How do I find out her name?

In the grand scheme of life this isn't a major problem. But it's a little embarrassing.

We moved house in April last year so have been here a little over a year. The next door neighbour introduced herself in the first few weeks and was so lovely and friendly. She obviously would have told me her name at that point. Anyway, I've forgotten it 🙈

It's more and more awkward with each conversation. We see each other a lot and chat over the garden fence. I had a baby earlier this year and she was so interested in my pregnancy asking for updates on baby's arrival etc, and coos over baby every time I'm outside with her. Basically, I feel as though I have developed quite a lovely friendship with my neighbour over the past year or so. But I have no clue what her name is 😂

And now it feels like it's gone too far for me to ask, if that makes sense? If someone you'd been chatting to for the best part of a year suddenly said "sorry, what's your name again?" you'd be pretty offended right?

My question is ... how the hell do I find out her name without offending her?!

@3scape

Send in a friend. When you've got a friend round shove them out the door when you know she's in the garden. They say oh hi, I'm x sorry sillysituation told me your name but I forgot, lovely to meet you x then you go out and have a lovely chat together.
This is a bloody brilliant idea. 🏆

If I were your neighbour and you asked my name after a year I would find it absolutely hilarious. I don’t think it’s uncommon - I chat to my neighbours all the time but have no idea what most of their names are!

ElephantOfRisk · 16/07/2021 12:37

Wait until the baby is old enough and train them to say to everyone "what's your name?" then wait for the reply :)

Doorhandleghost · 16/07/2021 12:37

They are all called numbers - when bent DD asks who was that she gets “that’s number 27” 😂

tricky29 · 16/07/2021 12:37

Ask your postman?

I am on the on the other side of this where I strongly suspect that two school mums haven’t remembered my name but I know there’s. I’m never too sure whether to drop name hints, to alleviate their discomfort.

Playing the long game...

everybloodyusername · 16/07/2021 12:47

then just accepted being called John........
I got a birthday card from them, signed Karen and John.

😂😂

Trying to locate her via her husband on Facebook/ the local Facebook page could be a good idea. Assuming she is on there in her actual name!

This happened to me - I use my middle name on FB, got invited to an event along with DH. They'd all obviously totally forgotten my name but looked me up and proceeded to call me "Alice" all night. I figured it out right away but suddenly in the middle of dinner DH announced "what's going on? Why is everyone calling you Alice??"
It was cringe.

WhitePhantom · 16/07/2021 12:47

Been there, done that... When you don't have your phone with you, just ask her to send you a text with her name so that you can save it later to your contacts.

ElephantOfRisk · 16/07/2021 12:48

Our nearby neighbours used to send us a christmas card every year to Amy, Oscar, Greg and Ikea. Those are not our names, none are correct. We just used to send our's from all at No6 just to keep it going. We regularly spoke to these people but now they've moved. I have 2 of them as friends on Facebook and did have whilst we were getting the cards. I've no idea whether they thought I was someone different to Amy at No6 Grin

ArnoldJudasRimmer · 16/07/2021 12:49

Wait for a parcel to be delivered to her house, intercept the delivery person and tell them she isn't at home but you'll take it in... Then look at the name on the label. 😁

I'm not really sure what you could actually do, but I wouldn't be offended if it were me and you asked me. I'll admit, we were in the same situation a while back and we only found their names out after they sent us a Christmas card and put "at number xx" after their names!

Please tell me that wasn't a typo and they really did think you'd called your child "Ikea" Grin
everybloodyusername · 16/07/2021 12:50

Turn your Bluetooth on near her and see if your up

everybloodyusername · 16/07/2021 12:51

Bloody hell.

See if your phone discovers 'Pams IPhone'

SarahBellam · 16/07/2021 12:51

He name is Pam now.

Drivingmeupthewall · 16/07/2021 12:52

Ask the postman. 👍🏻

Not a typo...I'm not giving all the real names as far too outing, but they are reasonably close. Ikea is actually Keir (with a different spelling)

brittleheadgirl · 16/07/2021 12:53

My mums neighbours called her Dorothy for over 30 years, she gave up correcting them after they first moved to the street and ended up going along with it.
They even signed Christmas cards with it, just to save confusion/embarrassment Grin

Ohanaa · 16/07/2021 12:54

My son gets a special needs school bus to get to school.

The escort has been calling him the wrong name for over 2 years now. It’s very similar but she’s added in a extra letter. Iv signed cards and I call him by his actual name if I need to in front of her. She’s still not realised. I don’t have the heart to tell her Grin

CorianderBee · 16/07/2021 12:54

I had a mate at uni that I and everyone else who knew us called Adrian. After over two years of friendship the poor boy finally spoke up and revealed that his name was Lewis!!

We still call him Adrian... he's even changed his Facebook to Adrian-Lewis 😂
