AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

@CatherineAragon

I would LOVE to know the real story about why he dumped Nicole out of the blue. I think she has had to swear silence in return for getting on with her life unhindered.
Yes i believe he served papers just before ten years of marriage. I would like to know was divorce not on the cards at all, were they getting ok but he just thought, next! Like she was a mobile phone contract he didnt want to get locked in to.
CatherineAragon · 25/07/2021 11:57

@southeastdweller

I heard (third hand) that NK had an alleged affair in 2000 with a certain co-star.
I think this was just a tabloid rumour. She was pregnant with Tome child when he left her.
CatherineAragon · 25/07/2021 11:59

@PrettyLittleFlies

How do you KNOW she had an affair?

PearlFriday · 25/07/2021 12:01

Really? So he divorced her after a decade of trying to get pregnant when she was pregnant. I hadnt realised the timing was so awful. Money meant more to him than allowing nk to have a stress free pregnancy

PrettyLittleFlies · 25/07/2021 12:01

Oh I can't say much without outing my friend but let's say she worked very closely with them both and was party to the affair. I knew this before the divorce was announced, it wasn't a surprise to anyone who was in their circle.

PrettyLittleFlies · 25/07/2021 12:02

It was 2000/2001

TatianaBis · 25/07/2021 12:43

@hyperbole001

I also remember reading that Katie Holmes was selected as a potential girlfriend from a shortlist that included Scarlett Johannson. You need to go through a thorough interview process to be Tom's gf apparently...
Was it SJ - if not it was another Hollywood actress who told of going on a date with him, just him and her she thought, and after the meal he opened a door to a whole bunch of Scientologists he wanted her to meet.

She left, and never saw him again.

TatianaBis · 25/07/2021 12:46

@Missedopportunity

I've read your posts and, honestly, I think maybe you're a little more invested in Tom than I am.

🤣

Interested in Scientology. Seen precisely 1 Tom Cruise film Top Gun as he’s a creepy lizard weirdo.

Geamhradh · 25/07/2021 12:57

At the risk of going all "I know somebody who said", I know someone whose relative worked for the divorce lawyers and everyone knew several years beforehand when the papers would be served. They were drawn up when they got married and NK was supposedly perfectly happy with the arrangement.
The only wife I think maybe was unaware of her arranged status was Mimi, but wasn't it her who introduced him to Scientology?

Ijsbear · 25/07/2021 13:07
@FadoFado. But if they're happy in scientology, why would they want to leave and why should they?
Very few people are truly happy when they have to tread carefully what they say and do.

And even fewer people who have a loving mum are happy that they aren't allowed to see her because of religious rules. It goes against the most basic human instincts.

We get it that you like Tom Cruise, but tying yourself in knots to justify even adult kids not being allowed to see their parents is just that, tying yourself in knots.

spongebath · 25/07/2021 13:15

I thought it was said that not long before he filed for divorce they had had an anniversary party where he had stood and said how much he loved her etc and she did too. They apparently did a big gushy scene.

spongebath · 25/07/2021 13:18

Oh they had renewed their wedding vows

spongebath · 25/07/2021 13:24
@spongebath Google Nicole's dad and the stories about satanism/cults and Fiona Barnett. Both her dad and BIL died suspiciously.
Ooh I will!

peaceanddove · 25/07/2021 13:37

My friend is American and was staying in the same hotel as TC a few years ago. She isn't a particular fan of his at all but she said you cannot take your eyes off him if he's in the room (yes, even though he's really short etc).

RightYesButNo · 25/07/2021 13:38

Meh. I think this article bridges the gap between HARD NEWS and gossip rag. In a legal deposition, Tom Cruise stated that yes, Katie Holmes said Scientology and fear of Scientology was part of why she was ending their marriage. The purpose of the deposition? He was suing some straight gossip rags (In Touch and a sister publication) because they claimed he had abandoned Siri. He said he hadn’t, but his side fell apart when it turned out he hadn’t seen her for 110 days straight, even though he was able to take 24 hrs to fly across the world for a Scientology event. The same magazine (according to this article) reported a few years later that he now hadn’t seen Suri for 1,000 days; he didn’t try to sue them for saying that. A good (but long-ish) read:
www.thedailybeast.com/is-tom-cruise-estranged-from-suri?ref=scroll

It seems to me the answer is clear: he chose Scientology over his child. If you want to support that, fine. If you don’t, fine. There are plenty of actors and directors doing terrible things and still being famous and beloved. Shrug.

Dobbyisahouseelf · 25/07/2021 13:52

My celebrity crush back in the 80's and I still think he looks good for his age but all that couch jumping and scientology weirdness has put me off.

I loved Dawsons Creek and I think Katie Holmes definitely saw the light when she left with Suri.

Qwerty789 · 25/07/2021 15:40

@EmeraldShamrock

The scientology Church in Dublin advertises family day event's pre covid all welcome included face painting, meeting dinosaurs, children's games, all aimed at young families in affluent areas. They've over 500 positive reviews from the Halloween and Christmas events they hold. HmmShock Yes silly people attend for a day out I'd be scared.
I think the Scientologists will never get Irish people, we're too bloody sceptical and have only just got rid of the stranglehold of another relgion/cult. We're happy to have a free day out on anyones dime but face painting and a 99 isn't gonna get us giving our money to the bloody Scientologists!!

I just don’t believe that. Nicoke was devastated by the divorce and has talked about that for years. It took her a long time to get over him. There was a recording of a private phone conversation between Nicole and Tom two or three years beforehand in which she is angry about the lack of effort he is putting in and how tired he is all the time. She describes their marriage as ‘hanging by a thread’. He is apologising and trying desperately to placate her. I think they truly loved one another for a long time, but something went very wrong and he just snapped and walked out.
Grinch48 · 25/07/2021 16:43

I only like him in Collateral because I think he played himself and he died at the end 😂

Kanaloa · 25/07/2021 18:48

Happy to see so many agree that Tom Cruise is in fact a giant lizard in skin.

I had no idea the portrayal of Patrick Bateman was based on him as I haven’t seen the film - it’s funny as Tom Cruise is actually sort of in the book. Patrick meets and chats to him in an elevator, telling him how much he loved him in the movie ‘Bartender.’

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2021 18:52

I don't understand the 'giant lizard' thing at all.

Kanaloa · 25/07/2021 19:00

@Sparklingbrook

I don’t know he’s just always given me lizardy vibes. Like if you pulled his hair firmly his face would slide off scooby doo style to reveal a lizard face beneath. I think it’s because he’s so fake.

Sparklingbrook · 25/07/2021 19:08

Oh ok. I don't really know what lizardy vibes are. But maybe in RL he would be perfectly normal.
Maybe actors are a bit fake. They have to fake being other people for a living after all.

PearlFriday · 25/07/2021 19:29

@emeraldshamrock i wondered if that scientology place was still going. It is in Tallaght I believe. I agree with @qwerty789 , i dont think many irish people will willingly hand over cash to them and we arent looking for more religions or cults, but, it still worries me that it's there. They could have covert ways of targetting lonely people.
They might gatther together groups of 50 something women who want to make friends. Make them feel part of a social group. Or groups set up for widowers. Or groups set up with male mentors for the single mothers of sons. They mightn't be obviously scientology groups. That might be something you find out the first time you're asked for money but after the group has become yr world.

TSSDNCOP · 25/07/2021 20:13

Got to be honest Pearl, that sounds like a lot of regular churches.
