him and was devastated when their marriage ended.
I'm not attracted to Tom Cruise, I just really like him and I've enjoyed most of his films, his later ones more than his early ones really. I love a good thriller or action movie.
You've seen on this thread that people who had contact with him, apart from a friend of someone, has had a positive experience of him. And Graham Norton wouldn't lie. Yeah, I love Tom Cruise.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 25/07/2021 01:33

He is so good an actor (from Interview with a vampire onwards) that I forget he is howling at the moon in real life.
He would be a dangerous fuck to be close to IMHO.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 25/07/2021 01:49

Him and Brad Pitt are in the same category for me, persona of perfection, but a bit odd.

Classica · 25/07/2021 01:49

@Carrotinthesky, the Spanish women seem to have been blessed with good sense! No number of introductions to Hollywood's top producers and top directors can be worth entangling yourself in Scientology's sticky web.

Katy Carr would have done the same Grin
