To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

I thought James' song was good, but I never expected it to get many points. Nil points is quite funny and he took it well. I think we all should lighten up. It's just a bit of fun between frenemies.

@Montalbanosono

Italy won singing in Italian. France came second singing in French. Maybe we should enter a song in Welsh? (Not joking- it might be the edge we need!)
I really think next year the UK should think about some kind of collaboration between the Celtic home nations. We've had English entries for years, maybe time for a change.
SoapboxFox · 23/05/2021 18:44

I’m pretty sure we send shit acts on purpose so we don’t have to pay to host it.

That would make sense Grin

Susie477 · 23/05/2021 18:49

That’s what you get for turning your back on your friends and telling them to fuck off. It tends to cause offence. We reap what we sowed.

StColumbofNavron · 23/05/2021 18:49

But in Britain most of the other entries are considered shite, and wouldn't make it onto the playlists of radio stations, even if you consider them great. Our top artists would laugh if it was suggested they should consider it an honour to be asked to represent us. We don't like our entry because it never reflects the music that sells here, and is always bland rubbish trying to appeal to people with no taste in music.

Erm, what? Taste is totally subjective. A good number of Eurovision songs make dance floors heave over the summer. I’d agree often they aren’t that great live but we’ve listened to loads in the car, on holidays over the years.

Janaih · 23/05/2021 18:51

I think Maneskin will do pretty well outside of Italy on the back of Eurovision so maybe that will give it a bit more credibility, and of course the cocaine hoo haw has given them more coverage.

Janaih · 23/05/2021 18:53

I would say a good handful of last nights entries would get uk radio play. Including the winner which I've been humming all day.

Tessabelle74 · 23/05/2021 18:54

I don't think our tv licence fee should be paying for it. Bad enough we're getting ripped off over paying for sports events and presenters fat salaries

SpindleWhorl · 23/05/2021 18:55

I like the idea of giving the next three years over to Scotland, Wales and Norn to select, sing and stage manage the UK entry.

They could make it their own, to quote the mighty Louis Walsh.

SpindleWhorl · 23/05/2021 18:56

Was it coke coke or just coke in the end that he had his head down for? He said someone dropped a bottle or glass?

Janaih · 23/05/2021 19:02

He said he was clearing up smashed glass on the floor. I guess we'll never know for sure, unless camera footage from a different angle comes to light.
But I don't think it will do them any harm either way.

Whoarethewho · 23/05/2021 19:06

The ebu also set the standards for the dvb standards used for terrestrial TV which things like iPlayer and red button services rely. Unless we want to be dictated to as to what sort of TV we get we need to be in the ebu like Australia.

InFiveMins · 23/05/2021 19:08

Our entry was dire compared to the others.

Send someone with a better voice and a better song and we'd probably make top 10. Like the girl we sent about 10 years ago, didn't we come 5th or 6th that year?!

This. We watched it and said please can we have an act like Katrina and the Waves. The song was awful. Not that most of them were much better. The standard this year was very low.
Janaih · 23/05/2021 19:12

Jade Ewan came 5th yes. With Andrew Lloyd webber on piano. Had they given it a drum n bass remix it probably could have won.

Anna727b · 23/05/2021 19:15

Hm well there have been years when I felt like we deserved some points- this was not one of them!!

I don't mind that we fund it- it's pretty amusing!

The UK should vote to leave Eurovision and seek out exciting new song contests in the Asia Pacific region.

Matt Hancock could get his mate from the pub to write a song.
Wannakisstheteacher · 23/05/2021 19:29

Amanda Holden really didn’t help our cause. Obviously it didn’t change the vote or the fact we entered someone who couldn’t sing in tune - but it made us look like twats. It’s the idea that ignorance is funny, almost something to be proud of. Then you have 10 year Greek children speaking a fluent second language 20 seconds later, now that would have made us and our education system look a lot better.

Janaih · 23/05/2021 19:42

Shall we start a petition for Victoria coren Mitchell to do our votes next year?
I'll take Vanessa feltz at a push.

CasperGutman · 23/05/2021 19:45

Half a million for a while evening of massively popular telly is cheap. Not everything is about winning.

Against Fairytale? I think we could have sent Coldplay ft Adele on vocals and still not have won against that.

I think people need to look past the persistent poor performance of the UK in recent years and have a look at the way the rest of the Big 5 have scored. The Netherlands won comfortably in 2019, and got nul points from the voting public this year (and only one jury gave them any points I think). Have they suddenly been exposed as puppy-murdering bastards? Germany’s placing in the last 6 years has been 27th, 26th, 25th, 4th, 25th, 25th. Did they send out bribes to the jury in 2018? Spain have placed 21/22/26/22/23/24 in recent year. Why does everyone hate them? France had a cluster of relegation placings in the twenties followed by a spate of mid table respectability in the teens and now out of nowhere they’re challenging for the win. Miraculous PR campaign by Macron? Or could it possibly be something to do with the songs?Shock

I thought that getting out of Eurovision WAS the the whole point!

OMG what did I vote for? Shock

Janaih · 23/05/2021 19:56

Ohh was that the same year as fairytale? Now that was a catchy tune.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 23/05/2021 20:19

I thought our song was bad. I listened to it a couple of times yesterday and can’t remember a thing about it.

But last night I listened to Iceland’s entry from last year that was the favourite to win if it had gone ahead and have been humming it all day.
