To think the UK should not fund the Eurovision Song Contest?

Or bother entering obviously.

It’s a humiliation and everyone hates us so we hardly get any votes. None this year due to Brexit and the Covid vaccine probably.

Poor James Sad. He certainly didn’t deserve NIL points!

@TrishM80

The UK should vote to leave Eurovision and seek out exciting new song contests in the Asia Pacific region.
Get a series of tug boats to move the UK to the region?! That would work!
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 23/05/2021 20:41

@Duckypoohs

Which song of ours was brilliant but received nil points or deserved to win but didn't? Because I don't remember any.
The only other one that got null pointe was Gemini. And that was fucking atrocious because she sung out of tune throughout.

It was a crap song, plenty of bits out of tune, he was wearing a ridiculous outfit nothing like the type of ridiculous outfits expected of Eurovision, literally all the other songs in the competition were better and, thanks to Brexit and vaccinations, nobody feels obliged to give out any pity votes anymore.

jcyclops · 23/05/2021 21:28

When we have a shortlist of songs for our entry, we should pay some of our recent immigrants from Europe to judge our hopefuls, and they should see a full live performance, not a studio recording. We might end up with a song good enough to stand a chance.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/05/2021 21:35

I don't think our tv licence fee should be paying for it. Bad enough we're getting ripped off over paying for sports events and presenters fat salaries

Our TV licence fees pay for ALL of the BBC's output. I also have no interest in sport, the soaps, Strictly etc, but the BBC serves the whole country, not just me. I get my Eurovision, Only Connect, Mock The Week etc and somebody else gets their football, Eastenders, Antiques Roadshow: something for everybody.

SoapboxFox · 23/05/2021 21:51

Let's send the money to the NHS instead

Mariposa123 · 23/05/2021 22:05

The semi finals have made the majority of countries up their game, if they want to make it to the grand final. I think the big five (with the exception of Italy normally and France this year. We don’t need to try, so we don’t. Our song would not have made it out of the semi final, but who cares because we get in anyway. We think everyone else has the same attitude, but they don’t. They play to win.

Mariposa123 · 23/05/2021 22:06

The big five think* we don’t need to try

is what I meant to say!

shewalkslikerihanna · 23/05/2021 22:08

I think the right country won
Their performance was great
It had energy, showmanship...it spoke volumes how Europe was sick of all the Covid shite and was ready to party
Ours was dire.
I’m not going to comment on how the guy looked..that’s already been done
But the guy was breathless while singing
You can’t have a singer in that position, in such bad condition that he can’t get through a line in a song
Was dreadful

shewalkslikerihanna · 23/05/2021 22:15

Didn’t we field a pregnant Katie price one year in a pink jumpsuit
Or am i dreaming?

blueangel19 · 23/05/2021 22:23

They can keep the Eurovision contest as far as I am concerned. I am mostly worry about the way politicians from France and Germany are ready to sabotage the U.K. They can do real damage with their childish vindictive actions.

Janaih · 23/05/2021 22:24

Yes "not just anybody". Has to be seen to be believed 😆 Sonia from eastenders was on the judging panel and she made a diplomatic but thinly veiled critique. Katie price gives her a look that would turn milk sour. Brilliant!

They? Who are they? We've been in it since the start. We ARE they!

Also Australia are in it, you know the ones were going to make an awesome trade deal with. Are they 'they' too?!

CatsPyjama · 23/05/2021 22:54

I think we need a proper catchy dance tune with some actual background effects. Make an effort. We make no effort.

Look at Sweden, Euphoria and Heroes were great songs.

EmphaticPeriod · 23/05/2021 23:20

Katie didn't make it through but yes, she was in a pink catsuit and heavily pregnant at the time!
Bottom line is, 12 10 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 - ten songs/26 get the points: we all vote for our favourites and kids' favourites presumably. I voted yesterday for Lithuania, Switzerland (me) Russia, Ukraine, Finland (DD)
Had we had to choose 5 more countries, they'd have been Belgium, Greece, Iceland, San Marino, Sweden. Sixteen would have not made the cut, nothing personal. I didn't mind James (preferred last years) and he certainly would not have been bottom of the remaining sixteen songs to choose from but if other mums vote like me/for their kids, then it's not that surprising he got nil points really. There were more stand-outs last night.

She entered the Making Your Mind Up (or whatever it was called then) public voting competition and was eliminated very quickly. I think, when she was with Peter Andre, she had the idea that, because they were such a close couple, that automatically meant she could sing as well as he could.

They also did that duet to A Whole New World on another occasion, didn't they? I think her part was somewhat autotune-heavy. They should have made a couple's agreement that he wouldn't get his boobs out for the camera and she wouldn't sing in public.

TableFlowerss · 23/05/2021 23:24

To be fair, our songs are always shit!! Funny how some of the most famous, popular and well known artists/bands in the world come from the UK..... yet we send shight songs 99% of the time, although I still don’t think we’d win even if we sent over the Beatles 🙄

nomorehiccups · 23/05/2021 23:26

Perhaps the answer is to introduce Eurovision duty for UK pop stars - a bit like Jury duty so they can't get out of it without a good reason.

EsmaCannonball · 24/05/2021 00:14

Eurovision duty is the best idea yet. 'Nice try, Stormzy, but Kate Bush has already told us she's re-sitting her A Levels and Leo Sayer is suddenly agoraphobic, so you're up.'

Janaih · 24/05/2021 08:13

Grin actual genius 💡 idea!

SpindleWhorl · 24/05/2021 08:43

although I still don’t think we’d win even if we sent over the Beatles

Wouldn't that be because half of them are dead, and one of the others is Paul McCartney?

Yeah, there's no amount of Autotune that been able to compensate for Macca since at least The Frog Chorus.

Ok, who sent this into Lorraine this morning? Grin
SoapboxFox · 24/05/2021 10:04

I think even if none of the countries entered a song, and the voting went ahead anyway, the results would come out the same Grin

Actually I think Leo Sayer singing The Show Must Go On in full Pierrot costume and make up would probably swing it for us.

I'm not sure you are going to win sending Ringo Starr on his own Grin.
