AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

@Kanaloa

I find him so utterly creepy. Like a lizard got it’s one true wish to be a real man, and even though it’s walking around in its new man suit it’s still a lizard with no concept of human behaviour.
YESSSSSSSSSS!
southeastdweller · 24/07/2021 22:23

He's a good to great actor (Born on the Fourth of July, Rainman, Magnolia) but there's always been something off about him. I always wondered if he somehow screwed over Mimi Rogers's career for calling him a 'monk' in an interview a few years after their divorce.

DrDreReturns · 24/07/2021 22:24

I watched Collateral a few days ago. Great film, Jamie Foxx is the real star of that movie.

MrsRockAndRoll · 24/07/2021 22:25

@SanFranBear

Christian Bale credits Tom Cruise as the inspiration on how he should play Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. He said he saw TC on Letterman (or similar) and despite him being charming and laughing, he was utterly dead behind the eyes! Totally see that...

I do have to agree with the PP - love his films, but not in love with him anymore!

Oooh @SanFranBear I've never heard that quite before. Interesting!
Bouledeneige · 24/07/2021 22:29

He makes my skin crawl because he's clearly a control freak and totally inauthentic. He propositioned a male friend of mine at a gay club in the late 90s. All his marriages have been carefully managed contracts. he's so rich and powerful In Hollywood that he has been living a carefully managed (and litigated) lie. The Scientology is just one part of it.

MayflowerMaisie · 24/07/2021 22:36

This “good guy” persona is because he’s the public face of Scientology. They want to give people the idea they’re all great, friendly, normal people.
It’s all an act.

Classica · 24/07/2021 22:36

I do think it's interesting the contrast between being one of the leaders of this shadowy and destructive cult V his public image of always being charming to everyone.

SunshineCake · 24/07/2021 22:36

He turned up at Wimbledon. So many people turned to look and made stupid noises that it disrupted the game and disturbed the players. I just thought what a twat. He could easily have waited until it was change of ends.

YellowBellyCat · 24/07/2021 22:38

Katie Holmes had to have a reason for doing a bunk without telling him….which makes me suspect at the least he’s not a nice person and at the worst she had reason to be scared of him. The fact he has no relationship with Suri is odd. And hasn’t he turned his older kids against Nicole Kidman?

But he’s a good actor.

owlbethere · 24/07/2021 22:43

The fact he has nothing to do with his daughter is what sealed it for me.

Figgygal · 24/07/2021 22:48

Nope
Jerry maguire I’ll give him a couple Of the mission impossible films are ok but other than that He has no range every film he’s in he’s just Tom cruise saying stuff not the character anymore

TheRebelle · 24/07/2021 22:53

I’ve always liked Tom Cruise, even though he’s clearly bonkers he’s likeable with it, the same way I like my friend who’s a member of (what I think is) a bonkers religion, we get on really well but when she talks about anything to do with her church I just smile and nod.

Meltinghere · 24/07/2021 22:56

What’s the secret with him? Why the fake wives etc..it’s odd

Cherrysoup · 24/07/2021 22:58

I always refer to the Top Gun sex scene as lizard lovemaking

Me and my dh were shouting ‘You’re doing it wrong’ at the screen last time we watched it. The whole tongue dipping thing, euw!! 🤮

I find his personal life very bizarre, Scientology is utterly batshit, some very dodgy practices going on there. The action hero thing is a bit much given his age, bit like Liam Neeson, not very believable anymore.

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/07/2021 22:58

He is creepy but he’s done some brilliant movies. He’s amazing as Stacee Jax in Rock of Ages

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/07/2021 22:59

The Tom cruise Scientology episode suggests he’s in the closet

Summerdayshaze · 24/07/2021 23:03

Love him, despite everything. He’s a magnificent actor. He should have got an Oscar for Rainman. Possibly the last true movie star.

Cherryrainbow · 24/07/2021 23:04

He is a great actor, and has made many great movies, I have quite a few in my dvd collection. I've also enjoyed quite a few of his interviews on things like Graham Norton- he doesn't seem to take himself seriously, engages with the other guests with genuine interest in what they do, seems polite and charming. A lot of people he has worked with have said things like he's bought stuff for crew, remembers everyone's name, he has done charity work and all sorts of good deeds.

I find it quite easy to keep the actor or actress as a person seperate to the work they do - sure they could be an AH but many work places have people who suck but are talented at what they do.

Dullardmullard · 24/07/2021 23:05

@lunar1

I have a relative who has worked for him on several projects. They don't have a bad word to say about him professionally, in an industry where employers can be notoriously horrendous.

He's very involved and supportive and treats everyone well, he's very well liked as a boss.

Meltinghere · 24/07/2021 23:05

@HasaDigaEebowai I never got that vibe..but not sure what vibe!
Which Scientology episode?

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/07/2021 23:07

Which Scientology episode?

Sorry, typo. I meant to type the Tom Cruise Scientology episode of South Park

Dullardmullard · 24/07/2021 23:10

Is it not his own production company that produces all his movies these days.

Doesn’t that say it all really.

Plus turning Nicole against their kids plus the gag order on her
Katie leaving for another state and getting full custody of their child

Both I’ll bet will have horror stories to tell no doubt.

NoYOUbekind · 24/07/2021 23:15

@Kanaloa wins the internet with this comment.

I also think he tries too hard. When he's on the couch he's researched everyone so that when they mention a thing, he's like 'oh yeah, I do that thing too.'

Like if you were on Graham Norton because you were the Klingon language consultant on a new Star Trek film, GN would throw to Tom Cruise who would speak to you in perfect Klingon. It's all pre-planned and completely un-natural.

TatianaBis · 24/07/2021 23:19

@Missedopportunity

I love Tom Cruise. Graham Norton says he's his favourite celebrity because he's always so polite, helpful, never forgets the names of the staff and remembers details about them. He makes really enjoyable films. Yeah, I really like him.
Forgotten his daughter though hasn't he.
mygenericusername · 24/07/2021 23:19

My BIL was his driver when he was making a movie 3/4 years ago.

The nicest guy apparently that treats staff very well.

Such a shame that he’s associated with Scientology.
