The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

That’s the thing with these odious people - Johnson’s another one - they write these appalling things apparently completely forgetting that the internet keeps them alive forever. There’s no chance of losing them in the mists of time any more.

Interesting comparison with the equally awful Toby Young. I'm ashamed to say that I had to google who TY's father was. After reading about him, I feel that I really should have known of him already. He seems to have been both an admirable and a likeable person.

I wonder what Alan Coren and Michael Young would think if they could see their sons now.

I just copied and pasted all of that from a blog. He’s not the acquaintance of any of my friends that I know of. At least I hope none of my friends are friends with someone like that!

I really like Esther Walker, Giles Coren's wife. She writes really well on her blogs, and seems funny, sharp and nice. So I suppose I feel a bit invested myself? 🤔 Oh dear

I detest Toby Young and his attitudes, but so far as I'm aware, even he did not gloat viciously or say 'HA HA HA' at an opponent's early death.

Not to derail, but just read Young’s wiki entry. If it’s accurate, he failed even to make his BBB offer to study at Oxford - but daddy phoned the Admissions tutor at Brazenose and he was offered a place.

Ha, just imagining if the rest of us (of whom I imagine there are a fair few on Mumsnet) had all failed to make their conditional offers for Oxbridge.

For my part, my non-famous and unconnected father’s phoning up my college’s Admissions Tutor would have made precisely fuck-all difference, I imagine.

I very much dislike the term 'cancel culture' and all the accusations and blaming that happens around it.

At the same time, I think moving from saying "I am not going to read Giles Coren anymore because..." to "No one should read Giles Coren anymore because... and anyone who disagrees will get lumped in with GC and attacked mercilessly" has been very damaging.

State your own views about him, leave others to theirs.

I think upthread some posters were comparing what's happening to Giles to what's happened to JKR.

I think that the people who target JKR with false accusations of pedophilia & send her death threats are similar to Giles's behaviour particularly when they claim to be the victim in the situation & everyone else is just being mean & ganging up on them. Complete lack of self awareness & pure hypocrisy.

If JKR sales dropped dramatically for whatever reason then off course her publishers would drop her just like actors & musicians lose films & contracts. You don't even have to say anything offensive people can just decide they no longer like what you do.

@RaquelOak just like "be kind", "don't like , don't look" generally only goes one way.

I think he said some nasty shit about JKR as well. I wonder does he have a problem with all women, or is it just talented, female writers from the working class.🧐
