… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea I'm not sure even that Scottish "comedian" who got sacked off HIGNFY (can't remember his name) would that tasteless.
It's one thing to court controversy and I understand why some people choose that as their persona but laughing at someone's death ? There's no way that's funny, edgy or anything other than deeply distasteful.

TowandaForever · 21/07/2021 01:19

This is not isolated incident. He's definitely got issues!!!!

dont follow him if you dont like what he said. its like pulling a chair up to a table and complaining about their conversation. the comment sounds awful btw. but complaining about tweets you chose to read reminds me of Ricky Gervais

Is the problem with the tweet really that we've read it?
Isn't the problem more with the fact that it's unimaginably cruel and spiteful to write Ha ha ha ha ha about somebody dying at the age of 34? Yes, we could all choose not to read it, but the point surely is that somebody who behaves in that way should be called to account for it.

silentpool · 21/07/2021 01:37

Could people stop calling for others to be cancelled? They should have to defend their views in public, not be arbitrarily silenced. Snacks of the Morality Police IMO.
That's got to be the most illogical argument I've ever heard.

You can't find something offensive unless you were there/ were following someone?!

PumpkinWitch · 21/07/2021 01:40

He is not going to be cancelled because he is a privileged white man. As previous posters have said look at what Boris Johnson gets away with.

I don’t think cancel culture where people write to someone’s employer demanding they sack them and that no one should should be encouraged. That is just bullying.

It it vile to be cheering poor Dawn’s death. I do think that someone at the Times should have a word with him about what he posted.

tomorrowalready · 21/07/2021 01:46

I had never heard of Dawn Foster before reading of her her. Having looked her up, I am sorry I had not read any of her work, she seemed to be a valuable journalist. I am more sorry that I knew who Giles Coren is, I usually make an effort to avoid anything to do with him. All his commets on this young woman's death reveal, as so many of his other comments reveal, what a cess pit his mind must be. I would say I am sorry for his relatives to have to be associated with him but I can't.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 01:55
Well sure.

If I employed someone who said the things he's said and esp if they were in the public eye then I would sack them. Most companies would do the same.

He can say what he likes.

The fact he seems to still get employment. On the telly? Not sure what he's up to say the mo. That's very strange.

Looking at this thread and I'm just going on the stuff here.

Fake account to post antisemitism
Sexy daughter (I read that piece it was bleurgh)
Gleeful about a young woman dying
More???

Certain publications would not consider that a barrier to employing him ok.

I would be dismayed to see him on the BBC though esp on the family type stuff he's done in the past.

I mean if no lines are crossed there to be fronting those types of progs. Then that sends a pretty dodgy message IMO

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 01:57

Would you think that his variety of comments should be no barrier to him appearing as a host on the sort of family friendly progs he's done in the past?

I'm not into cancelling as such but consequences are a separate issue.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 01:58

Dunno how I managed to get another posters video at end of my post!

theThreeofWeevils · 21/07/2021 02:38

He had a point about the subbing, however obnoxious he might be.

NiceGerbil · 21/07/2021 02:48

What is subbing?

Sorry must have missed something.

adeleh · 21/07/2021 03:12

The row he had with the sub editors, I think. He was way over the top there.

JemimaTab · 21/07/2021 03:14

Private Eye has had a pop at him in the past too for alleged bullying behaviour to juniors when he was working at (I think) the Times.
And yes Alan Coren came from a working class background. But he went to Oxford, went into academia for a few years, and then became a very successful editor/media personality. I believe his wife was a consultant eye surgeon. So I imagine their children had a fairly comfortable home life, very different from that of their parents’ childhoods. Alan also got Giles his first job. So let’s not pretend Giles isn’t privileged.

cariadlet · 21/07/2021 03:20

@theThreeofWeevils

He had a point about the subbing, however obnoxious he might be.

The thing that struck me in his rant to the subs (apart from the foot-stamping, don't you know how important I am, entitled attitude) was that he didn't bother to capitalise the I apart from the beginning of sentences. It seemed a bit ironic; he was whingeing about what a talented writer he was but he couldn't be bothered to do something that we teach 5 year olds to do. It made him look quite illiterate.

I'm glad that I came across this thread. I was vaguely aware of him as a restaurant critic but hadn't realised what an obnoxious twat he was.

stuckdownahole · 21/07/2021 03:23

I didn't like Dawn Foster's journalism. She seemed relentlessly cross and rather hyperbolic, a typical Guardianista forever howling about how awful the Tories are but never addressing the question of why they keep getting voted in.

Am I glad she's dead? Fuck no. She had family, friends, people who loved her ...

She said a mean thing about Giles Coren and he would have been entitled to say an equally mean thing back but rejoicing in her death is not equal!

Also, given his occupation, how come he couldn't fashion a brilliantly witty comeback at the time?

Comedians need to make their audience like them before they can make them laugh. Giles might have just punctured his own balloon, not sure he will need 'cancelling.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/07/2021 03:59

@MinnieJackson

skwawkbox.org/2021/07/20/viles-third-best-coren-dismantled-after-foul-tweets-about-dawn-fosters-death/ He his disgusting. I used to enjoy back in time for dinner. The way he writes about his daughter, and looking at her 'plump lips while she drinks a coke...possibly the sexiest holiday I've had'
Ah good - was going to post this link but see Minnie got to it first!
BrozTito · 21/07/2021 04:16

This could be an interesting thread if the slow AF mail readers hadnt been trigged with the CC phrase. Is he still in his really weird marraige? Read the tantrum he had via emails, the guardian published it. Hes the essence of small dick energy.

BrozTito · 21/07/2021 04:18

And why is everything 'bullying' now?

MilesOfSand · 21/07/2021 04:21

@Bryonyshcmyony

And *@Classica* s post is a great example of social media bullying Luckily I couldn't give a fuck what you think of me or my posts. Sorry to disappoint

Do you know Giles Coren personally? If not, I suggest that you try to get to a place in life where the 10 year old tweets of random C list celebrities don't anger you quite so much.

Or the place in life where the opinions of strangers on the opinions of 10 year old tweets of random celebrities don’t anger you quite so much. 🤷‍♀️
SteppinOutwithMyBaby · 21/07/2021 04:50

@FaceyRomford "Alan Coren was a comic genius up there with P G Wodehouse and Evelyn Waugh."

"Punch" sparkled like a comedic diamond under Alan Coren's editorship (plus William Davies' earlier editorship).
