How do I find out her name?

In the grand scheme of life this isn't a major problem. But it's a little embarrassing.

We moved house in April last year so have been here a little over a year. The next door neighbour introduced herself in the first few weeks and was so lovely and friendly. She obviously would have told me her name at that point. Anyway, I've forgotten it 🙈

It's more and more awkward with each conversation. We see each other a lot and chat over the garden fence. I had a baby earlier this year and she was so interested in my pregnancy asking for updates on baby's arrival etc, and coos over baby every time I'm outside with her. Basically, I feel as though I have developed quite a lovely friendship with my neighbour over the past year or so. But I have no clue what her name is 😂

And now it feels like it's gone too far for me to ask, if that makes sense? If someone you'd been chatting to for the best part of a year suddenly said "sorry, what's your name again?" you'd be pretty offended right?

My question is ... how the hell do I find out her name without offending her?!

We had this with a neighbour who thought DH was called Steve (he isn’t). We didn’t know the neighbour’s name either, so just referred to him as “The man who thinks you’re called Steve.”
(We didn’t actually address him thus, it was just amongst ourselves)

If she might own her house do a land registry search, her name will be on there. Costs about £4 but I’d think it was worth it.

Glovesick · 17/07/2021 22:49

Weave a story in about a friend who had 4 people with the same name in her class at school. Then ask if she had anyone with the same name in her class. Hopefully she will say " yes, there was another Pam"

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 17/07/2021 23:00

I’m on the other end of this, and I know I’ve told her but she doesn’t retain it 😂

She called me Rachel for a while (nowhere near my name! It’s not English and has one syllable). Now I actually look forward to Christmas cards to see what approximation of our names she’s gone for.

Now we change her name around, it’s a three letter name too 😂

MinnieJackson · 17/07/2021 23:22

I love this 😂 one of our neighbours gave us a Christmas card to 'Keith, Kitty and Lauren' nowhere near our names lol and we'd chatted, and shared a cul de sac for 13 years!

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 17/07/2021 23:59

What Tuesday ruby said.
Get a friend round who is hood at chatting to people. Get her to Lurk and pounce when you are inside. She introduces herself and asks your neighbour her name. Sorted!

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 18/07/2021 00:00

And when she tells you.. put it in out phone so you don't forget. I put names in notes under "n" for neighbours 🤣

Thisismyrecipe · 18/07/2021 00:09

Yep. I was 1000% sure my partner told me one of our neighbours was called Pete. So one day I was saying hi when we came home from somewhere and a delivery guy shows up and gives a parcel to a John (not real name, I know now!!).
I said to the neighbour 'i thought your name was Pete!' and he, his friends inside the house and his wife all started laughing.
My partner was adamant he didn't say his name was Pete. Err yes you did 😂

Mytupenceworth · 18/07/2021 01:10

Tell your neighbour you're suffering baby brain give examples of things you forgot and then say omg would you believe I've even forgotten your name! Baby brain is an actual thing!

Yaya26 · 18/07/2021 01:32

@Shamoo

Ask your postman!
I was going to advise this.
NotJustfriends · 18/07/2021 01:35

Yeah go with "can you remind me how you spell your name?" And hope it's not Eve 😅

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 18/07/2021 01:36

Pay £3 for land registry information. A small sum for preventing embarrassment

NotJustfriends · 18/07/2021 01:36

But equally I wouldn't be offended if someone asked me to remind them my name.

You could keep guessing til you get it right, a la Mrs Doyle in Father Ted? Chewy Louie? Father Spondo Kimodo?

lovethisjourneyforme · 18/07/2021 02:45

Had the same problem. I asked the postman.

sashh · 18/07/2021 02:58

Ask her how she wants your baby to address her.

Something like, "I've just been thinking when baby starts to talk what do you want her to call you? Do you want to be aunty, I know that's a bit old fashioned so what do you prefer?

Hopefully she won't say, "just aunty is fine"

GinPink · 18/07/2021 03:10

Agree with the land registry idea. It's only £2

Coldbrewsandamumbun · 18/07/2021 03:16

I called my neighbour Owen for 10 years. He did not correct me Confused DH finally did.

sillysituation · 18/07/2021 03:37

*OP UPDATE!!!

Apologies if this doesn't come up as the OP, I name changed for this thread 🙈
*

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions - some very amusing I have to say 😂

So... I had planned to ask my postman yesterday but I didn't see him. Growing increasingly impatient (and also keen to update on here as I know many of you are now invested and wanting an update 😂) I went with checking the land registry for £3. Didn't even realise you could do this - I've learned something new.

Anyway .... the big reveal ......

Her name is indeed Sarah !!!!!

I now have to use the words "you were right" with DH. That's going to be painful...

But at least I can now use her name! Thanks all for a helpful, educational and very funny thread 😂😂

Oh and I also discovered that we share a middle name too Smile

sillysituation · 18/07/2021 03:42

Would it be completely inappropriate if I still called her Pam?

😂😂😂

Ask your postman.

Kinko · 18/07/2021 04:20

Sorry see you have the answer!
