AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

Graham Norton is a sycophantic kiss arse who’ll flatter stars in hope they return as guests

TatianaBis · 24/07/2021 23:22

Who do you think has a better grasp of his character: Graham Norton & staff or Nicole and Katie?

Dolphin20 · 24/07/2021 23:22

I like him as an actor ever since I watched Top Gun. I also like to watch him as a show guest, except for the couch jumping outburst Grin.

"I love Tom Cruise. Graham Norton says he's his favourite celebrity because he's always so polite, helpful, never forgets the names of the staff and remembers details about them. He makes really enjoyable films. Yeah, I really like him."

Forgotten his daughter though hasn't he.

I don't know if he has or not. TBH he's not my friend or anything so I don't know what happens in his personal life. 🙂

BorderlineHappy · 24/07/2021 23:25

I think he just does the action stuff now to keep Scientology afloat. He pumps some money in to it.

He could have been a really great actor in some great roles.
Multiple Oscar winner but he traded it all in for that cult.
I bet they have some shit on him.

Ask yourself if you've ever seen them together since Katie and he split.

YouMadeABear · 24/07/2021 23:28

Christian Bale credits Tom Cruise as the inspiration on how he should play Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He said he saw TC on Letterman (or similar) and despite him being charming and laughing, he was utterly dead behind the eyes! Totally see that...

There's something unnerving. Like everyone around him is putting on a performance and playing along with the official "Tom is great" story. Nice guy Tom. But it doesn't feel real and the red danger light in my head starts flashing when he pops up on chat shows.

Well there’s nothing in the world that would separate me from my children, so what about Nicole’s character?
TatianaBis · 24/07/2021 23:31

Well there’s nothing in the world that would separate me from my children, so what about Nicole’s character?

So you know nothing about Scientology then.

Nicole was declared "A suppressive person" as per Scientology and the children were not allowed to see her.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/07/2021 23:33

It's a bit rum to think Katie Holmes turned her kid against him when the kid is really young - more likely the judge wasn't keen on the Scientology - and Holmes dad is a shit hot lawyer

Plus the kids who are against Kidman were adults before they turned against her so that's not him either

He's just got a weirdo religion (loads of nice people have weirdo religions) but is clearly a very likeable guy in real life

And his films are great (Live Die Repeat is a brilliant action movie, really top notch)

Meltinghere · 24/07/2021 23:34

@TatianaBis So, is he not allowed to see his daughter?

Something really odd about it all!

Classica · 24/07/2021 23:34

I'm surprised Christian Bale needed inspiration. Remember the leaked tantrum he had at some camera man on a film set. He is another man with issues.
hyperbole001 · 24/07/2021 23:34

People saying they don't rate his films have clearly not seen Rain man

LaurieFairyCake · 24/07/2021 23:35

Yes, he's not allowed to see her because of his religion (and the shit hot lawyer)

TatianaBis · 24/07/2021 23:35

Don't confuse religions with cults. Scientology is a cult.

Religions don't charge anything. Scientology charges the earth.

Summerdayshaze · 24/07/2021 23:36

Why hasn’t she said this publicly and shouted it from the rooftops then? Why wouldn’t you? If someone took my children off me and I wasn’t “allowed” to see them I’d tell the world.

Not being funny at all, but you’d think if this were true then the mother would be the first one telling anyone who’d listen?

Meltinghere · 24/07/2021 23:36

@LaurieFairyCake She must’ve felt very strongly to not even allow him access to her 😬wonder what he’d done

TatianaBis · 24/07/2021 23:37

@LaurieFairyCake

Yes, he's not allowed to see her because of his religion (and the shit hot lawyer)
He chooses not to see her because chooses to put his whacko cultic beliefs above his duty as a father.
TSSDNCOP · 24/07/2021 23:37

You have to wonder of all the characters you could play, why you'd ever pick to be Patrick Bateman.

Nohomemadecandles · 24/07/2021 23:37

Have you read Clive Barker's Coldheart Canyon?
I always wonder if that was based on Tom Cruise!

Horehound · 24/07/2021 23:38

He's good at his job but he's not a nice person.

TatianaBis · 24/07/2021 23:38

@Summerhaze not being funny but do your own research on Scientology and consider that you are not NK and have not ever tried taking on a very wealthy, mad and rather sinister cult.

Classica · 24/07/2021 23:38

Scientology doesn't take kindly to people bad mouthing it. If you've ever watched any documentaries on it you can see that they stalk people obsessively if they feel they're working against the cult. If I was Nicole Kidman I probably would be reluctant to shout anything from the rooftops too.

EspressoDoubleShot · 24/07/2021 23:43

@LaurieFairyCake

Elaborate upon not allowed to see her because of his religion There is no religious abstention or observation that’s bound in family law that means a father isn’t allowed to see his child
EmeraldShamrock · 24/07/2021 23:44

Why hasn’t she said this publicly and shouted it from the rooftops then? Why wouldn’t you? If someone took my children off me and I wasn’t “allowed” to see them I’d tell the world.
She was very vulnerable during that time, you'd never know what they have on her.
She is very dignified.
I thought the rulers forbid him from seeing Suri. How Katie changed with him, he took her best years.
She's lucky she escaped.
