To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

It's true. Other countries send in established decent acts and the u.k ....doesn't. This year's entry was utterly forgettable from the song to the staging to the performance. I dont think it's fair or even in the interests of groups to go through automatically. They need to work a lot harder and by being in the rounds before they can gain more support and airplay.

Definately · 24/05/2021 17:42

All the people saying we wouldn't win Eurovision even if we sent Ed sheeran, or James blunt, or Coldplay or Paul McCartney are correct because they're all TOO BORING and not suitable for Eurovision! English people love a bit of dirge but stop foisting it on the rest of Europe, it's an upbeat and dramatic show not a who can produce the most depressing boring shite competition.

ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 24/05/2021 17:46

Have you listened to many Eurovision winners lately Definately?

Arcade? Heroes? Salvador Sobrel? This year’s runners up from Switzerland and France?
Ed Sheeran, James Blunt and Coldplay would fit right in with that moody aesthetic. Notoriously songs in a major key tend to crash and burn.

Bertiebiscuit · 24/05/2021 18:04

I have no idea why anyone cares about it or watches it - waste of time and money - we should ignore the whole pathetic sh*t show

Oscarsdaddy · 24/05/2021 18:04

Let’s look at the facts

Song was poor chosen by so called music experts

Staging was awful compared to other countries

Singer was not right for Eurovision, nice guy but as dull as ditchwater

Performance instantly forgettable

The UK need to stop this ‘well no one likes us so no one will vote for us’ and try something different, something unforgettable, something that will grab viewers attention and make them want to see/hear it again.

The UK have a bye to the final every year due to funding, FFS make the most of it

Toomuchtrouble4me · 24/05/2021 18:12

I didn’t know that Eurovision was still a thing?

NerrSnerr · 24/05/2021 18:25

Isn't a waste of time for those of us who enjoy watching it. Why is it pathetic? Or are you just saying that because you don't like it? Should there only be things that you approve of on telly?

granniesbonnet · 24/05/2021 18:29

Ask Adele to do it.

earnshaw47 · 24/05/2021 18:35

I have thought for a few years now that Eurovision was no good for us, confirmed it now, time to leave

adawong · 24/05/2021 18:35

Ask Adele to do it.
Not a bad shout Ireland won it 7 times with the type of dirges she trots out.

Oscarsdaddy · 24/05/2021 18:35

We’ve tried sending in established acts and who did we choose? Ebgelburt fucking Humperdinck who was last current in 1968 and Bonnie Tyler who was last current in 1985

However sending in some bearded, hairy-arsed overnight fella ain’t gonna do us any good, they should have stick him in a gold dress!

Don't forget your ball on the way out.

What do you mean by 'no good for us'?

It's an entertainment show that fun to watch because it's all a bit extravagant, bonkers and it's a good laugh and it's good to pick your favourites.

It's supposed to be a bit of fun.

TwilightHarmony · 24/05/2021 18:51

How about getting a Welsh or Scottish singer singing part of the song in Welsh/Scottish or really off the wall Cornish!

Shell4429 · 24/05/2021 18:58

I also love the idea of Vic Reeves singing a club song! I think James Newman sang well, I love the song and have it on my current playlist. It is absolutely political. Other European countries already hated us because they see us as arrogant. We refused the single currency, expect everyone to speak English, and now we’ve compounded the view with Brexit. Actually I don’t blame them.

There's no such language as "Scottish" Hmm
SherbrookeFosterer · 24/05/2021 19:04

Has anyone here ever been to a Eurovision Song Contest, or even knows someone who has attended?

RaraRachael · 24/05/2021 19:08

It's my ambition, along with my son and daughter to go to the Eurovision final - I know we're sad! This year would have been ideal as Rotterdam could have been done easily in a weekend.

Which ones are you considering dirge like? Or do you just not know what that word means?
BenProudsNeck · 24/05/2021 19:21

I have had zero interest in it since Ooh Ah Just a Little Bit.
I don't know why the BBC continues to broadcast it and promote it on the radio. It's a load of pish.

Greensmurf1 · 24/05/2021 19:25

@Duckypoohs

He deserved nil points it was cringy and fucking awful, it was embarrassing. Why send a fat nondescript bloke singing a, shite song off key who was dressed as the back seat of a Ford fiesta???
Couldn't have said it better myself.

We were wondering why the UK sent a minicab driver to a massively camp over the top, glam-rock, rave, cheesy party-banger type competition. Maybe it was deliberate to avoid the cost of hosting.

Theworldisfullofgs · 24/05/2021 19:32

I love it and fully intend to go to a final. I'm not apologising for that, it doesn't make me sad, just interested in different things to other people on this thread.

We sent an unmemorable song, that wasn't sung well.

TwilightHarmony · 24/05/2021 19:44

Sorry, Gaelic.

Weareallvirgins · 24/05/2021 19:50

@Spasiba exactly. We fund that? I had no idea..... Why.....

JonSnowIsALoser · 24/05/2021 20:44

I just hope Britain never wins - if we host, all the European participants coming over will be just stopped at the border or sent to Yarl's Wood.
