… to ask why Giles Coren hasn’t been cancelled yet?

The vile Dawn Foster tweets ffs. But he seems Teflon coated. He will never be cancelled. Three fucking columns a week … a pissing radio show, albeit on Times Radio, which surely no one listens to. I would love to be proved wrong. Absolutely love to be.

Who in the world can be said to be a truly good kind person? Noone is an actual saint

I think there is a middle ground no?

Piglet89 · 21/07/2021 17:40

He also clearly thinks he’s a really brilliant writer, which is somewhat wide of the mark. He writes reasonably well but, let’s be honest, he got his break through clear nepotism. His prose is, quite simply, nothing special.

Marina Hyde writes about a million times better than he does and also manages not to behave like an arrogant prick.

RaquelOak · 21/07/2021 17:41

I just cancelled my Times subscription that I’ve had for over a decade as I don’t want to contribute to Giles Coren. What a vile thing to gloat over the death of a 33 year old. The lady on the phone said “is this because of the Tweets?”. She she’d spent all day cancelling subscriptions from people about this. She offered me a 90% discount for the next 6 months, but I said no thanks. I said I’d restart my subscription once they get a new columnist and that it was a pity because I do like reading Dolly Alderton.

gollyh · 21/07/2021 17:44

I wonder if he'll be forced to apologise

Piglet89 · 21/07/2021 17:46

Well done you @RaquelOak

That’s really the only consequence the Times might possibly understand - their customers taking action that’ll hit them in the bottom line. I think that’s the most likely thing to get Coren into trouble (not common decency, sadly).

gollyh · 21/07/2021 17:50

I had no idea he tweeted himself abuse, honestly some people need to just step away from SM.

ArabellaPilkington · 21/07/2021 17:51

When I cancelled my Times subscription primarily because of them backing Cummings after the eye test debacle I was also asked if it was because of that - again they'd had loads off the back of it.

I said yeah - plus Giles.

romatheroamer · 21/07/2021 17:53

Well I like the Saturday Times so impossible to avoid column in the main paper plus restaurant review. And them in their kitchen coping with lockdown. Sometimes amusing, OK. Not personally an anti-posho (your shoulder starts to hurt after a while, as in chip) but did get fed up with references to the trouble and bother of their second home in the Cotswolds..when many can't afford one home.
Something I read gave the impression of rather remote, very career -driven parents...nannies, au pairs when they were young.

Piglet89 · 21/07/2021 17:59

This makes perfect sense to me: parents too busy and concerned with their careers to bother to put the hard graft into rearing him properly. This is the result; a man seemingly emotionally stalled at around the age of 7.

BrozTito · 21/07/2021 18:16

Gollyh theyre just arguing for the sake of it. Usual contrarians. Remember we were told they were doing a countrywide search for the Harry potter main child actors, then just chose london based kids of loaded parents connected to the industry who couldnt act?yeah, no nepotism here.

God, yes I remember that. It was really bad!
Piglet89 · 21/07/2021 18:18

@BrozTito I didn’t know that. Also makes sense. Emma Watson was PROPERLY atrocious.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/07/2021 18:30

He has a lot of sock puppets.🙄 It's the fact that he specifically made the tweet antisemitic that makes it worse. Surely a great writer such as him could have abused himself without contributing to the fears of the Jewish community.

SnakeyTakey · 21/07/2021 18:35

I've just looked at this article about his anti-semitic sock puppet account. Wow, that is some ugly shit. And he's admitted to it, so it's not just some strong suspicions people have. It's established fact.

Clymene · 21/07/2021 18:40

I think I've had it with my Times sub. I've kept it going because of Janice but I really don't want to be contributing to Knight or Coren.

If they were doing anything other than offering opinions, id feel less conflicted. But I am literally paying for them to have unpleasant opinions and that doesn't feel right to me.

Hopdathelf · 21/07/2021 18:40

He seems a very odd, very fragile character. I feel very sorry for any staff they employ.

Orf1abc · 21/07/2021 18:41

We need to stop using the term cancel culture and start calling it what it is, not employing hateful people.

RaquelOak · 21/07/2021 18:53

@romatheroamer Well, if you call up and say you’re cancelling your subscription because you’re appalled at Giles Coren. They’ll offer you a 90% discount for 6 months. I declined it and said I’d rejoin once they employed a new columnist who wasn’t such a vile human being. But if you intend to remain a subscriber it could save you some £££.

mustlovegin · 21/07/2021 19:09

Good, you can cancel your subscriptions individually, and not act as a bullying gang.

said I’d rejoin once they employed a new columnist

Yes, they will make an effort to hire many columnists who are bland, mellow and tow the line to ensure they always agree with your opinions so that nothing upsets the fragile and immaculate balance in your echo chamber Hmm

SnakeyTakey · 21/07/2021 19:16

Why get pissy because someone has cancelled their subscription? You're so sensitive.

gollyh · 21/07/2021 19:18

Good, you can cancel your subscriptions individually, and not act as a bullying gang.

Why is it bullying though? If people don't want to pay for something because they disagree with the behaviour of someone who is selling their work why shouldn't they stop paying?

Clymene · 21/07/2021 19:18

I honestly don't think I've seen the word bullying used so inappropriately so many times in a single thread.

Perhaps Giles has set up MN socks.

RaquelOak · 21/07/2021 19:19

@mustlovegin TBH I don’t think Giles Coren is a very good columnist though. He just goes on and on about how he has a Land Rover Defender and his children being at private prep schools. Is that really such an achievement or very interesting? He’s obviously a deeply troubled, extremely bitter and vindictive man. And he is very short. Definite small d* energy there. I’ve seen him around Kentish Town where we both live. I often used to flick through the Saturday Times and it’s myriad supplements and put it straight into the recycling bin. I love the FT Weekend though and that’s more than enough reading material. I was actually meaning to cancel my Times subscription for ages.

SnakeyTakey · 21/07/2021 19:21

He absolutely would set up accounts on MN and defend himself loudly on threads. And nod in agreement at those who stuck up for him and tantrum at those who saw him as an overgrown brat of limited talents.
