How do I find out her name?

In the grand scheme of life this isn't a major problem. But it's a little embarrassing.

We moved house in April last year so have been here a little over a year. The next door neighbour introduced herself in the first few weeks and was so lovely and friendly. She obviously would have told me her name at that point. Anyway, I've forgotten it 🙈

It's more and more awkward with each conversation. We see each other a lot and chat over the garden fence. I had a baby earlier this year and she was so interested in my pregnancy asking for updates on baby's arrival etc, and coos over baby every time I'm outside with her. Basically, I feel as though I have developed quite a lovely friendship with my neighbour over the past year or so. But I have no clue what her name is 😂

And now it feels like it's gone too far for me to ask, if that makes sense? If someone you'd been chatting to for the best part of a year suddenly said "sorry, what's your name again?" you'd be pretty offended right?

My question is ... how the hell do I find out her name without offending her?!

You could ask how it’s spelt but would be awkward if it was something like Pam 😂

kimlo · 16/07/2021 11:01

Hope that she's not in one day and you take in a delivery for her.

Join the local facebook page and hope she's on it.

Or just move.

Lockheart · 16/07/2021 11:03

Give her your phone number. When she texts / calls, pretend you don't know who it is and ask.

TokyoSushi · 16/07/2021 11:03

I think you're going to have to wait until Christmas! Send them a card with just the message, no to, and hope she sends one back! Grin

Otherwise you're going to have to ask her!

This happened to me once at a baby group, it was a year and then we all went back to work, absolutely lovely lady, never did find out her name!

Laufeythejust · 16/07/2021 11:04

Christmas cards (although it’s quite a wait!). We wrote ours and addressed it ‘to all at number 50’ and they sent one back addressed the same but with all their names on.

MargotHeggerty · 16/07/2021 11:05

Get her number
Input it to WhatsApp or Facebook

Her profile should appear and hopefully if via WhatsApp her name is her actuall name like "Julie" and not "Mrs smith" or "cat mumma"

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/07/2021 11:05

I do understand your problem, I've been there. Is there another neighbour you can ask?

Ijustlikedthename · 16/07/2021 11:06

Wait until she sends you Christmas card! Assuming she celebrates Christmas

SE13Mummy · 16/07/2021 11:06

If I were your neighbour I wouldn't be at all offended if you asked my name after a year! Just say to her, "I'm really embarrassed but I've completely forgotten your name.." what's the worst that could happen?

Winniewonka · 16/07/2021 11:07

Do you know any of your other neighbours? If so you next time you see them you could say "Hi, hope you don't mind me asking but the woman who lives next door to me, is she called Emma or Helen?" They will then say and maybe have a little laugh "Neither, it's Caroline!"
You laugh too and say "Oh, I'm dreadful with names"

Shamoo · 16/07/2021 11:07

Ask your postman!

Sarahlou63 · 16/07/2021 11:08

Ask for her email address, or ask her to friend you on FB

Babyghirl · 16/07/2021 11:08

@sillysituation
Ask her has she got fb so you can add her and ask her what name she uses, or drop by for a cuppa hoping there's a letter lying around with her name on it lol. Or if she has a partner ask him when he going in to the house is she in give her a wee shout for e hoping he shouts her name at the door so you hear him.

romdowa · 16/07/2021 11:09

Ask her name and then when she tell you say "oh I know that! I meant your surname" 🤣🤣

I know, I'm being silly I think! I just really don't want to offend her as she's so lovely!

It's also made worse by the fact that she remembers my name as she often addresses me by it when I'm outside, eg "Hi (name), how's things? How are you getting on?" Etc .... I just sort of go "oh hi!! Yes I'm good thanks, you?" It's just so awkward ... wish I hadn't let it get this far without asking her again 😂

Google the address? If she runs a business or has ever applied for planning permission it should be there?

Go to your local library and ask for the electoral register for your area and then look up your street - she will be listed

TuesdayRuby · 16/07/2021 11:13

Invite a friend round, hang around in the garden. Wait til neighbour comes out. Ask your friend to march up and introduce herself “hi, I’m Wendy”.
Then lurk around and wait for the answer!

I do this all the time for my husband who always forgets peoples names Grin

sillysituation · 16/07/2021 11:13

It's become more awkward recently as she's said if I ever need anyone to look after baby for half an hour while i have a shower or something when DH is at work, don't hesitate to ask etc. But I'm thinking how the hell can I take her up on that without knowing her name - so embarrassing 😂

If you want to know enough to pay, you should be able to find out at 192.com

Saidtoomuch · 16/07/2021 11:14

Sorry, but the only way out of this is to move house! 😉

Yes get here phone number

TroysMammy · 16/07/2021 11:15

Have a look on Next Door. If she's signed up you can see the names of people on your street. It won't tell you which number but a name may ring a bell.
